Wardrobe/Fashion Wars

Hate it or love it, cosmetics are a pretty big part of Guild Wars 2. I used to think I wouldn’t care much about how my character looked, but I ended up getting into it a little bit despite having absolutely no Fashion Wars game. Here are some basic tips on how to use the wardrobe/dye system. Check out the outfits that people have come up with over at GW2Style.

Wardrobe

You’ll be unlocking skins throughout your adventures in Tyria, either by equipping new items, salvaging them, through completing achievements, or right-clicking items and unlocking them as part of your wardrobe. If an item is not soulbound and you right-click and use the unlock to wardrobe option, it will become account bound. This means you can move the item to the bank and have other characters equip it. Once a skin is unlocked, it is unlocked account-wide. You can use legendary skins on a brand new level 1 character if you would like! I do not recommend using up transmutation charges until you reach level 80 with items that you won't be swapping out (exotics/ascended/legendary items).

To access the wardrobe, open your Hero panel (Default key: H) and click on the Helmet. If you don’t see what’s on the screenshot below, click on the back arrow or click on the again.

Transmutation is the process of changing the skin for a piece of equipment. It costs one transmutation charge for each skin you’d like to apply. PvP and WvW reward tracks grant a fair amount of these. WvW additionally provides Skirmish Chests which offer transmutation charges as an option.

For people who don’t enjoy PvP or WvW, map completion in cities are guaranteed to give you a charge. All other areas will give you a chance to earn one. You may also exchange black lion statuettes (2 charges per statuette) or you may purchase charges for gems.

Dyes

Free to apply so you may switch the color of your equipment whenever you would like. You’re able to unlock new dyes through birthday gifts (use link to see which ones have the highest value/preview what they look like), level-up rewards, unidentified dye drops, and purchasing unidentified dyes or specific dye colors from the trading post. As a side note, chefs are able to craft unidentified dyes of a specific color as well. If you’re out of game, use this to look at dyes.

To dye equipment, open up the Hero panel (Default key: H), click on the helmet icon. If you don’t see what’s on the screenshot on the bottom right, click on the back arrow or click on the again.

You’re able to sort out dyes, search for them, and set favorites. You’re even able to preview dyes that you have not unlocked yet. Each piece of equipment has multiple parts that may be dyed different colors.

Outfits - Overwrites whatever equipment you’re wearing. Has dye channels.

Miniatures - Little followers that don’t do anything during combat but are cool to show off. Has a checkbox so you may toggle whether they appear or not.

Novelties - These range from chairs you can sit on, tonics that transform you into something else, or musical instruments.

Infusions - A type of upgrade material you can slot in items with an infusion slot. Some of them have cosmetic effects.
