As human beings, it is at our core to be social. Whether you like it or not, we are programmed to make connections with other people, and those connections are important for leading a healthy life. However, some people (Including I) have a difficult time making these connections because we lack one basic but necessary skill: Communication. Communicating is not everyone’s strong suite, either we don’t give enough information, or we don’t tell it in enough time and then a catastrophe happens! Some of us don’t communicate at all and it results in us feeling alone. So, communicating is important which is why it’s this month’s theme. - Tyler, Blog Editor/Manager
Sonia's blog post this month is dedicated to the importance of having a strong, open line of communication to your soul family and spiritual team. She believes that every relationship you have (external or internal) is a mirror of the being you are. Prayer is the language of our soul’s desires (coupled in with intuition). Pushing past the notions that communication can only happen during a face-to-face encounter allows us to stay connected to the “Universal Telephone Line”, a 24/7 stream of guidance 🙏🏽
Camaia's blog post this month is discusses one of the biggest debates between African American college students today are PWIs vs. HBCUs. In this blog she will discuss not only the stereotypes that each side may hear about their universities, but also include some ways to have better dialogue about it, instead of going on twitter cussing each other out, and tearing down schools. Camaia talks with fellow students at both HBCUs and PWIs.
Maya will explain the importance of boycotting businesses that do not reflect your beliefs. Companies are known to donate money to causes, buy stocks in businesses, and participate in actions that reflect what they value. Some of these values violate human rights, environmental health, and more. However, the consumer is able to stop these businesses from influencing the world in such an impact by simply not buying their products. The communication between consumers and producers is very essential. Plus, consumers are able to communicate to producers through their purchases. As the old saying goes, “money makes the world go round.” Therefore, money keeps these businesses going. By researching companies and products that we regularly purchase, we can change our habits and buy different products from businesses that we support; therefore, changing the world one dollar at a time.
Adrienne states that growing up as young black men and women, many of us can say that we have had similar childhoods, whether it be by the various phrases we all know, punishments and especially the “rules” or lessons taught through different ages. Many women I know you can relate to being told “speak when you are spoken to” or even better, “a woman is to be seen and not heard”. And fellas, she know yall remember being told “men don't cry '' or “you gotta be a strong boy, stop acting like a girl”. Well, if you have been told any of these things it's okay family, me too! It’s extremely ironic how we are belittled throughout our upbringing and immediately at the age of eighteen we are to know how to talk to employers, significant others, family members and friends, in an open, emotional and appropriate manner. Though as a young black boy or girl we are taught to suppress our emotions and be strong, but oh okay, as adults you still expect us to know how to communicate?
