Wellington City Recollect is administered by Wellington Public Libraries. The collection includes postcards and photographs.

Archives New Zealand keeps records created by the government and dealing with people's interactions with the government. This includes land records, police and criminal records, school records and so on.
The National Library, which includes the Turnbull Library, collects published and unpublished material which tells the story of New Zealand's development, including photographs, newspapers, ephemera (posters, pamphlets etc), diaries and correspondence.
Paperspast is part of the National Library. It is a huge and growing digitised collection of early New Zealand newspapers and magazines and is an amazing easy-to-use source for local history.
An awesome collection of early books about New Zealand digitised by the University of Auckland. Includes trade directories, descriptions of locations etc.

The New Zealand Society of Genealogists has additional resources and advice for its members.
Subscription databases such as Ancestry and Find My Past are also very useful. These sites can be accessed for free at major public libraries.
