About Me
My name is Maureen Cole and I am a Bilingual Literacy Resource Teacher at Hoover Community School in Redwood City. I have been teaching for 27 years, which include 16 years as a reading teacher and 11 years as a classroom teacher.
I LOVE TEACHING READING!
My ultimate goal is to develop a love for reading in all of my students.
Upon joining the Reading Resource team at Hoover I was trained in Reading Recovery, becoming fully certified in May, 2014. This training has been so invaluable because, after all my years of teaching, I continue to grow and learn as an educator through my daily Reading Recovery sessions with my students and ongoing Professional Development with RR Teacher Leaders.
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and Latin American Studies from California State University, Chico. While at Chico, I participated in the Morelia Program, an in-depth study of Mexican language, culture, geography, sociology and history followed by a cultural experience living with a family and working in Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico. This experience incited my interest in the Spanish language and living abroad, so thereafter, I spent a year at the University of Granada, studying the language, literature, history, art and culture of Spain.
After college, wanting to use my Spanish language skills, I got a job as a Migrant Instructional Aide in Redwood City. From this experience, I fell in love with teaching and went on to receive my teaching credential and BCLAD from San Francisco State University.
In addition, I completed a Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate program at the College of Notre Dame in Belmont, CA. I used this background while teaching English in Sevilla, Spain for 3 years.
As you can see, I love to travel. My other interests include yoga, hiking, beachcombing, reading and flamenco dance. ¡Ole!
