River Works Park

250 Deerfield St

Volunteers welcome!

About this garden:

River Works park is a public park in Greenfield at the site of the "Green River Works" which according to the Greenfield Parks and Recreation website, was the country's first cutlery factory using  "the American factory system that brought mechanization to production".  In more recent history a gas station left the site contaminated.  The "green solution" to this problem was to turn the area into a public park including art, donated benches, and gardens.

To honor the industrial history of the site, a sculpture, known as "Brookie", was constructed from cutlery collected from residents of Franklin County. The park stands next to the Green River and offers visitors a quiet sitting area with plantings provided and tended by residents of Greenfield.

Volunteer opportunities: Volunteers can join spring and fall clean-up parties as well as mulching and  ongoing weeding of the bittersweet that creeps over the fence from protected riverway lands.
