A. Definition
(Macfadyen, 2018) One of the older forms of teaching grammar, diagramming sentences, first appeared in the 19th century. This method involves visually mapping the structures of and relationships between different aspects of a sentence. Especially helpful for visual learners, this method disappeared from modern teaching at least 30 years ago. Different forms of diagramming are used to visualize sentences, from the Reed-Kellogg System to dependency grammar, but all organize the functions of a sentence in a way that illustrates the grammatical relationships between words. More recently, diagramming sentences have had a small pop-culture resurgence in prints of famous opening sentences and websites that allow you to diagram to your heart’s content.
B. Significance
Diagramming is a method of visually representing the structure of sentences. It has been used for centuries to teach grammar and language proficiency. The significance of diagramming lies in its ability to help students understand the relationships between words and phrases in a sentence. By breaking down complex sentences into their component parts, students can better understand how grammar works and how to construct effective sentences. Diagramming also helps students develop critical thinking skills by requiring them to analyze sentence structure and identify errors. Overall, diagramming remains an important tool for teaching grammar and improving language proficiency.
D. Reflection
By applying the diagramming sentence method in teaching grammar help student in visualizing the sentences, by providing clear structure of the sentence and instruction that lead student to be more knowledgeable in teaching and learning Grammar. Teachers can also integrate this kind of method in the future purposes that help student to understand more the diagram in the sentence in any aspect of grammar. The student will also become a visual learner that they can understand the importance of grammatical relationship between words. Therefore, it's not only that the student can benefit in this method but also to the future teacher who will teach in teaching grammar, and also us a student who will become a teacher someday.
