100th Anniversary Results - Huntting Cup Player Website
We were honoured to represent Harris-Erickson against Sweeny Cup for the Huntting Cup. We could not have had a better day on the course at the prestigious Shaughnessy Golf and Country Club. Kathyrn McGarvey and Jenifer Donnelly hosted and organized the event. Not only was the weather fantastic the conditions were amazing. The food was deliciously presented with choices of salmon, chicken, or mushroom risotto. We said goodbye to outgoing CEO Kris Johnasson and welcomed Mathew Steinbach to the role. Mike Rieste put on a fun putting contest with old fashioned hickory sticks from the BC Golf museum.
We boarded the 7 am ferry and then picked up at Tsawwassen by a Limo whom delivered us to the golf course by 1010 am. We left after a fabulous dinner and retuned on the 7pm ferry! Great camaraderie was had by all.

HUNTTING CUP HISTORY
In 1922 Mrs. Foster Huntting of Jericho Golf and Country Club in Vancouver donated a cup which was to be competed for each year by a team of players from Jericho and Shaughnessy Golf Clubs versus a team from Victoria and Royal Colwood Golf Clubs.
These matches were played in conjunction with the BC Championships, sometimes as in 1937 at Victoria Golf Club, they were played on the Monday and the BC followed on the Tuesday through Saturday. In 1938 they were played on the Sunday preceding the BC and in 1939 at Royal Colwood, it was back to the 1937 format. It seemed to change according to the wishes of the host club.
After 1939 the matches were suspended and resumed in 1947 with a change of format. Jericho was taken over by the Air Force during the War and was never to return, so the format now was a team of 12 players from Vancouver versus a team of 12 from Victoria, each city choosing their 12 lowest handicap players. The matches were played each year, alternating between Vancouver and Victoria and were held on the Sunday preceding the BC Championship, and were played on the same course on which the Championship was held.
This format was followed until 1964 when the BC Championships no longer were to be played just in Vancouver and Victoria and went to Penticton for the first time. This change then required the choosing of new sites and dates for future Huntting Cup matches, but still alternating between Victoria and Vancouver.
In 1969 another change took place, Vancouver now took in the Lower Mainland, and Victoria included Vancouver Island. These were the boundaries of the Huntting Cup until 1974 when BC was divided into districts. Now the boundaries for choosing Huntting Cup players were Victoria and area, now District 1, and Vancouver area, now District 2-5-8. (Up-Island is District 6 and no longer included with Victoria and area)
Through all these years and changes the Huntting Cup was run by the Committees of Vancouver area and Victoria area, but a few years after the Districts were formed it was decided that the business of the Huntting Cup be given to the “Sweeny Cup” group (10 and under handicap players) in Vancouver, and to the “Harris-Erickson” group (15 and under handicap players) in Victoria, as the majority of the players chosen for this event were from these two groups. Now only those belonging to the “Sweeny Cup” and to the “Harris-Erickson” are eligible to be chosen to play.
Until 1972 all matches were played to scratch, but as Victoria players were now averaging higher handicaps than the Vancouver players, it was voted, by the players, to play future matches on handicap to make the competition more interesting and exciting.
After almost 100 years of existence the Huntting Cup matches are still keenly played each year, with players in both cities eagerly vying for a place on the teams. It is quite a record for a relatively small competition.
