April 2022
Council Corner
At our March meeting, the council tackled a variety of issues. First of all, we received an update on the call committee process. The chosen members of Hope Lutheran and Babbitt Evangelical Lutheran Church (BELC) are still awaiting its first meeting with Deacon Brenda Tibbetts from the Northeast Minnesota Synod. Deacon Tibbetts is presently awaiting the arrival of a grandchild and asked that the first meeting of this group not take place until after this blessed event takes place. Both churches gladly acceded to her wishes.
We then filled our open council position. Sharon Kamppi has previously filled a position created due to a resignation. Since no one came forward to fill the position since our annual meeting approximately one month ago, Sharon graciously agreed to fill the position once again. She will serve in this position until the next annual meeting. Thank you, Sharon, for stepping forward.
The council also discussed Confirmation. Due to the ravages of Covid-19, HLC held two separate Confirmation ceremonies–one in the summer and one in the fall–in 2021. Both were wondrous events celebrating the faith journeys of our youth. However, we felt that it would not be practical to hold two Confirmations each year. We will discuss this further with those involved with the program and pick a time on the calendar that works best for all involved. No matter which date is picked, it will surely be a splendid occurrence.
It looks like HLC has a few issues in the basement. The first has to do with the basement tiles. A few of them have come loose. Upon inspection after the meeting, it was discovered that these were located in two specific, smaller areas of the dwelling. Subsequently, we will glue them back into place and move a few of the tables strategically to minimize the foot traffic upon them. This should allow the tiles to hold out for a bit longer and keep people safe at the same time.
Our second problem in the basement has to do with some scurrying rodents. A few have been seen moving about the floor. In addition, some excrement has been discovered in a few of the cabinets and drawers. Subsequently, the council decided to spend some money to determine the extent of the problem. We approved up to $200 (hopefully will be a lot less) for an expert to visit the church and help us with this issue. Once this is done, the kitchen area will need to be cleaned and sanitized before it can be used by the congregation. Please feel free to lend a hand once this call goes out.
Finally, HLC is moving forward with coffee ‘n after church services starting with the first Sunday after Easter. Please feel free to volunteer your time when and if asked. It will be nice to get back together for some good fellowship time after a two-year absence. I would like to thank Janet Lamppa for her organizational efforts in this process. Do not hesitate to contact Janet or the church if you would be interested in serving..
May God grant you peace until we meet again next month…….
In God’s Name,
Lance Kupka
