Standard 2 - Content Area and Pedagogical Knowledge – The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
This artifact is one that was produced for my Arts in the Literacies. The purpose of the assignment was to focus on cultures around the world and how they celebrate Christmas. In the video, a classmate and I were demonstrating how to create an advent wreathe. This practice can be found in Europe more specifically Germany. The wreathe has a direct connection to religion, and represents the different themes of the weeks of Advent.
2J) uses differing viewpoints, theories, and methods of inquiry in teaching subject matter concepts.
My classmate and I believe that this demonstration was an appropriate assignment because of the cross-culture significance. I feel that I struggle with being more open about other religions, but this assignment is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to learning about other practices. This relates to the Illinois teaching standards because of subject matter that was practiced. The subject was used to demonstrate the different viewpoints of cultures. While creating the Advent Wreathes with your class, it opens up the opportunity for the staff to ask the students about their culture's practices.
Like stated before this assignment for me was a learning curve and just the tip of the iceberg. I feel that before student teaching and working as a paraprofessional I avoided the topic of other cultures. I was afraid that I would be accidently insensitive to practices because I don't fully understand the context. This lesson taught me that I can be open to learning about cultures in a safe way. I learned that I could open conversation in my class about these topics, but I should be ready to listen and learn rather than teach.
This assignment was my first experience into working with the edTPA. Learning and getting familiar with this was our steps in preparation for the final assignment. This assignment focused on the Instruction Commentary. We were tasked with completing Task 2. The instruction commentary focused on the lesson of the Advent Wreathe. I remember focusing on giving as much detail as possible when answering the questions. This part of the edTPA focuses on the lesson and how the lesson is a demonstration of how students connect with the connect, the environment, and self-reflection.
2I) evaluates teaching resources and materials for appropriateness as related to curricular content and each student’s needs.
The instruction commentary partly focuses on self-reflection of materials presented. With a subject like culture, it's important to be open to ideas and learn from the experience. The instruction commentary is related to teaching standard 2 because of the use for evaluating instruction. After teaching the lesson and writing up the commentary you learn what works and what still needs adjustment. Throughout the process you focus on how the lesson and materials that were needed and if they were appropriate for the students.
While writing the commentary on this lesson you reflect a lot on how the lesson was presented. I learned that its important to read the task prior to preforming the activity. You may have a good lesson planned out but reading what is being asked of you first allows you to focus on the main parts of the lesson. The most important lesson learned in this assignment was to be always willing to learn. The culture aspect of the classroom can prove to be challenging but its necessary to create a safe and healthy environment.
