A. Definition
The Notional-Functional approach is a method of teaching second languages that focuses on the communicative meanings of words and expressions rather than just grammatical structures. It was introduced by D.A. Wilkins in 1972, as a response to the need for more effective language teaching methods.
The approach organizes language teaching in terms of functions and notions rather than grammatical structures, with a strong emphasis on real-life situations where language is used.
B. Significance
The functional Notional Approach to language learning places more emphasis on the communicative purpose of speech. It focuses on what people want to do or accomplish through language. This approach has a goal to help learners use the real language or appropriate language when communicating.
D. Reflection
Notional-Functional Approach is one of the best methods in teaching grammar because it is where the students can relate more to the topic because it can be related to real life situations. Notional-functional Approach virtues as students put more emphasis on learning languages based primarily on how they serve communicative functions than merely memorizing word lists and grammatical structures' rules . The learner receives more practical knowledge by communicating through various contexts than mere mastery over grammar correctness alone from what we refer here as communicative competence development or using words smartly to communicate in real-life situations. This method creates a learning environment wherein the student can focus on specifics, such as the language needed for work, travel, or socializing. However, detractors criticize this approach for its disregard of critical grammar and syntax elements essential for effective communication. Still, on balance, the advantages outweigh the cons as integrating this technique into one's strategy provides substantial benefits to learning any language while complementing other methods to provide an all-inclusive understanding of it.
