Ground targeting - I recommend fast with range indicator if you’re new. It allows you to see the size of your area of effect abilities and gives you the flexibility of holding down the ability key until you’re ready to cast it by letting go. Instant is a little bit quicker but is not as flexible. *Use instant if you use Engineer grenade kit
Double-tap to evade - I recommend disabling this because there are circumstances where you’ll end up dodging when you don’t want to - especially during jumping puzzles.
Disable area of effect rings - If you’re a masochist you may check this box. Otherwise, leave it alone
Right-click to Attack/Interact - I recommend turning this off if you commonly hold down right-click to move the camera around often. You'll end up selecting a new target by accident and that can be frustrating.
Autotargeting - I recommend turning it off since I prefer to select my targets manually. If you’re using action camera, you can still use tab to cycle specific targets or right click on them. *Use autotargeting if you use Engineer grenade kit
Melee attack assist - Definitely turn this off otherwise the game will not allow you to walk through enemies while attacking them in melee range. It puts you at a disadvantage.
Lock ground target at Maximum skill range - I recommend turning this on, especially if you’re new and don’t know your skill ranges very well. It prevents you from trying to cast skills too far and makes it easy to cast things at max range as well.
Allow skill retargeting - If a skill has an effect that can hit multiple times, checking this box allows you to hit multiple targets by retargeting mid-skill cast. I like to have it on
If you have mounts unlocked, I recommend checking this option:
And assigning corresponding buttons you’re comfortable with using for mount ability 1 and 2 instead. It’ll help you control things like roller beetles and skyscales.
On the topic of controls, here are some useful keys to bind:
About face - especially useful for mesmers and if you do any PvP. It’s basically a quick 180 turn
Special action - there will be times (especially during Fractals/Raids) where you need to use this key.
Look behind - Useful for a variety of reasons. If you use action camera, this is a must to easily cast skills behind you
Toggle action camera - If you want to use action camera, put this on a button that’s convenient to hit. To use most UI functions, you’ll need to hit this bind to get your cursor back so you’ll be going back and forth often.
