Standard 7 - Assessment – The competent teacher understands and uses appropriate formative and summative assessments for determining student needs, monitoring student progress, measuring student growth, and evaluating student outcomes. The teacher makes decisions driven by data about curricular and instructional effectiveness and adjusts practices to meet the needs of each student.
This assignment was created early in my education program to teach me how to write a comprehension assessment.
7B) understands that assessment is a means of evaluating how students learn and what they know and are able to do in order to meet the Illinois Learning Standards.
This assessment is summative and is used to reflect on the lessons from the unit prior. As teacher assessments are the main way to focus on how a student is doing. When you give in assessment it is a way to see if you have taught a lesson successfully or if you need to make adjustments to your lessons. This may reveal that students might need a mini lesson on the same subject matter to be successful in the future. This is a good example of standard 7 because the information gathered will be used to see if students understand the unit.
While I have had lots of practice writing assessments this was my earliest experience writing one. What I learned from my teacher was to not to take the results as poor teaching but as a way to find better ways to reach all the students.
Rationale
This assignment demonstrates the use of assessment clearly because we created a test that would allow us to interpret information from the results to further understand our students.
Once our test was administered, we took the data and translated the information in z scores which allowed us to get a better picture for the entire class. With that information we were able to easily make a decision for the betterment of the class. The interpretation of results to determine student performance and to enhance the learning objectives directly relates to standard seven (7J).
Being able to use Google forms i was successful in creating and maintaining useful and accurate records of performance. All information that was gathered through Google forms was then transferred over to Microsoft Word in charts that were clear and easy to follow, this helps meet 7M. When getting individual results from students immediately after taking the test i was able evaluate their performance. After everyone had turned in their results, I was able to gauge who they performed as a class and compared each individual result to the mean of the class (7K).
The assessment that was created was done using the Google Forms platform. Along with creating the test, students were allowed to take the test online. In order to gauge performance, I used charts on Microsoft Word to organize my information and translated it into a narrative format. The use of technology was important for me in order to conduct the assessment, to help track performance, and to understand my students progress (7O).
After receiving the results of the assessment back it's the most important part, review and reflect. The test analysis is an example of how deep of a reflection that is necessary to understand the lesson to take from this assignment is to understand and find time to have a good reflection on the assessments.
