Native Plant Nurseries

Native Plant Nurseries

While there are many places to buy plants in Franklin and surrounding counties, very few of those shops and nurseries have catered to the ecological gardener.  However, a growing number of nurseries in our area strictly sell native plants that have been carefully propagated from seed to ensure the resilience of genetic diversity and without the use of neonicotinoids or other pesticides.

Below is a list of the strictly native plant nurseries that we are aware of in the area, roughly organized by distance from Greenfield.

Izel Plants

Many growers will only sell in bulk.  Izel functions as a clearinghouse, allowing the individual grower or a small group to purchase plugs at a reasonable price.  Izel contracts to have healthy plants delivered from the grower nearest the delivery address.

Prairie Moon Nursery

A reliable source of seed for native seeds and plants.  The seed source is their fields in Minnesota - not exactly local!  However, the seeds do provide a way to increase the local gene pool, and the climate in Minnesota is not that different from the climate in parts of New England.

Prairie Moon provides detailed instructions for plant propagation and seed starting as well.

While many nurseries do sell some native plants in addition to non-natives and cultivars, most are not knowledgeable about the differences.  Wherever you shop, ask questions!

We encourage everyone to plant with the aim of supporting our endangered native insects. For a more extensive list of sellers of native plants and seeds, with details about each of these, please visit Grow Native Massachusetts.
