About Me
Hello! My name is Kerry Schmidt and I have been a teacher here at Hoover Community School since 1996. I am thankful to be part of the Reading Resource team of teachers here at Hoover again for a second year as a reading specialist. Last year, I trained and taught Reading Recovery and became fully certified in spring 2019 through Saint Mary's College in Moraga, CA. This year I am fortunate, through the generous support of private donors, to be able to train in and teach Descubriendo La Lectura, Reading Recovery in Spanish! I can't tell you how excited I am to be able to address the needs of struggling readers in both English and Spanish.
On a personal level, I too was a student in a Spanish language enrichment program in kindergarten and started learning to use two languages at an early age. My love of Spanish continued into middle school, high school, and into college where I did my undergraduate degree in Spanish Language and Literature. While in high school, I lived and studied in Sinaloa, Mexico and later I studied my junior year abroad in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico during college where I studied at El Instituto TecnolĂłgico de Monterrey. I love to travel, value different cultures, and enjoy learning new languages. Knowing how to speak, read and write in more than one language is an asset and necessity in today's multicultural and multilingual world!
Hoover School serves a very unique population of students and families who have persevered many cultural and economical obstacles to obtain a better quality of life here in the United States. The students that we serve, value and appreciate having access to an education in their first language, while acquiring English as a second language. The students and their families see Hoover School as their second home and have grown to trust the dedicated and loyal staff that serves their community. Over the years I have taught grades kindergarten through third in the bilingual program, and was one of the lead teachers for the successful SEAL program here at Hoover. During my years as a first grade teacher, I grew to fully understand how vital it is that young children become independent readers and writers by the end of first grade, as it is an essential skill for life long learning. I look forward to working with the parents to help their children achieve their academic goals in reading and in life! You can email me at kschmidt@rcsdk8.net
