FAIRY TALES
Tales of love, community and customized comfort.
Weekend fairies
Just so you know.
March 25th 2023.
We got a call early this morning from our friend Nick, Executive Director of Marin's Interfaith Street Chaplaincy ( who was on an out of state trip) and Police liaison for mental health outreach.
Together we arranged for an extremely vulnerable gentleman to stay in a hotel over the weekend, funded by the county. The alternative was he faced living on the street for two days between being released from hospital this morning and taking up a spot in a residential program on Monday. He's doing really well, but that's something he just wasn’t well equipped to handle right now.
A local hotel ( I won’t name it for privacy reasons) accepted our reservation, gave us a discount, invited the gentleman to join them immediately rather than waiting for check in time- and then - noting he was having difficulty with stairs - let us know they had moved him to a more expensive downstairs room at no extra cost.
Thanks to our donation money we were able to whoosh a little community love his way and deliver a comfort package with snacks, fruit and toiletries. And we let him know that the pizza fairy ( thank you to Mountain Mikes!) would be arriving for his evening meal.
It’s an honor to glimpse inside these county organizations and businesses and see individuals going the extra mile to look out for our most vulnerable neighbors at their toughest moments.
And it is so beautiful to see how the Good Fairy Community can be genuinely useful supporting them.
The explosion of life, love and laughter that was Martha O’Brien
I am expressly forbidden to snivel or call this sad news.
It’s terribly hard to believe that the explosion of life, love and laughter that was Martha 0’Brien has passed away. She left us on Friday 24th Feb.
A lady I affectionately referred to as The ‘Gristle’ of Gerstle Park.
Martha was one of the very first seniors we supported at Good Fairy Marin And I'll be honest..one of the most challenging,. We had lovefest moments and we had firey exchanges in the early days lol, but because of that -because of her honest feedback - she rapidly became one of the most inspiring and instructive and rewarding people to support. And she made me a better fairy to others because she taught me to listen to how individuals wanted to be helped.
I’d like to share this photo I took of her on Sunday last week, just five days before she passed away. It’s the moment I saw her at her very very best. Doing one of the bravest things I’ve ever seen anyone do. And doing it with aplomb.
Knowing she was approaching the end of her life, Martha requested a final fairy wish. She wanted us to help her find a new forever home for her 12 yr old ball of white fluff, Scruffy. She didn’t want this to happen after she died, she wanted to be absolutely sure he would be treasured, cuddled and thoroughly cared for…even if it meant facing her own last few days or months without him in her arms day and night. She even pulled savings together to provide him with a ‘dowry’ to help on vet bills.
I took this last photo of her with him ( possibly the last photo of her ever) about half an hour before she surrendered him. She was entertaining the new owner in her home with friends and neighbors. Here she is keeping the jokes and stories coming, putting everyone at their ease, focused on gratitude, a great solution, and Scruffy’s wellbeing.
I excused myself, headed to Walgreens to get this photo printed for her, I thought perhaps I’d pop back with it and a hug after everyone had gone.
There was a delay with my prints, and in wandering around the store I noticed a stuffed toy that bore a resemblance to Scruffy. I hesitated .. as you do .. not sure if Martha would love it or hate it. And for sure she’d let me know either way lol.!! I told the store assistant the story and my idea the stuffie might be something for Martha to hug. The assistant burst into tears and insisted the stuffy was a gift from her.
When I returned to Martha, she was alone. V sad but not crying. She was really delighted with the picture, I’d had it printed big enough for her to really see it and though violently predisposed to dislike images of herself .. she liked it. It does very much encapsulate their relationship.
Then I pulled out the stuffy .. and gently said I wondered if it would be good to have something to cuddle.. and I explained ( I swore actually .. she literally made me swear) that I had not paid for it .. it was a gift from the lady at Walgreens.
And then she started to cry. “ Scruffy the second” she said. Now I don’t have to sleep alone”. And she batted at me with it ..saying something along the lines of ‘ is there no end to the fairies ‘.
That little extra whoosh of community love was perfect.
I am sniveling, sorry Martha.
But I know you’d like me to blow my nose ( properly lol) and what you’d like me to say here is thank you to all the fairies that made such a difference to the last few years of your life. I count at least 15 people who played a role. Thank you endlessly for the practical help, friendly visits and phone calls, painted stones, bunches of daffodils, home made and store bought meals, for walking Scruffy, watering plants, grabbing plants and donating them before your landlady seized them, cleaning and decluttering, fixing the TV, attempting to train you on how to use technology, allowing you to give up on that, helping you donate said technology to a deserving person so you never had to see it again .. etc
And I know what we’d all like to say back to you is ..gosh what a privilege to meet and support such an exceptional person. You deserved that support. And thank you for appreciating it.
We know you were a fairy yourself to many others when you were younger. Martha worked exhaustively to provide for the homeless community in particular.
I should imagine you’re feeling right at home now with a new set of wings.
I attach a link to a fairytale about Guatemalan artifacts which some of you may remember inwhich Martha played a staring role
The Car Wash Fairy
Hi - this is Good Fairy founder Penny Macphail. I think fairies will enjoy this story .. it got over 500 likes when I posted it on Nextdoor
March 16th 2023.
Shout out to Matt and Jeff’s car wash, 2nd St in San Rafael.
As the lady passed me my keys she let me know she had found a $100 bill under a floor mat and placed in in a side pocket to be safe.
I was astounded .. no idea how it got there.. and gave her a $10 tip.. with which she seem both surprised and delighted.
I drove around the corner, bought a beautiful vase of flowers, returned to the car wash, asked for the manager, told him how much I appreciated her and asked him to present them to her. I LOVE that he was so excited for her.
When she opens the thank you card, she’ll find that $100 bill for the second time today.
What lovely people.
The Gas Station Fairies
18th November, 2022
This is Penny, founder of Good Fairy. This is the story of something that happened to me recently. I put it on social media and was astounded at the quantity and quality of the response, in 4 days 1,125 people had liked it ..and only one person had said something negative about the Dad in the story- ' a village' moment for sure.
................................................................................................................................................................................
Today my son Felix and I were cutting it fine driving to a long awaited medical appointment in San Francisco.
We debated stopping for gas. I wanted him to drive me to the appointment then get gas before returning. He was uneasy and insisted on stopping.
An hour and a half later we were still at that gas station. The one at the Red Hill shopping center in San Anselmo.
As we drove in I did notice a cute kid scooting around on a pedal-less bike. I vaguely cast an eye around for an adult with him.
As I completed pumping gas a small voice behind me said: " Where did my Dad go?"
It was this tiny person, all alone. His Dad had driven off, he said.
I thought it was probably a kid joke but might not be and played along gently.
"Aren't you the kid I saw scooting on a cool bike when we arrived?"
Yes he was.
Where is your bike now?
Dad put it in the car and drove off.
And there IS no bike. I never saw a Dad or a car - and no-one else at the gas station had seen the child with a man etc. But both Felix and I definitely saw a bike. And that had vanished.
So we called the police. And we started to help him recall key facts about himself. He knew his first name and his middle name but not his last name. He knew how the beginning of the last name sounded but not the end of it and he couldn't spell any of it. He knew he lived in California but not which town. None of the town names we listed sounded familiar to him. He didn't know any phone numbers. He knew what his parents did for a living but no company names. He had been to kindergarten today and remembered some bits of the school name. Yes he had been driving for a very long time since Dad got him from school. ( or had he ...how do kids assess time?)
He knew he was 5 yrs old.
At that age all of my kids carried a ' hello this is me' card in a plastic bag with them, in a pocket or sock. And I taught them all to learn my cell phone number by heart ( by making up a very rude rhyme which ended ' Mummy's bottom smells'). If you have a kid this age, esp if it is your first kid you might consider it. It's amazing what they don't know about themselves.
The police and gas station staff were stellar. Looking carefully at the situation from all angles, not making assumptions, everyone working together to keep the child calm, entertained etc while steadily pumping him for information.
Mummy normally picks him up from school but today it was Dad.
Such a great kid. And a beautiful, clearly well cared for child. Someone had taken some trouble to comb his hair nicely this morning.
He didn't want anything from the gas station. No chocolate bar. He accepted a bottle of water and put it on the ground firmly. He would save that till he was driving home with Dad.
Eventually dots were connected. The Dad is now calling in to the police. He had driven a VERY long way before realizing the kid wasn't in the car. They both got out of the car at the gas station and - as it is a long ride home- the kid scooted his bike while Dad had a go on his new skateboard. He took it up a couple of days ago to have fun with his kid.
Then Dad puts the board and bike back in the car. He hears his kid open and close the door and he drives off. Now and then he talks to the kid. But the kid is often quiet or falls asleep in the car and he just manages to drive a very long way before the horror of discovering his car is empty.
And we'll all park the judgement here. No parent is perfect. Not every day.
I'm so glad we listened to that kid and prioritized the fact that he might be telling the truth over everything else.
I'm so glad it was us that found him, me he turned to to ask for help.
And when Dad arrived, he seemed to suddenly be there as if he had fallen from the sky, he was on his knees and his arms were full of kid. And when he could bear it, he pulled himself up and asked if my son and I were the people who had helped. And then I got a bear hug. And I knew to expect it. The child was VERY clear that Dad was a big strong man.
And I had two more gifts to give this family.
First of all the gift of telling Dad about the time I drove my then 5 yr old to the middle school to pick up his brother and a friend after school. We got out of the car, found them, hopped in, drove to the the friend's house to drop him off ....and I had my first awful glimpse of an empty booster seat in the back of my car.
It took me 10 mins to get back to the school and run around screaming until we found him running around happy as can be carrying a soccer ball on the school field with a kind teacher and a whole class of students keeping an eye on him and wondering where his Mom was. I didn't stop shaking for days. I've still not forgiven myself or understood how it was possible. This Dad's nightmare lasted a great deal longer.
And the second gift?
Well we thought the kid might like a super fun light up, quacking rubber ducky keychain from the gas station. Just like the one I have on my keys. A memento of a day when he and his Dad needed a village, and he was smart and brave and we were there.
Ps. In my view, the most important part of ‘it takes a village’ is to realize you yourself have been the village idiot many times.
Pps. I have to add a funny detail. We asked the kid what his Dad’s car was like.
A really big white truck with some letters on it.
We asked people around if they’d seen one and the police were off to look for it on the security camera. Until we thought to ask. And is that what he’s driving today ?
“Oh no he’s driving Mummy’s car today. It’s a silver xxxxx.”
Mr Whipple
Feb 25th 2023
This evening I ( Penny - founder of Good Fairy Marin) drew up at the San Anselmo Safeway and wondered if I could make it into the store to buy chicken, potatoes and Chardonnay for dinner. Standing and walking is difficult for me, and I had just made a Herculean effort to get myself down to and up from San Quentin Beach to swim with Pumpkin.
A voice at my door politely asked if I would buy him some chicken and potatoes. And I met Mr Whipple.
I realised he was homeless, explained Good Fairy. I passed him one of my papers that lists all the resources in Marin that help folks in his position, and I connected him via e-mail with an agency who will get him a thermal sleeping bag and warm clothes etc gifted to them by GF come Monday.
For now, I said .. yup let’s get you some food.
Odd he’d asked for exactly the same food I was after.
The chap serving was an absolute sweetie, understood the situation .. chose all the best pieces of chicken for him .. added a few and, more importantly, just joined in conversation with us. Even though one ..at least one ..of us had stains on their shirt and needed a bath.
When asked for sauces … he filled his hands deeply and poured them into the bag.
I purchased this meal, but as I passed it to Mr Whipple he felt he needed to tell me that some people had given him money today and he intended to buy Vodka with it. He felt it would be lying to me not to tell me .. and he frankly gave me the option to withdraw the chicken.
I didn’t need to tell him I couldn’t buy the Vodka for him. I’m so glad he was speaking to someone who truly appreciated that wasn’t what he was asking. He was giving me the gift of honesty and respect.
I thanked him and told him my shopping list which was also chicken, potatoes and alcohol .. in a different form.
And I said while I can’t use GF donation money for alcohol I absolutely feel anyone who judges him should spend just one night sleeping in his car with just one blanket and windows that don’t close.
He disagreed . He felt it might take a week to break the strongest of them lmao
And I offered him a hug. It was a great big bear hug and he lifted me off the ground.
I waved as he checked out with his Vodka. I thought we had parted company. I was a while in the shop. But as I left the store he was waiting for me.
‘ May I walk you to your car?’
He did, he saw me safely in and he gave a little bow as I drove off.

The Pizza Fairy strikes again!
Feb 8th 2023
Last night’s Street Chaplaincy surprise pizza party for c. 60 folks currently homeless. Made possible with less than 24 hr notice thanks to donations from 9 Good Fairies and a big discount from Mountain Mikes. When the regular chef fell ill with COVID 19, we worked together to ensure those gathering still had a hot meal instead of ‘emergency’ cold sandwiches ‘.This was no ordinary week - those gathering had all just endured a week of mentally and physically overwhelming weather with bitter cold and devastating rain.
And we all felt pizza would raise a few smiles.
It certainly did. Eye rubbing, smiles, laughs, hugs ..and even some dancing!
Thank you everyone.
The Library Fairy
July 28th , 2022.
One of our finest young fairies, Grace, partnered with San Anselmo Library to offer a library delivery service for housebound residents of her home town. She did this when she discovered a service like this existed before Covid but is no longer offered.
She can help participants sign up for a library card, select and check out materials, will deliver them in person and of course return them. And she's up for cup of coffee and a chat about what you’ve been reading while doing so. ( She’s also a fabulous cook so she might even bring cookies!)
Go Grace! What an inspiring young lady. Good Fairy reached out to The Marin Center for Independent Living, Age Friendly San Anselmo, Bellow Gardens Assisted Living facility and Vivalon to let them know the offer was there for eligible clients - who need to be housebound and resident in San Anselmo.

The Curious Tale of The Guatemalan Artefacts
July , 2022.
Our Latest Real Life Fairytale - The Strange Tale of the Guatemalan Artefacts.Martha from San Rafael ( who has banned me from referring to her as senior) contacted us with an extraordinary story.
Over 30 yrs ago, a Italian neighbor ran into her house, clearly distraught, carrying two boxes, and shouting: " Take them take them , get rid of them, they've killed my husband'.
Martha was shocked to hear the husband, a hardworking restaurant owner and talented chef with no known medical issues, had literally just dropped dead. Completely unexpected.
In her shock and grief, the wife had immediately gone into their garage and pulled out these boxes. She and her husband had had a bad feeling about them.
Their son ( who I am given to understand had a reputation of being ' up to no good' at times ) had placed them there without explanation on a visit just after returning from a trip to Guatemala. They contained artefacts, carved figures, necklaces, arrow heads, simple but symbolic looking stones - some highly polished, some rough. Many items were covered still in dusty red soil. Frankly they were worried they may they been stolen, purchased illegally....robbed from graves even?
Shortly after the neighbor closed the restaurant and returned to Italy. Martha had no way to contact her or the son.
Martha opened the box gingerly ...indeed they did appear to be artefacts, certainly not store bought. She was struck with a sense that these were important things, possibly very old, possibly worth money, almost certainly of religious or cultural significance. But she didn't know what to do with them. She didn't want to throw them away as requested, she didn't want to sell them or give them to Goodwill where they would be sold, she didn't want to display and enjoy them as ornaments in her own home. She wanted to pass them on to the right hands.
She tucked the boxes into a cupboard. There they stayed for three decades.
In the meantime she did visit Mexico a few times and asked around but never made the right connection. At one point she was warned she might be arrested if she tried to cross the border with them. She didn't know for sure they were real or old or even Guatemalan ..she could be laughed at if they weren't and ...mmm well and it was going to be hard to explain what they were doing in her possession if they were.
When Martha fell ill and was putting her estate in order, she contacted Good Fairy Marin and asked me ( Penny) if we might help. She wanted them to be in safe, respectful, appreciative appropriate hands before she passed away. Funnily enough I used to be an archaeologist, so it was a mission close to my heart.
Good Fairy Eve carefully unwrapped, photographed and re-wrapped each item. After contacting various embassies and museums we eventually found the perfect solution. The Multicultural Center of Marin was due to open an indigenous healing center. Pictured is the one and only Pascual Yaxon, Director of the indigenous healing center, who happens to be Guatemalan, unpacking them..
I called Martha on the ride home and she was beyond overjoyed. And I told her I asked him at the end which pieces he was especially drawn to, thinking his answer might surprise her. Nope. Little surprises our Martha ..:"Was one of them the black shiny stone, it has curves in it almost like part of a lion's paw and looks like it has been rubbed a thousands of times?'.
Oh my - it had been. Pascual was emotional unwrapping many of the items. We marveled together at the carving and craft work and the variety of colors and textures among the stones they were made from. But he was was deeply moved by a few pieces in particular that stone. Said he was sure it was Mayan and in his words ' so full of energy'.
And then Martha let me know she hadn't quite told me the full story. Everything HAD stayed in the boxes..... apart from that one black stone. She just had to hold it the first time she saw it, picked it up and basically took it with her absolutely everywhere she went and held it every day. And it had been a tough decision for her to put it back in the box just before we picked them up.
The healing center is due to hold a little ceremony to welcome these items - Martha will be attending.
Thank you for your help in reaching this happy ending Eve, Luna and Marco!https://multiculturalmarin.org/

Arlene's Eyes
June 22nd, 2022.
'I never thought I'd be seriously ill or in debt or without any of my precious life-long friends in my life ... and gosh ( laughs softly) ...everything kinda collapsed at the same time.'
In 2005 Legal Analyst Arlene was already battling loss of earnings with chronic fatigue syndrome when she became the victim of a freak accident. A gardener exposed her face to the now notorious pesticide, Roundup. She developed Graves Eyes Disease, a debilitating condition which left her with eye muscles damage, chronic inflammation and at times double vision. And of course this limited her ability to work even more AND left her under financial stress. The only relief she could find was to take over-the-counter dry eye medication every three hours - not covered by insurance.
More recently, now aged 75, she experienced severe eye strain and headaches after taking her first Johnson and Johnson COVID 19 vaccine. A month later, she was startled to be diagnosed with exfoliation glaucoma in both eyes at the UCSF Ophthalmology Center in Berkley. No one can be sure, perhaps a coincidence or perhaps a side effect of the drug, but with no family history of this condition, she was advised against taking any further boosters.
As a result she has again been impacted physically, emotionally and financially. As a senior with no family who lives alone its hard to keep up beat and not feel isolated as she avoids exposure to COVID 19 . Sadly, she also lost her two best friends in 2020 .
Financially, it is particularly tough as due to her Graves Eye Disease medications and supplements needed to try to lower her eye pressure need to be preservative free and are not covered by insurance. Options for surgery are also complicated. Her best bet would be an ultrasound procedure but this is not currently available in America.
She's still loving life and laughing and super keen to get back to some form of work to support herself - perhaps even cover a trip to France for that ultrasound procedure.
In the meantime, with no family, she is politely asking for our help to tackle credit card debt ( not something she has faced before) enable her to keep taking the meds that are necessary, keep making rent and get herself into a position where she has a foundation of safety and stability from which to more forward and support herself.
'I never thought I'd be seriously ill or in debt or without any of my precious life-long friends in my life ... and gosh ( laughs softly) ...everything kinda collapsed at the same time.'
We set up a Gofundme and publicized it with the fairies and on Facebook groups concerned with COVID 19 and things- ophthalmic in Marin.

Paul's Pressie
April 21st, 2022.
Senior, Paul from Terra Linda posted this on our Nextdoor feed.
'In market for recliner looks not as important as working & spring support in seat.I got one but seat spring are weaker one one side it' giving my lower back trouble. I have truck can pick up. Willing to pay modest price'
We started trying to help him by looking up recliners for sale in his area on Nextdoor and Craigslist and in traditional shameless style explained our role in supporting a low income senior and asked if anyone might discount or even gift their chair to us.
There was one brand new, electric recliner. It was modestly priced for what it was but sky high for Paul's budget. We still approached them thinking perhaps we could fundraise for it.
And the owner called us. She would like to gift the chair. It was brand new as it had been purchased for her husband to help him recover from a minor surgery. Tragically, very unexpectedly he had passed way during the procedure. She had really just wanted to get it out of her home as the sight of it just hurt too much. But now - she had a tiny, meaningful silver lining to have a lovely, deserving person who would really enjoy it.
It was an ' I believe in fairies' moment for us. There were tears all round.
Thank you to all involved including our pick up volunteer.

The Fairfax Festival
13 June, 2020
Good Fairy Julz called Fairyland one day to say she had some vintage clothing that could be sold and howsabout we take a stand at the Fairfax Festival Fleamarket to raise money for Good Fairy Marin. We called for volunteers to help price and label things, we asked if others might have vintage clothing or jewelry to donate too, and we bought in a LOT of fairy wings and packed up a box of ladybug stones as we thought they seemed like Fairfaxy things.
What a hoot! Hard work but we made a whopping $1500 for fairy deeds, created huge awareness for Good Fairy, and made a LOT of people very happy indeed with their purchases.
It is of particular pleasure to me that this contained all the ingredients of a Good Fairy deed. People of all sorts of ages, physical wellbeing, culture, affluence and locations in Marin working together. Seniors and people battling grave illness made an especially massive contribution gifting items - we always say we don't like just being nice to old ladies and do their shopping. We tell them to dust off their sewing machine or craft table, make a companionship call, give us expert advice etc. Everyone in Good Fairy is a fairy. We all help each other and we all benefit.
Thank you to ....
Donors, esp Julz, Kimi, Lisa, Dorcas, Lynn, Kathy, Kathleen, Janet and stores Stella and Bloom.
Organizers and Festival fairies, Julz, Lisa, Kimi, Carrie, Jeff, Deborah, Parris and hubby, Mariah, Heather, Monica, Tiger, Gia, Wilder, Felix.
Our love and congrats to Festival organizer Claudia and Mayor of Fairfax ,our v own Good Fairy Steph Hellman who beat the dreaded lurgy just in time to be there.
#fairfaxfestival
And our undying adoration to stand mascots Nellie and Pumpkin.
By the unanimous decision of the key organizers, a portion of the money raised was presented to one of our volunteers as a surprise. Enough to fund a fun treat for herself and hubby as life has been showering them with lemons lately and they deserve some lemonade ...or something a tad stronger.
The Mahjong Master's little surprise
Good Fairy Kevin from San Anselmo Parks and Rec drew our attention to a very special senior in her 80s. She'd love c 4 -6 hrs of help in her garden. She knew what needed to be done but her spirit was willing but the flesh, knees and biceps weak.
This lady has no local family support, her beloved husband passed from cancer three years ago and she herself is weakened by being a cancer survivor. It hasn't held her back from being an outstanding community helper - they told us. For the last decade she has offered Mahjong classes ( a Chinese tile game) at San Anselmo rec. You can drop in to learn/play any Thursday for a nominal $2 fee...and expect a warm welcome, patient tuition and to see her bedecked in fun outfits reflecting special days and seasons.
So we got a fairy to do a few hours of gardening.
We also asked Paradise on Picnic to gift her some plants so the garden makeover exceeded her expectations.
And when we delivered the plants, we brought along THE most beautiful Mahjong theme painted stone ( thank you Gina's kids group!!) to thank her for her contribution to the community.
SHE LOVED IT ALL
Funny thing was - her garden was full of fairy ornaments - some are pictured.

The Lion's Share
June 13th, 2022.
Yes The Lions of Las Gallinas definitely know how to share. They have shared time, resources, advice and goodies with Good Fairy Marin repeatedly. So we were delighted to find a way to help them in return.
We asked if any fairies might be going to The Marin County Fair?
Each year The Lions run a parking lot here, it's their biggest annual fundraiser. We asked fairies to take a shift greeting and directing for a few hours before or after their visit. We were able to tell them they could park free all day, would be entered into a draw to win two tickets to the fair and would be quite safe as these people are feisty but not real lions.
If you are reading this before the fairy - check the sign up and email penny@goodfairy.org if you snag a spot.
Off to the Great Lemon Meringue Pie store in the sky
March 15th and May 28th, 2022.
In May there was a strong Good Fairy presence at the funerary mass for Pamela Martin at St Hilary's Catholic Church in Tiburon. I ( Penny) had the honor of reading a passage, Maggie was there too and many many more fairies were there spirit, esp Jeff, Barry, Bev, Cathleen and Bob, Monica, Liz and Pumpkin Macphail who made furry visits to her in various nursing homes.
A tiny fairy with an ' I believe in fairies' sign was placed by her fantastic 'Shirley Temple' childhood portrait. This was made for us by The Cedars and hung up where she could see in by her bed in Marin Health. And it still makes me cry to know her daughter opted for her ladybug stone and beloved Good Fairy scarlet fleece to stay with her forever alongside the pinecone she brought from Wisconsin.
Her daughters' words about the fairies ..
' Thank you again and I am so grateful to know you to know my Mom was loved and cared about and held with such integrity and humor at the end of her life. Thank you and thank you for all you do.'
And here is the little send off we posted on our social media in March.
A tender farewell this morning to Good Fairy Pamela, born as Jean, toyed with Patsy and Pam at times and was labelled ‘ The Queen of Sheba’ when luxuriating in her scarlet fleeced blanket from Good Fairy.
In supporting this lady we developed Operation Fluffy Socks, partnering fairies to folks in nursing homes without the support of local friends and family. And we introduced fairy jaunts, making the best of tough trips such as leaving hospital to reside in a nursing home by having folks ride hwith a fairy instead of by ambulance, take the scenic route and stop off for a manicure and ice cream etc on the way.
A tough cookie, fiercely independent, formerly the manager of the Wells Fargo Bank in Tiburon, she was I believe greatly changed by the awful experience of physical decline coupled with finding herself in the position of needing help from Good Fairy and humbled by the kindness to be found in fairies and those special members of nursing staff who light up a room and go the extra mile. When I first met her she was positively averse to mingling with nurses and patients of different cultures. In her last months she developed close relationship with patients and staff from a vast array of cultures, in the last week she was flirting with an orderly called Benito and they were planning to run away together as long as he promised to serve her lemon meringue pie every day. And he was telling me she always remembered his name, loved a touch of the hand and thanked him repeatedly.
She loved her ladybug stone and held it for hours initially simply feeling gratitude to the fairies but then, upon my instruction, looking for inspiration to find opportunities to be a fairy herself and pay it forward. Smile at the staff, get to know them, be kind to other patients .. brighten someone’s day and above all hit the world with her fantastic dry sense of humor. My favorite quip of hers was her response when I asked what the food was like in a particular facility and she replied ‘ put it like this, if you don’t eat it for lunch it comes back as soup for dinner’.
My thanks to all the fairies who played a role in supporting Pamela in the last years especially Jeff, Monica, Bev, Maggie, Cathleen, Janice, liz, Jamie, Peachie, Renee and Deborah.
And our love and condolences to her family, esp her daughter Liz who flew in to spend crucial time with her mother in the last few days. Tough days but full of love, empathy and even laughter.
Lockers Love
June 5th, 2022.
Our lovely Good Fairy Joan had to close her 25yr business recently. It was a gym for women, beloved by so many but …a casualty of COVID.
In the heartbreak and turmoil of selling equipment etc, she found time to make a connection with The Hanna Boys Home in Sonoma and agreed to gift them her lockers. But neither she nor the home could afford to transport them.
Hanna is a group home for boys who have aged out of the foster care system. Their aim is to lead the cause to heal wounds and improve lives. With support these young people are so very at risk of passing from a rocky childhood to an adulthood of prison, addiction, homelessness etc rather than fulfilling their potential. And having a secure, private locker for their things is exactly the kind of support they need.
As time was tight, we went ahead and scheduled a pick up from our friends at Lugg.com for the next day, started Gofundme Locker Love for $350 to cover the move and the cost of placing comfort packages in each locker as a surprise. And we crossed our fingers.
Here is that Gofundme. We did it. In less than 24 hrs six people had contributed the money we needed.
I believe in fairies
'I've Never Been 94 Before'
May 2022
94yrs young today, congrats Diane…literally one of the sweetest souls ever and Angela Lansbury’s number one fan. She once met Angela and watches Murder She Wrote every day...and since her 93rd birthday does so drinking tea out of the ' Thank you for that piece of information' Angela Lansbury mug we gave her last year.
Fairies supported her helping her daughter Julz ( who has been her full time care giver for many years) with a few celebrations today including surprise phone renditions from three of our finest singing fairies.
In return, Diane treated us to a stupendous rendition of 'I've Never Been 94 Before'. I'll add the words here when I get them from her. Maybe one day, like her, you'll be lucky enough to have the opportunity to sing it.
Happy Bob
May 6th, 2022.
Bob’s piano brings him great comfort. He copes with debilitating hearing issues, not just loss of hearing but ringing in the ears etc which make it very difficult to be in public areas, use the phone etc.
So it’s Bob staying in with his piano for much of the day.
When his fairy partner Wynn discovered he didn’t have a piano stool, we found one for sale in his hometown. THE most beautiful vintage one. Blacksmith built in the 1920s with claw feet clenching crystal balls. It was modestly priced as the height adjuster no longer worked. We asked if the seller might reduce the price so we could buy it for him.
They gifted it to him.
He loved it. LOVED it, the height it was stuck at was just fine …..but had to tell us that as it is antique and a bit wobbly and he is also antique lol it wasn’t safe to use. He would treasure it but not sit on it.
Imagine if I could call a furniture restorer in Marin and ask a complete stranger to fix Bob’s stool …the same day…for free.
I almost didn’t even try.
Please join me in beaming fairy love to Narahel Gomez, owner of Marin Furniture Clinic in San Rafael. Such incredible skill and generosity with both free labor and materials.
I mentioned that Bob finds the phone very very difficult, Wynn and I always communicate with him by text.
Bob phoned Narahel to thank him.

Saluting Pauline Angleman, 113 yrs young
With heavy heart.
I’m afraid we lost our precious 113yr old Good Fairy, Pauline this afternoon. Her fairy partner Paul and I were utterly utterly smitten with her, honored to have played an important role in the last year of her life and deeply touched to have been so embraced by the family as ‘ on the list’ of those kept informed and allowed to visit towards the end.
She was fascinating, hilarious, competitive, curious, sharp of mind, frank in expressing opinions, interested in people and lazer focused on a bargain. We (mainly Paul who was incredibly generous with his time) took her on Dr visits, shopping trips and other errands. He and his wife often popped in with dinner and ate with her and I liked to come by with surprises. We learned new things from her, I found out you should keep a toothpick by your stove to test vegetables were done… she experimented with enthusiasm at new things presented to her…especially edible ones..cheese puffs, ice cream nuggets.
We disagreed with her freely, we were loud and jovial in scolding her for being opinionated or crotchety ( when telling the hearing aid lady her product was as useless as a bit of cardboard, sparing with Rite Aid staff about the application of an invalid voucher or glaring with unveiled horror at scantily clad teenagers, for example). We refused to treat her as an adorable old lady or someone too old to be expected to behave. She informed all who met us while with her that we were a hindrance and awfully cheeky. And …and she took the time to leave long detailed voicemails noting all we had done the next day and giving us a masterclass in how to say thank you ..and how to experience life the happiest way, sincerely filled with gratitude.
When I asked Paul to be her fairy my brief was for him to be as rude to her as possible and not let her get away with anything. I had been warned she could eat volunteers for breakfast and we may find her demanding. It was as Paul said tonight ‘the ride of our lives on a thoroughbred stallion’. As part of our arguing policy Paul laboriously fact checked her memories ( always spot on. The Yankees did stay at the hotel she was working in in 1937).
My fav story about her was of Paul starting to mime and speak intermittently at her when they were leaving her Dr’s office with her new hearing aids …and her attacking him with her walking stick.
A few weeks ago I called her up speculatively one evening from a bar in Santa Monica as I was on vacation and would miss her birthday, she was in great form so I told her the bar tender wanted to wish her a happy birthday too, he was promptly summoned to the phone and what I expected to be a 3 second greeting developed into quite a chat, I can see him now, talking, listening, nodding, laughing, ignoring several customers. At the end he told me it was one of the best things that had ever happened to him and my wine glass magically refilled itself. Another magic sauce ingredient of a happy life, Pauline, such a capacity to enjoy new people as well as savoring long held acquaintances.
My last, fond memory of her just last week was her holding my hand and introducing me to two neighbors “ this …is my fairy”. Paul’s last fond memory also last week was her expertly concealing half a bacon sandwich ( which he had smuggled in) under a napkin while talking to the nurse.
Paul is a talented photographer and managed to get her to gussy up for some photos a few months ago. This is the one she chose to have on her wall. She was bribed with a bucket of Kentucky Fried Chicken and gave him 8 mins for the entire shoot before demolishing it with huge enjoyment. I told her she looked like she was about to say something cheeky in it. ‘ oh course I was”, she replied” I was looking at that Paul …. And he would have deserved it”.
My sincere thank you to Paul and his wife for bringing so much comfort, fun and love to Pauline in her last year. And for giving her the gift of knowing for sure she was giving all the same things back in equal measure.
I was delivering a cherry tomato plant from Good Fairy one evening when I had the fun of telling her she was now officially the 4th oldest person in America. She was shamelessly exuberant that someone had died - we had a long standing joke that she wanted to submit a request to Good Fairy asking us to bump off the rest of them. But she always made a firm point that if any of them were in a nursing home or in a wheelchair it didn't count. To her longevity only continued to be a true lark if coupled with independence. She was literally still living by herself in the same home she had been in for many decades until just a month ago when she fell and broke her hip. She had some meals delivered but still prepared much of her own food, pots were always boiling or sizzling on the stove and timers going off in her kitchen. I believe she did the vast amount of her own cleaning and laundry, was in charge of her own medications, certainly went into battle with the likes of the phone company on her own behalf, had an eagle eyed command of her own finances, wrote her own checks.
Even after her hip break - and this astounded me - she was back at home almost immediately. She got to be there for her 113th birthday and, I believe, would be absolutely pumped to know she successfully passed away there. She was concerned she may no longer really be independent as she now had 24 hr nursing staff but I assured her it still counted as it was temporary. Joy, the nurse on duty needed no prompting to chime in her agreement that Pauline was still boss in this house.
And of course this wasn't just any house. This was the home she had shared with her beloved husband Louis until he passed away. When I asked her if she missed him one day, she surprised me with the very tender confession that she really just felt he was still there, a presence in the house, sitting in his armchair.
Now you are off now to the great supermarket in the sky, where vouchers never expire and Folgers coffee is always on special.
You will be missed. And you will be lastingly, lovingly and laughingly remembered as long as I live....by your standards that could be quite some time.

CHAIRity fundraiser
Multi-talented but also multiply injured low income Fairfax senior, Judithe, first contacted Good Fairy asking for help organizing her home. The Good Fairies who assisted her ( Kevan, Andrew and Tiffany) were fascinated by stories of her colorful life and the way she told them. Before dedicating 14 yrs of her life to care for her mother, she traveled the world as a gourmet chef and culinary tutor, picking up fluency in five languages on the way. But they also drew our attention to how much pain she was in. I ( Penny) surprised them with a pizza to celebrate the completion of her organizing session and it was a blast but ...upsetting. While much of her pain was clearly to be expected due to her physical challenges, it became clear that she was coping with VERY unnecessary pain. We needed to do something about the reclining chair she spends most of the day and all night it.
Good Fairy Liz who is an ER nurse popped in to clarify the situation for us and we consulted her Dr. And yes. It was best for Judithe to spend both day and all night in this type of reclining chair rather than a bed. And yes, HER chair was very broken and most importantly it wasn't wide enough for her, to the extent it was crushing her sides ..every moment of every day. Judithe though still beautiful both inside and out is understandably upset she has gained weight due to lack of mobility and the effect of medications she needs, we all would be. But the width she needs in a chair is especially wide not just because of this but due to a wide posture her injuries dictate. So wide, there was literally only ONE lift chair on the market that was wide enough for her and fulfilled all the other criteria Liz kindly clarified for us. And it was powered, dramatically reducing the stress of getting in and out of it. And cost $2,000
We spent some time taking advice from many fairies - thank you Andrea, Kevan, Debra, Liz ..and we made a robust attempt to get a new chair provided as a medical necessity. But there came a time when we all knew a very lovely lady was suffering, her physical and mental energy and positivity declining, who amongst us could suffer agony every day and cope with that mentally knowing a huge amount of pain could be lifted if only you had enough money to buy a new chair. And - beyond that, for Judithe, with money, there was also the opportunity of having not just a comfortable recliner but exactly the right power operated lift chair that would enable her to get to her feet in comfort and without further damaging her body. The latter being the key to her eventually not needing that chair.
And frankly we just needed to go buy a chair. There was no way any kind of medical insurance etc was going to pay for the exact chair she needed, or pay for any part of it any time soon. And the cost in terms of her pain and more importantly the erosion of her hope
We did a private fundraiser where we contacted a few fairies well known to us who have been generous before, explained the urgency, and secured the money.( thank you esp Sarah, Colleen, Deb, Liz and Barbara). We got to know Trisha Smarr from the chair manufacturer, SpinLife, during the ordering process. She very then kindly covered the $250 cost of white glove delivery service. For which she has earned herself a ladybug rock!
And then..
When the chair arrived it was quite the celebration!!!! Judithe gifted her old chair to a low income gentleman senior in her building. Though broken it was immaculate. Good Fairy Granny Sottile also made a throw for the gentleman to keep his chilly knees warm ...and he was super comfy and snug!
Good Fairy Barbara (who had lead the charge in the involved process of placing and monitoring the chair order) also arranged a wonderful surprise for Good Fairy Judithe to celebrate the arrival of her new chair. She had previously given Judithe two cook books, gifted by her friend, their author, Heidi Khraling, owner of Insalata's in San Anselmo. This was because the order took a while and Judithe very much needed our support to hang on in there as every day of waiting was a long one and some days she felt like giving up. It was the perfect gift to distract her and much appreciated. Now Barbara treated Judithe, her cargiver Natalia and me!!! to dinner on her at Insalata. Judithe is able to spend short lengths of time in a powered wheelchair and was able to visit the restaurant in person. It was a wonderful evening - such fun for me to get to know Natalia her caregiver and see the fantastic relationship she has with her client, including a buoyant and deliciously naughty sense of humor including several 'in' jokes ...one of which is every man they encounter if he is married lol. I also heard in more detail how Natalia had herself tried to raise money to help with a chair but the amount was too great. She was every bit as grateful as Judithe herself to have her client and friend out of such pain. Thank you Barbara for such a generous gift, and for falling ill that evening so I got to eat your meal :0)
There was also a celebrity appearance by Insalata's owner, Heidi, herself at dinner - she treated us to an extra little tasting menu and oh boy did the two of them agree on food and flavors! Judithe was able to guess the exact ingredients of everything we tested on her...quite the party trick. And it reminded me of my first conversation with her..she needed our help but she also said ' use me, use me...I have so much offer, I'm a chef, I speak five languages, don't let me go to waste'. And of course this is very much the good fairy way, a fairy circle if you like. It's so incredibly important that we DO appreciate the skills and passion to help others that exist within the very community of people who need help. It's a win win.
So we've been exploiting Judithe shamelssly ever since she got her paws on her chair. Judithe has been baking with Natalia's assistance to thank those who contributed to the chair, and I can guarantee ...she is a VERY good chef. And she is now enrolled as a Sugarplum fairy taking commissions to make baked goods for folks! She has also become our special diet fairy and helps people with medical challenges, new diets, very low income etc who can benefit from her recipes and advice. And she has been most helpful reaching out to those wishing for a companionship caller in one of the five languages she speaks. During our Spring Cleaning for a Senior campaign we often employed clearers who do not speak English fluently so ' dial a Spanish speaker' can be a handy service.
We have also applied for a UPS battery from The Marin Center For Independent Living's Powered an Prepared program so Judithe will be able to power the chair and enable herself to stand up if there is a power outage. It is yet to arrive and we've already had an outage so another silver lining...in order to get out of the chair she had to call the fire brigade ...a chance to find out if a few splendid men in uniforms were married...

NB: It was our pleasure to also present Heidi with a ladybug stone to thank her for the HUGE contribution she made proactively gifting meals to vulnerable folks from the very beginning of the pandemic as well as taking part in county programs as they were created such as The Great Plates program. For those who don't know, there is no other restaurant I am aware of that gave with such generosity and with such consistency. To use a culinary term. Heidi is a good egg! Go eat at her restaurant!
And here is a letter that Judithe sent to us, to express her feelings of anguish turned to gratitude and then a determination to give back.
My Dearest Penny,
It is with a grateful hand that I write these humble words to express the unfathomable appreciation I have for all that you and your selfless tribe of kind-hearted Good Fairies have done to better my life on so many fronts.
It is not just the physical comforts and betterment that you have afforded this long-time aching body but the spiritual support that all have contributed by bringing comfort, emotional security, friendship and support.
Each and every one of you have made my problem your problem.
The camaraderie among all of you punctuates the fact that in a world of Independence we are truly Interdependent upon one another.
It's Good Fairies’ platform that you spearhead serves as an inspiration for all those who have benefited from the empathy and compassion that you and yours share in spite of your own personal challenges. Least we forget that with every knot, the rope gets stronger.
I feel privileged to be able to contribute after 75 years upon this Earth even in small measure through my honed culinary skills.
Most Sincerely from your “Sugarplum Fairy in Training” and on behalf of my caregiver Natalia, co-pilot and partner in crime, who faces many personal challenges herself yet has remained loyal in caring for me and for that, I am forever grateful,
From your Sugarplum in Training,
Judithe
Finest of Fairies
Kevan.
On Sunday 3rd Oct, we lost a beautiful person, our Kevan. Aged 66.
Kevan Fugate was quietly self proclaimed to be a fairy in every possible way. He’d answer the phone saying ‘ Hellooooo….Good Fairy in the flesh! “
And during his last, brutally vicious though mercifully brief tussle with cancer when I dropped of a few things personal items of comfort and silly things to surprise him at Marin Health .. especially a pink flamingo sippy cup, He sent me a classic text saying “thank you from one queen to another”.
An exuberant, snazzy though also modest and private man. Witty, interesting, informative. Boy had he perfected the art of telling a hilarious or dramatic tale. His southern accent and deliberately hammed up campness squeezing the last drop of joy or gasp of shock from it. He was also of course THE most appreciative audience. Even when coping with terrible pain.
One day I hope to meet him again ..up there …and be introduced to that mother of his! Clearly one hell of a lady who encouraged him to be himself, enriched him with a multitude of sage and fun sayings and inspired him to specialize in end of life caregiving .. doing for others what he so lovingly first did for her.
He warmed to those suffering from dementia. Perhaps the clients others would not pick. And he sucked up their eccentricities with a blend of some frustration but mainly humor. I once called him to find him wheeling a client to the checkout at Good Earth, Fairfax. His client had laboriously squeezed every tomato and avocado in the place then decided not to buy any, then visited the asparagus where with sinking heart Kevan spectated him yet again drawing just two spears out of a bundle for which Kevan was invited to haggle a price. .
Few of his clients stayed at home once he had his paws on them. If physically possible, he’d take them out to lunch or off to have ice cream by the seaside or to tootle over the Golden Gate Bridge playing their favorite songs for a lark. And all of this was done not just for the sheer pleasure of brightening their day and his own but also the pleasure of making a difference to their families.
I believe the greatest honor of his life was to be mentioned by name by a grateful family in an obituary. And it happened several times
I brought you some beautiful flowers and a ladybug stone from your friends and the fairies today and kissed you goodbye. I made sure to put a little bit of paper under the vase so it didn’t stain the sideboard. I could just hear you saying ‘ ohh mind the walnut … “, and then : “ thank you darl’n …love you too”.
Safe home. Finest of fairies.

Marin City Convertible Car Graduation Parade 2021!
Bayside MLK, Jr. Academy, Marin City, Tuesday 29th June 2021
Good Fairy was honored to support the children and staff of this fantastic middle school on their graduation day for the second year running. This is sheer magic. Yet again Principal Finnane and I were astonished we managed to pull it off as 4.30pm came and THE most gorgeous convertible cars started streaming into town. Thank you to all the owners and drivers who brought the cars and gave their time so generously.
The line of convertible cars stretched as far as the eye could see behind a fire truck and a fleet of motorbikes ( including a pink one!. Enough for every student and teacher to ride in style. There was a fabulous mixture of vehicles, a scarlet Thunderbird, a 1954 racing green Austin Healey, three jeeps, a Chevy Mustang, a Ford Cobra, a gold Porsche, a 1956 Ford Fairline Sunliner, Jeeps, BMWs, Audi's and Toyotas. And as it was last year, it was deeply touching to know each one was there due to the kindness of a stranger who owns a convertible car or could borrow one .. and felt it was important to be there just to ensure these young people and teachers had fun and felt valued.
It's quite something to release these wonderful children into the world knowing there are people like you in it.
Let's hear it for...car owners and drivers Hamish, Fox and 'Dastardly', Finis and 'Penelope', Brian 'Thunderbird' , Barb, Steve, Craig, Chris, Cynthia, Devin, Parker, Louise and Ian, Jim and 'Delilah', Bernadette, Jennifer and kiddo, Viktor, Wesley and companion, Natalie, Dave, Golda, Lauren and Doug. Hurrah for Kevin and his car washing, for Fox and Bernadette who helped put out balloons on the parade and cars and for the Good Fairy rock painting team who made commemorative stones for the students.
We are also just indebted to Good Fairy Paul Stonehouse who took such characterful graduation portraits and captured the parade day completely free of charge. And to our IT guru and Goat Herder, Jeff who compiled this video.
Congrats to David, Amahji, Tahjon, Jayla and Andrea and thank you Bayside for being so welcoming and appreciative of our Good Fairies..and for inviting us to have refreshments at the end.
Same time next year?

Leafy Friends 2021!
In July we started offering a leafy friend or two to individuals and groups who may benefit from the joy, wonder and tasty outcome of gardening but for whom plants are either not accessible or affordable. In addition to various veg, herb and fruit friends we were delighted to offer unusual varieties of many plants thanks to our partner Paradise on Picnic and their wizardry with seed diversity. We also got our paws on some rather groovy special bags for growing potatoes in this year ( with a handy side flap to reach the potatoes) and have launched a potato challenge.
Thank you to these shiny stars..
Az and Sean from Paradise on Picnic , San Rafael. They donated hundreds of plants, their passion for seed diversity provided us with rare/unusual varieties. Sean also build several grow boxes, including some idea for people who are using a wheelchair.
Sleepy Hollow Home Owners Association and Good Fairy Tim donated and raising seedings and Good fairy Sheri also donated several gorgeous plants.
Nancy and team at West Marin Compost donated a cubic yard of compost, and Chipper Tom delivered it. Michelle and team at Marin Ace ( Merrydale Rd) donated 25 additional bags of compost.
Good Fairies Matt, Davis, Tiger and Michelle have potted and delivered many plants .
Recipients include...
Here are some organizations we are donating too, many of whom have accepted our potato challenge. As you can see, these are not all seniors, we also support single parents, people with disabilities, folks currently homeless and other low income or mobility compromised neighbors, and folks in need of a wee boost. Young Moms of Marin, Marin Center for Independent Living, The Good Fairy Community, Tay Space, Side by Side, Gilead House, Section 8 Housing community garden, Kentfield, Marin Community Fridges, The Cedars, Victory Village, Fairfax, The Avenues, San Francisco, Smith Ranch Transitional Care, San Rafael, People with Disabilities Succeeding

Ladybug Appreciation Stones
Fairy Spotting
Following the success of Project Lovebug - where we created over 4,000 ladybug stones for grocery store and food bank workers to acknowledge them as the unsung heros of Marin's frontline against the pandemic, we asked the Good Fairy community to keep painting. Now we gift ladybug stones to express gratitude to community helpers and to celebrate with or comfort individuals and organizations. And we ask our community to nominate recipients.
Why ladybugs?
In nature all ladybugs give out a slight smell, when they cluster together their combined odor is strong enough to ward of predators. They are a great example of a community working together, everyone offering what they can.
Recipients
Most go to individuals, we mail them, drop them off as a surprise or present them with a thank you card from the person who made the nomination. Some accompany our projects - each 'Leafy Friend' plant comes with a bug. We have also acknowledged these groups, Paradise on Picnic, A & S Landscapes, West Marin Compost, Novato Landscape Materials, Marin Color and Marin Ace who have made generous donations to us. And we have acknowledged the case workers at Ritter House and Community Action Marin's CARE team, The Marin Ombudsman staff and volunteers, The staff of The Marin Center For Independent Living, The staff of Mt Tam Orthopedics and Spine, Novato, The staff of San Anselmo Family Dentistry, Grocery workers in Boulder, Colorado, UCSF's MRI team and Downtown Streets staff. Giant bugs. These have been awarded to The San Francisco/Marin Food Bank, Victory Village affordable housing complex in Fairfax and The Las Gallinas Lions.

What’s so special about this Mom?
Celebrating a special Mom and The Good Fairy baby! Caitlin unwraps an adorable blanket handmade by Good Fairy Granny Sotille!!! to celebrate Baby Jax's first birthday and her birth of fire introduction to motherhood!
A year ago, Caitlin and her husband were starting a magical but incredibly difficult time. The early arrival of their first child and a nearly two-month stay in hospital during which - due to COVID-19 - neither of them could leave. The choice was stay at his side or quarantine for 2 weeks before returning...even if he fell gravely ill.
The pandemic had already taken a toll on them financially; not only could she not return to work as speedily as intended but now her self-employed husband could not work.
We helped them as best we could, you may remember a kind fairy gifted them a light vacuum cleaner. It was one of the first fairy wishes and enabled Caitlin to get her nesting done.
What you don't know is how wonderful this little family has been giving back to Good Fairy over the last year. Caitlin has taken photographs for Project Lovebug and has been a comforting and fun companionship caller to another single Mom. And her husband has been most generous with his time as a pest control expert for a few low income seniors.

The impossible photographs. A poignant fairy wish for a very special, grieving single Mom
A poignant, beautiful fairy wish, for a very special, grieving single Mom.
A year ago today this lovely young man, Louis, was killed in a freak kayaking accident. His body was never recovered. One moment his partner, Monica, was building a future with him and their precious baby, Noah, the next she was fighting for the will to carry on through a wall of shock, horror and grief to be there for her son, and give him the happiest little life possible on the tiniest budget ...very alone..with no close family support. And a depressing, isolating experience was of course made all the more challenging with the pandemic.
So Monica turned to Good Fairy Marin. Not to ask for help, but to throw herself into volunteering. She wanted to keep busy, feel a sense of purpose, help herself to hurt a little less by helping others who were hurting too. She has been just incredibly generous with her time, love and even what little money she has.
Today she choose to volunteer for us, keeping busy through such a tough day, driving food from Osteria Divino to seniors for The Great Plates Program for nearly two hours. The restaurant and fairies surprised her with flowers, we bought friendship bracelets for Noah to give out at a little memorial gathering - as his Dad loved bracelets. And we took some beautiful pictures of her and Noah wearing matching tee shirts saying they won't forget him.
And we also did something rather special. Good Fairy Hamish reached out to a software engineer who works in the Indianapolis office of his company, Y Media. Monica had surprised us by mentioning this morning how sad she is there is no picture of the three of them together. She spoke of longing to somehow 'photoshop' one just to comfort her and to give to Noah. In a matter
of hours thanks to a very talented Good Fairy on the East Coast, she had this photo. He is continuing to work with more images for her tomorrow.
Well done Monica. We are so very sorry for your loss. And can only imagine how very proud Louis would be of you, as we are.
Once Upon A Spring Day ...
... Just bask in this glorious story of neighborly love. MULTIPLE organizations collaborating with Good Fairy Marin to whoosh seasonal love and fun to some of our most vulnerable, isolated, hurting neighbors.
THIS happened - Monday 6th April
200 people currently homeless or battling to prevent becoming so received a cupcake decorated with a fluffy chick and candy through Ritter House and The Street Chaplaincy. Safeway, San Anselmo donated ALL those cupcakes.
70 people currently homeless and many also experiencing mental health challenges were surprised with little pots of Choc eggs and rabbit gummies by Community Action Marin’s CARE team.
Over 30 Fairies, Children For Change volunteers and Marin Rocks painters worked together to gather and package up the contents for 53 Spring Surprise packs, and deliver them to every corner of Marin, Bolinas, Sausalito, Novato and everywhere in between. These contained THE most beautiful spring themed painted stones, a sweet glass vase of daffodils, a selection of fruit, a colorful handmade cloth mask, a ridiculous fluffy chicken pen, a delightful greetings card made by a child and ...where permitted..chocolate eggs and candy. The fruit and daffodils were in part gifted by Trader Joe’s, Novato.
21 clients selected by The Marin Center For Independent Living and 32 folks in the Fairy community received the above mentioned packages. Most were seniors, living alone and without family..some were younger people isolated by mental or physical challenges ...three were ladies in their 30’s , 60’s and 80’s all facing their first spring without a beloved spouse. One we always have to mention and cherish ..is our beloved 112yr old fairy who detained her delivery lady for a solid hour of quite the most magical conversation she has every had.
In an exciting surprise twist, The Las Gallinas Lions offered Good Fairy a huge quantity of candy left over from their drive through Easter egg event. ( I stress the event was also a great success, attracting about 300 cars!!! They just had a LOT of candy). So .......30 low income single Moms and their kids received a Spring Fun Pack containing oodles of candy, ladybug and spring themed painted stones and vouchers for Silberman’s ice cream. These were distributed through The Marin Center For Domestic Peace, Gilead House and Marin Single Moms. And were presented in cake boxes gifted to us on 5 minute notice by Good Earth, Fairfax. The head of the bakery told us he didn’t have the authority to ok anything like that…what time would we like to pick them up? Just when I thought I couldn’t love Earthlings more!!
We tried and failed to connect to single Dads - a question for the future. Email: team@goodfairy.org if you have ideas
And here are a few reactions from recipients !!!
“ I’m so happy…I feel …um ..um ..someone is looking after me’, Voicemail from Senior, San Anselmo
‘ All these goodies and especially meeting Deborah, she was wonderful to talk to. Oh my heart is warm. I’m very touched. You ARE my good fairy.’ Text from Senior, Bolinas
‘Such a beautiful …..flowers, candy..everything..fruit and ( laughs ) it was just gorgeous and still is and I do enjoy it so much. It was so nice of you to .. you must have gone to a lot of trouble to get together so many nice things..thank you. It certainly made an Easter holiday for sure it helped so much. And the young lady who brought it was really a nice person, it was nice to have her visit me. I want to thank you again for remembering and thinking of me on the Easter Day. So thank you again a thousand times. ‘ Voicemail from Good Fairy Pauline from Corte Madera - aged 112 ½ yrs young!! ( yes really)
“ Dear wee wonderful fairies - Today I received your lovely box with banana, orange, apple, a beautiful sheep rock, and an adorable drawing made by Mia, age 8. Such a delightful surprise and I thank you very much.’ Email from Senior, San Rafael
'Their eyes just lit up when they saw the daffodils’ Fairy volunteer

‘I can’t tell you how delightful it was to receive a spring basket from Cassidy and Sierra ( these are Children For Change Volunteers who delivered to her) a few weeks ago. If there is any way to let them know how much it meant to me, please do.’ Email from Senior, San Anselmo
The families have been through so much. I like to find fun in a lot of the things we do at Gilead House. The kids were very concerned that the Easter Bunny didn’t have a mask and would not show up. I let them know, the Good Fairies sewed the Easter Bunny a special mask and gave him GPS and a map. Those Good Fairies ROCK! Email from Sheltered housing & support center, Gilead House, Novato
' ...we are deeply grateful for these heartfelt gifts' through which our families ' are afforded the warmth of knowing how much their community truly cares about them' The Center For Domestic Peace, San Rafael
‘….yesterday I received this wonderful box and daffodils. And I wanted to call and say how much I appreciated it and how much of a fairy I am. I've always been. My Mom was a full-blooded Irish woman, so I was raised on fairies and I'm ninety nine years old now, and I still love them’. Voicemail from Senior, Fairfax
‘…I had the honor, the HONOR of a visit from the fairies …’ Voicemail from Senior, Fairfax
Many people told us what they had done with their flowers and painted stones. One senior in Terra Linda had placed daffodils beside a picture of her mother. Very sadly the Mom had only just passed away, just weeks before both of them had received their COVID-19 shots and would have been able to see each other again..
Did you notice that the two people who took the most time and trouble to leave detailed thank you voicemails were our two oldest fairies. Maybe there is a lesson for us all to learn in being so appreciative and interested in others as a recipe for a long and happy life.
Thank you everyone!!! SAME TIME NEXT YEAR?

It's Cold Out There - sleeping bag drive for agencies that help people who are currently homeless.
Good Fairy asked Ritter Center how best we could "do something" to help them help the homeless. We wanted to work with an established county organization specializing in supporting this group to ensure our good intentions were channeled in the best way possible. We expected the answer would be to fund raise and give them money. But this was the result. Could we give them 25 comprehensive winter care packages including warm, water resistant sleeping bags for an especially vulnerable group of their clients: ladies who are currently homelessness? We also asked who amongst their staff should be recognized for their work supporting people who are homeless in this terribly difficult year. They immediately told us about six amazing case workers.
We called this our 'Sleeping bag drive' and asked folks to 'sponsor a sleeping bag' for $80 which covered the cost of the bag and the care pack contents we bought and appreciation gifts for the staff to be honored.
The fundraiser worked so well and we did such fantastic deals with local suppliers and wholesale purchases that we were able to bring the huge sum of $600 back to our sleeping bag supplier, Big Five in Terra Linda and ask what we could do together with this. We hope to secure around 40 more bags and perhaps some sturdy backpacks and will bring these to various organizations.
'Beanies, Socks and Valentine chocs'.
As we went along we secured an excess of 100 beanies from a gentleman who has made 20,000 beanies ' for homeless heads'. So we used some of our donation money to add to them and enabled Rev Marty from Marin's interfaith The Street Chaplaincy to bring some Valentine themed comfort to her weekly hot meal for around 60 folks who are currently homeless in the form of 'Beanies, Socks and Valentine chocs'. And we surprised our beloved, inspiring Rev Marty with a love bug stone and a cosy scarf made by a local senior.
Second hand tent, sleeping bag and camping back pack drive
In addition to purchasing supplies, Good Fairy launched a second drive to collecting these items. Tents are a sensitive subject. We all acknowledge permanent housing is the ultimate goal for all. However, these items are gold dust to the agencies we support and simply too expensive to buy. The response was tremendous. We have had 7 tents donated to date. All received with sheer delight.
Logistics on our winter care packages
The winter care packages contents reflected Ritter Center's expertise on what would be most most appreciated right now, and a little touch of Good Fairy neighborly love to warm the heart as well. We also timed delivery to coincide with Valentines Day.
Here is the full list . In addition to the expected underwear, socks. rain coverings, snack foods, warm clothing etc we added two appreciation stones from Marin Rocks - one to keep and one to gift, there was also a friendship bracelet, Valentine candy, pens and notepads and we gifted the center a supply of stamps, envelopes and writing paper
We also asked Ritter House who amongst their staff should be recognized for their work supporting people who are homeless in this terribly difficult year. They immediately told us about six amazing case workers. We presented these guys with appreciation packages, contents included a travel mug saying ' thank you for being awesome' a hand made scarf from a local senior, an invitation to have a professional portrait taken, a friendship bracelet, candy and an exquisite individualized appreciation stone from Marin Rocks with their name on it.
See the Ritter Center story. They have been helping to prevent homelessness and improve the health and well-being of individuals and families who are homeless since 1980. In addition to providing 'safety net' services such as clothing, food, showers, laundry and restroom facilities they now also provide case management, medical care, behavioral health counselling and housing support.
Project Love Bug
In August 2020, Good Fairy Marin started receiving calls from a number of grocery store workers seeking help with depression and anxiety. We wondered if there was something we could do to whoosh some community love, understanding and support to them to boost their morale - and to encourage the public to be proactive in their kindness towards to these workers - see them as essential front line heroes.
We contacted every grocery outlet in Marin from Costco to farm stands and offered them a basket of appreciation stones, hand painted by The Good Fairy community. Each was a ladybug and known as 'love bug'. We offered enough to give one to every employee if they would like that. The response was wonderful. The first delivery was on Labor Day 2020, 150 stones for Good Earth in Fairfax, and finished at the New Year. The final deliveries honored the staff and volunteers of Whistlestop / Vivalon and the San Francisco/ Marin food bank. The latter received a cool 1,000 stones....and one giant bug which is now greeting staff at the San Francisco headquarters.
Here are the details --lots of fun pictures of the bugs. This was a real community story. The story of who painted them as well as who received them.
'My words alone cannot fully express how much this means to ALL of us employed at Mollies. I'm teary eyed typing this message as I think of all the fantastic and caring people who created these beautiful works of art for us.
The time, and energy included, plus the warm messages on the bottoms of many is truly the best of human kindness' .Ellen Segale, Wellness Dept. Manager at Mollie Stone's Market
Logistics
We choose the design as it was simple, fun and open to creativity but also because ladybugs know the strength of a community working together. Each gives of a slight odor, but when they gather together at times of danger the scent is strong enough to ward off predators.
We knew we needed to help people participate by giving them materials so worked with community partners, Marin Color , and A&S Landscapes who donated gallons of paint and thousands of stones and with Marin Landscape Materials who discounted more stones. We also used donation money to purchase bulk paint pots and brushes and created bug making kits. A network of 13 bug pick and drop off locations we set up around Marin, and we delivered kits to hundreds of individuals and organizations who were SIP. The first kits were given to Marin's most isolated and vulnerable, especially retirement communities and groups of folks with mental/physical disabilities. Marin's Education authority created bug kits and sent them to all the special needs students, at the time the only kids receiving in class teaching. Soon the general public joined in with school children, guides and scouts, families etc taking part. High school students from Terra Linda organized pop up socially distanced outdoor painting parties .
The bugs ranged enormously in size, style and levels of artistic perfection. Many were works of art - especially those from the Marin Rocks Facebook group. Others were clearly done by seniors with dementia, folks with disabilities and small children. You looked into each basket - and it just said 'community'. This message accompanied the stones ( in Spanish and English):
"These were painted for you by your entire community ....seniors in retirement homes, people with disabilities, folks who are homeless, school children, families, seniors self isolating and everyone else...even some 90 yr old nuns!!! They did this to say "You are appreciated and respected. Thank you for being an essential front-line worker during this pandemic. Marin is so grateful as you cope with a greatly altered workplace and serve customers who are also facing stresses and challenges."
We are still making bugs and gift them to community helpers as mark of love and respect. Some of these now continue to be giant ones!
To see Mom
Low income, senior Good Fairy Bruce San Rafael needed a ride to visit his mother who is in her nineties. She is in very ill health, not communicating or eating much now and being cared for in a Jewish nursing home in San Francisco. He contacted us in January. He had seen her for the first time in months a few weeks ago and was desperate to see her again. For so long he hadn't been allowed to visit, now he was allowed to - he couldn't get there. His only option to travel is public transport. He doesn't have a vehicle and an Uber fare is beyond him. Despite his determination and encyclopedic knowledge of public transport routes! it was impossible due to his own health issues and the limitations on transport connections now due to COVID-19. With a lively sense of humor he joked the journey may kill him and she might pass away with the wait.
The family has a fascinating history, a Jewish family from Germany ...the Mom's favorite cousin was executed for resistance activities and Bruce had visited the scene of the execution just before the pandemic. The place has been preserved as a museum. The bullet holes are still in the wall. The family enjoy that her attempt to survive was a plea that she had no idea what the men in the group were doing. A joke through the generations about the demur nature of ladies in the family. Bruce has documented her story and his Mom's own story of coming to America. When we asked for a ride we could also offer a story in return ...and 'it would certainly fill a card ride and your heart very easily', we said.
Across various social media platforms including Nextdoor and Facebook we immediately secured Good Fairy Liz as our fantastic lead driver, offering to take him to see her every 7-10 days. She happens to be a fully vaccinated experienced ER nurse! and as I write we are drawing together a team of three others to support her. We also have two kind souls supporting us on his wider needs securing practical and emotional comfort items for him and his Mom at this terribly tough time. Good Fairy Paul joined in with rides to SF too and even incorporated a little shoe shopping and some greatly appreciated home made dinners for Bruce. We are now able to give Bruce a little ' Treating Mom' fund to play with. At the beginning of the pandemic Bruce was allowed to bring her a little stuffed dog from home. When he visited in January he was so thrilled she was still holding it. We hope to get a photo taken of Bruce, Mom and the stuffed dog on his next visit and put it in a frame for him.
One of our fairy helpers, Good Fairy Freea, offered support and explain why Bruce's story especially connected with her. She was once unable to reach a grandmother in time due to financial issues. A more expensive, faster ticket was beyond her and there was no-one to help. For those of us who have never had to face financial hardship, or ever been without a support network of friends/family to turn to for help before we actually have to suffer practical and emotional hardships ….here is our reminder that it happens, it happens quietly behind closed doors, it happens to perfectly smart, lovely people who always seem to have a smile and a ‘look on the bright side’ attitude. And it happens to people in Marin when they are surrounded by neighbors who would be not just delighted but deeply enriched by helping if only they knew the story.
Funnily enough - Bruce contacted Good Fairy as he needed help getting items from a storage facility, another catch 22 ..he couldn't afford the storage and couldn't afford to pay for someone to pick it up. We only found out about his Mom when we started talking to him. Our very special thanks to Good Fairy Benjamin who is also helping Bruce by doing the storage pick up.
In March Bruce's mother passed away. Thanks to Good Fairy Paul, he had visited her just the day before.
The Accidental Fireball Fairy
Story by Good Fairy Julz and her mother, Diana
My hero Fairy Angel Penny. I was at a moment of desperation. My oven had just exploded in a fireball in my face.
My first reaction, was to instantly assess my physical condition, and it seemed that although I had singed hair and my arm was a little bit red, I ran it under the faucet and got a wet cloth and put it on my arm.
I am a caregiver for my 92-year-old mother. I am the only person who cares for her. I have no back up plan for when I cannot serve her tea or change her channels or help her go to the bathroom.
Mother was oblivious to any of this, but as the minutes passed the pain got worse. I paced and tried to think what to do.
I moved to Marin about 2 months ago. it has been my life dream and accomplishment, after having gone through an ugly divorce. I knew I would feel at home here, a place I’ve never even been to, where I didn’t know a single soul.
Here I was pacing in increased pain, Not knowing where the hospital was, not knowing who could take care of my mother and really not thinking I could drive at this point.
When I first moved here and needed someone to help me move my mother to this house, I got the name of Penny and the Good Fairies.
I had spoken to her on the phone at length and that meant a lot just having someone to connect to. I never thought I would need her in this big a way.
I have been trying to put into words what it feels like when thank you is not enough.
What do you say when you are flabbergasted that a virtual stranger would go out of their way for you beyond What do you believe your own family would do?
The moment I saw Penny, I burst out in tears because I was in agony and also because I needed someone to take care of me.
When someone sees you at your worst The first time they meet you in person, and you haven’t even had a chance to make that personal impression, One feels exposed and naked and embarrassed in a way. But she saw me in a true light.
She spoke to my mother and arranged for another blessed Good Fairy to come and watch my mother. (Thank you Kevan!!) She then drove me to the emergency room, stayed there for hours before going back to help with my mother and then came back to the emergency room to pick me up late at night and drive me to get my pain prescription. And drove me home.
I don’t know that I will ever be as kind and generous as this Good Fairy was to me. I have been astounded. I could only hope that that kind of human kindness is something I can assimilate from her.
God Bless You Our Penn, and Kevan and Thank you for helping me in my hour of need but especially thank you for teaching me about true kindness.
Comment from Good Fairy - it was such a pleasure to support you and your lovely Mom ( who loves the show Murder She Wrote and one met Angela Landsbury! ). You were incredibly brave, you were in SO much pain. I'm so glad we got you care as fast as we could . Hurray for incredibly strong pain killers. Seeing you love the surprise of comfort fairy Pumpkin Macphail waiting for you outside the hospital, and then spending time playing with the Halloween toys in CVS at 12.45am while waiting for your prescription with you was among my favorite all time Good Fairy moments. I'm going to have to get you one of those creepy walking hands for Halloween. Love Penny xx

Great Pumpkin Story 2020
All of our pumpkins have now left Fairyland destined for the recipients. The pumpkins are so beautiful - 33 of them! - thank you Lions of Marinwood for your generosity and creativity. My fav was the one with x eyes !
The notes to accompany them just lovely - thanks Madison and Sarah!
The letter writing program will build on this whoosh of love to these folks - thank you Sophie, Sarah and Madison!
And thank you Lisa for all you do, for your inspiration in starting People With Disabilities Succeeding - this is such a very special organization. And for bringing these slam dunk divine people into our fairy community.
A special shout out to Manda who is taking one pumpkin all the way to Santa Rosa tonight. I will never forget Niles' face when we told him Good Fairy would reach him too.
Here's the background story.
With a little bit of fairy dust 33 carved lighted pumpkins appeared as if by magic almost simultaneously at the home of 33 very special people last night. The are the clients of Marin's incredible People With People with Disabilities Succeeding.
Frankly we approached this group to see if they'd like to paint some rocks for project Ladybug. They didn't lol! ,but it was the start of a beautiful relationships.
We asked how COVID-19 was going for the clients, families and staff, and Director, Lisa Markely explained they have an unbeatable, creative, challenging and loving weekly schedule on Zoom but especially welcome receiving real things in the mail and some contact with new people. She was also concerned that Halloween - normally the VERY most exciting day of the year and the biggest PDS party would just not bring the joy it normally does.
Novato High School school fairies Sarah and Madison helped Lisa to pack and distribute a gorgeous selection of Halloween decoration and treats for each family.
And then.....a little extra fun. On a zoom call, students were told to expect a Saturday night surprise. There was a LOT of excitement and even some squealing..mostly from me.
On the Saturday before Halloween, the AMAZING Lions of Marinwood gifted 33 gloriously carved pumpkins to Fairyland. We added sweet notes prepared by the girls and battery lights. And a team of fairies fluttered over Marin from Marin City to Novato and to Santa Rosa delivering them as a surprise as night fell. Thank you to our delivery team!!! Liz, Marianne, Jackie and daughter, Deborah, Sophia, Madison and her Dad and Manda. They ALL had a glorious time!!
To build on this, three high school fairies, Madison and Sarah joined forces with Mill Valley high schooler Sophie to help us coordinate a notecard writing campaign. All 33 students will receive a weekly cheer card from their own individual fairy just whooshing a little love and fun into their lives and yielding a ' you got mail' moment to look forward to each week. And our friends at The Lions of Marinwood are writing lots of those letters!
We know these fantastic folks will have great fun with those pumpkins and decorations this week as Halloween approaches. Now the Lions and Good Fairy notecard team have been invited to drop in on the PDS zoom Halloween party to see all the costumes. I hope they won't be too scary.
Such a lovely project for integrating people of various ages and locations in Marin..we even got to dabble with a little foreign language.
As we said in a special note to one student who is deaf and his caregiver speaks Vietnamese.
'Luôn tuyệt vời và có một Halloween tuyệt vời.'
Stay awesome and have a Great Halloween.

The Badfinger Fairies
When 88 yr old Grace contacted Good Fairy to discuss support we could offer, we just adored her immediately. She was keen to share details of her fascinating life. She moved from Liverpool, England when she was 22. She was a big band singer (regrets having to give this up to raise a family with her second husband, Richard) , is still a professional knitter and trampolines every day! But she also spoke openly of a few struggles and of several tragedies that had marked her life. She mentioned ( like so many folks) grief over the passing of loved ones was overwhelming her during SIP. For her, her nephew was especially on her mind, he had passed from suicide many years ago.
So we asked all about him, and were deeply touched to realise this lady was Tommy Evan's Auntie. If you don't know the story of Tommy and his band UK Badfinger do watch the video. As The Ivies they were the first band to be signed to the Beatles' label, the name was changed to Badfinger ( John Lennon wanted them to be called Glass Onion lol ), they sold 14 million albums, performed on several Beatles songs, and Paul and George wrote several of their songs.
One of their most famous and in my view most incredibly beautiful songs of all time is 'Without You' ..with it's memorable cry of anguish ' I can't live if living is without you'. A song that now carries with it the absolute tragedy that both vocalists passed away from suicide. First Pete Ham, and then, 8 years later, Grace's beloved nephew, Tommy.
Grace and her husband have been surrounded with love and thoughtful acts of comfort and kindness by many fairies. I'd like to share a few of these. It's quite the most moving example of our community pulling together.
Grace and her husband were sad someone had borrowed their edition of Ron Matovina's ' Without You. The Tragic story of Badfinger' and not returned it. We tracked down a copy but it was incredibly expensive, $125 was the best we could find. Within 24 hours Good Fairy Graham had found an edition online for $80. And Good Fairy Chris ( who lives in Minnesota) covered the cost. We will deliver it to Grace and Richard as a surprise .
Three fairies with a link to Liverpool and a passion for Tommy's music are set to call Grace for companionship calls.
As Richard is limited in mobility, two fairies will meet Grace to offer some company for her on a gentle stroll to hear more about her incredible life.
Good Fairy Monica will support with shopping and errands alongside our friends at Marin Villages.
Good Fairy Liz will be her cooking fairy and will brighten their lives with a weekly home cooked meal. We like to offer this for meal on wheels, if is one of the most loving and valued services our fairies do, and often leads to interesting recipe discoveries as we like to ask folks what meals they would really like ...perhaps a dish of cultural significance or linked to a fond memory. Grace didn't disappoint. Liz is at this moment making ' Scouse' - a traditional stew from her Liverpool. ( Here is is if you'd like to try it https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/155827-lfc-reveals-world-s-best-scouse-recipe)
High Schooler Good Fairy Alexander who is hoping to study music at college next year has already visited Grace and played his acoustic guitar outside her home. He will also be supporting Grace in learning to use her laptop. I have been telling her about all the video clips of Tommy on youtube especially of his wedding day. Grace would love to see it. She tells me they had two boys, Marianne never remarried.
There is the offer of someone to talk to about understanding/ coping with the suicide of a loved one.
Grace is passionate about home grown tomatoes. She now has a tomato fairy team with one senior supplying them and another delivering. They will keep her in tomatoes for the remainder of this season and start up again next year. The first delivery contained a note, so she will know how fondly the grower remembers her nephew.
And - rather exciting. A music fairy is going to take the one precious cassette tape of Grace performing with a Big Band and digitize it. High School fairy Alexander had never seen a casette tape before lol so Good Fairy Hamish will be handling this. I love how we mix the expertise of generations. I can't wait to hear it. She says the whole family was exceptionally musical.....and reprimanding herself for boasting ....some said she was the best of the lot!
We are also looking for a companionship caller for her husband. A quiet man who enjoys reading but also another fascinating life story to share. As if being married to Grace wasn't exciting enough ....he was a criminal detective!
It takes a community to help a community.

Tiger Tale Fairy
Tiger Tale Fairy
When Good Fairy checked that Corte Madera senior Jackie had a disaster evacuation 'go bag' sorted, we asked if she had a sentimental item as often these have lovely stories connected to them: ‘"Oh yes", she said, “ My Tiger. I wouldn’t leave without him”.
On 3rd March 1985, Jackie’s ex-husband was helping her leave hospital after a lumpectomy for breast cancer. A small furry tiger on a gift cart caught her eye and in an uncharacteristic move she told him they HAD to have it.. As soon as she held it she felt ‘ I’m going to be ok’.
After that Tiger (as this is his name) has always sat on her bed or bedside table apart from a few excursions mainly to accompany her on medical appointments; on two occasions he made it all the way inside MRI scanners with her. She says it’s funny, she doesn’t know why she has never felt embarrassed to do so. More recently, before COVID-19 stopped the fun, Tiger also participated in events at the intergenerational center in Corte Madera, where Jackie loved reading to children on Tuesdays.
Over the years she has twice felt the urge to gift little stuffies to those she loves when they are coping with challenges.
At the end of our conversation she also wondered how she could thank her fairy partner, Good Fairy Kristin, who has been utterly amazing supporting her with shopping and companionship during the pandemic. So we cooked up a plan where we had a stuffed tiger delivered to her so she could gift it to Kristin along with this story.
Pictured is Kristin with her tiger, a thank you that touched her deeply. She will treasure him and defend him from young Findley....also pictured.. who was rather hoping it was going to be for her.
Jackie said “ I wanted to give her something to say how much I appreciated ALL she was doing and to really wish her well….what was I going to do …perfume.?”
We have two morals to this tiger tale. Make sure you know where that sentimental item is. The thing you love so much you don’t’ want to keep it in the go bag..but you kinda feel ‘you can’t leave without.’ Also, it can be tough thinking of how to thank your fairy partner, especially when you are sheltering in place and for many in our community, don’t have the assets to say it with diamonds. While a thank you isn’t necessary of course - often a meaningful, personal gesture, note or idea means far more than spending money. Good Fairy is always happy to help.

Three Squeaky Clean Fairies
When shutdown restrictions were lifted, and cleaners were able to clean again, Good Fairy Penny could not have been more excited to encounter Brad Pitt on her doorstep when her clean team returned.
Like many Marin households, her family had continued to pay these guys throughout the shutdown. As they caught up on news via Penny’s fluent use of Google translate lol ..Penny mentioned her work founding Good Fairy.
A few days later, team lead Wilfredo texted to ask if they could repay her kindness by offering to clean the home of someone Good Fairy was supporting, free of charge. We selected Good Fairy Martha who is a low income senior also coping with disabilities. Like many folks in Marin, she has been struggling to find affordable care giver help that would extend to cleaning and organizing. And this isn’t a service even Good Fairy can offer. Her home was mounting problem that was overwhelming and upsetting for her.
A team of three went to work on Martha’s home for a couple of hours, singing, laughing, astoundingly thorough and fast in their work as always and chatting away to her in Spanish. here are two of the cleaning ladies Wilfredo’s wife, Vilma, and her sister Miriam. They left Martha to marvel at her neat, organized living room and bedroom, spotless kitchen and her particular joy … squeaky clean windows. At the door she realize Wilfred had even thoroughly raked her yard and driveway.
As they departed, perhaps most importantly, they left her glowing with the sense it had all been their pleasure.
Contact penny@goodfairy.org if you need a recommendation for a pretty special clean team.
In the picture, left is Miriam (sister to Vilma), right is Wilfredo's wife, Vilma (masks removed for photo)

Bike Donation Fairies
A True Fairy Tale: The Cycling Fairies. Good Fairy Keri wondered if a senior in our community might have a small storage space for rent. Ideally in a flat area not to far from her home town. A nice little earner for the senior and a handy spot to keep Keri's mountain bike. She also mentioned she had a older road bike for sale.
With a bit of pixie dust, Fairyland had soon found the perfect storage spot, attractively priced at FREE from a super kind senior ....in exchange the road bike was gratefully donated to Good Fairy.
Good Fairy Hamish ( pictured with halo glowing) put a new wheel and chain on Keri's road bike. He is looking a little dazed as he is recovering from what we in the Fairyland trade call an ' I believe in fairies' moment having discovered he happened to have a spare wheel in the garage that he'd bought and forgotten to return when it wasn't used in a previous project. And it was an exact fit.
Hamish added two kids mountain bikes he had in his garage, and we contacted our friends at Marin City to discuss a donation. Good Fairy Jahmeer from Marin City Collaboration Teams immediately selected local folks who would really appreciate them.
We shared this news with the Good Fairy community on Nextdoor and asked for helmets and bike locks. Good Fairy Colleen was especially kind, producing three new bike locks! and we love that helmet offers came in from Novato, Kentfield, Tiburon, Mill Valley, San Anselmo and San Geronimo...a real community effort.
Then - knowing it was a huge ask ..we approached the Good Fairies at Sunshine Bikes in Fairfax asking them to give the bikes a free tune up. They were INCREDIBLY BUSY. And agreed, warning us it may take over a week to get to them. Two days later, they were done! The only Good Fairy donation money spent on this project was a box of chocolate eclairs for the Sunshine Fairies. Please thank them when you are in the shop! https://www.sunshinebicycle.com/
As always, kindness and enthusiasm beamed back at us from Marin City, and Good Fairy Jahmeer actually drove all the way to Novato and collected stones for Project Love Bug in his pick up truck and delivered them to San Anselmo before picking up the bikes :0). At which point another bike had magically appeared for Marin City, complete with helmet, donated by a family who were painting for the Love Bug Project.
And Good Fairy Hamish wandered back into his magic garage and emerged with a spare bike lock.
And for the ULTIMATE fairy tale ending - Swirl in Mill Valley kindly gifted vouchers, inviting the bikes' new owners to celebrate with a lovely jaunt, cycling along the bike path from Marin City to Mill Valley to pop in for a treat. Please consider that you too may deserve a hit of fro-yo or handmade ice cream and thank Mill Valley Swirl for being such Good Fairies. https://millvalleyswirl.com/
Let us know if you have a bike, scooter or skateboard even to donate? Marin City and many other communities, low income individuals and agencies supporting people experiencing homelessness would love the gift of a bike. It's a gift of freedom, fun, access and encouragement to exercise and of companionship when it enables people to ride together with friends and family. Imagine the thousands of bikes sitting unused for years in garages across Marin.

Good Fairy's First Annual International 4th July Zoom Pet Parade
On 4th July we hosted the first annual International Good Fairy 4th July Pet Parade. A chance for everyone to reach out to those alone at home on the holiday ..with a little furry fun.
We invited everyone to grab their pet if they had one and also invited British participants. (Good Fairy being founded by a Northern Irish person). This was a chance for Americans to revel in their freedom and for Brits to see what they'd escaped....especially corn dogs and funnel cakes which were described in graphic detail. We met at noon in California at at 8pm in the UK.
Over the course of an hour we had 15 people. Four from Northern Ireland, two from Yorkshire in England, four from Fairfax, one from San Geronimo Valley and four from Sleepy Hollow.
We had 10 dogs and 4 cats on screen..some were perfectly behaved, some were perfectly behaved while the treats were flowing ( and yes I am looking at you ...Pumpkin and Noodle! ) and several ran away and were chased by people or cameras to be viewed in preferred snoozing spots. And two cats refused to lower themselves to appear at the event.
Good Fairy Deb from Sleepy Hollow who has been sheltering alone with a particularly cute fluffbucket called Barney for the duration, said it was the next best thing to a real hug.
Thank you to all who made it - and many more who loved the idea but had clashes with virtual or real happenings and will join in next time. Happy 4th!
And dagnamit - I was having too much fun and forgot to take a screen shot!
Rainbow bake sale
On a sunny day in June, 2020, a bake sale took place in downtown Fairfax. It was held primarily for Black Lives Matter but also in support of LGBQT awareness and rights. So black - with a rainbow twist.
A stall of baked wares was set out, some rainbow flags were hug on telegraph poles. But as people started to buy goods, a deeply upsetting incident took place. Teenager ( Good Fairy Jasper) who happens to be a gay and transgende, was confronted about his sexuality in a very public, humiliating verbal attack by two adults. It was witnessed by many, recorded on a video that went viral and lead to police prosecution and media attention.
Jasper was far from seeking the spotlight. The support and concern was comforting but he didn't want to invite attention.
Still - rather bravely, encouraged by an outcry of public support, the teen and Mom ( Good Fairy Jennifer) joined others to set up stall once again the next week. The idea was to actually hold the happy and meaningful bake sale event originally planned.
A huge number of goodies were donated from stores and local supporters. All with careful Covid 19 precautions. There were muffins, pies, cornbread, colorful heart shaped decorated sugar cookies, wedges of chocolate roll and crunchy chocolate chip cookies. Sales were fantastic and Jaspers' belief in humanity was in part restored.
After the sale, Jasper and his Mom decided to offer the remaining items to the Good Fairy Community - to be offered for free to all who are sheltering in place. A gift in the spirit of community love for ALL neighbors.
In one afternoon, three Good Fairies, Michelle and Dahlma joining Penny, distributed baked goods to to 21 people. They drove all over Marin from Terra Linda to Mill Valley to San Geronimo Valley. God Fairy Stephanie also commandeered a box of delicious cookies to be taken to the Anchor Out community in Sausalito.
Many goodies went to low income seniors sheltering in place, who don't get to treat themselves too often. One lady was especially overjoyed by cornbread - the one thing she feels like eating during her worst days of cancer treatment. A box of muffins was on its way to a group of people who are homeless, a wedge of pie went to a lady who is terribly lonely and she told us it just meant' the world that people cared. A packet of heart shaped cookies went to a couple celebrating an anniversary. Two seniors were excited to receive items so they could gift them to a neighbor who had been kind to them.
And we also got to gift a few fairies who have been tirelessly working away to support others. A lady with a broken leg who has now given free advice on benefit applications to c 10 people. A man who has now been shopping for three people every week for 11 weeks. An employment lawyer who has given free advice to fairies struggling with related issues during the pandemic. (though he says his wife might not let him eat it!)
When Good Fairy Michelle had completed her deliveries, she discovered Penny had gifted HER a few items. She immediately attempted to share a loaf of cornbread with a neighbor she hadn't reached out to before. That neighbor was gluten free so a friendship was started but the loaf remained intact. She then came across a person who was homeless ...as if it was just meant to be ..and it was snapped up with delight.
In the messages that poured in to Good Fairy's mail box, it was clear the community not only valued the food but also the gift of being able to participate in showing support for Jasper and the sentiments the bake sale represented. A small and delicious way to show support.
"OMG I love you love you love you, Penny and team. This is too sweet, brings me to tears" Deborah
" Got the pie..thanks eversoooo!" Lynne
"Thank you and Jasper for the 'sweet' offer" Kathleen
" So blessed to have my cornbread....I can only imagine how difficult this whole episode was for you ( Jasper) . I hope knowing there are people like myself foursquare behind you and cheering you on sustains you on your journey" Mary
Frekkie's last day
It was our honor to play a small role in supporting Frekkie in her last day. One filled with a trip to visit some goats, a surprising amount of cat treats, and such a lovely long cuddle as she snoozed off over the rainbow.
It was so very tough for the ‘parents’, Susanne and John, Frekkie was their only child, they had cherished her for 18 yrs, loved her all the more during the shutdown as many pet owners have. When it became clear the kindest thing to do would be to have her put to sleep..
They were distraught they couldn’t be there for her at the end. Because of Covid 19, Dr Katie from Fairfax Veterinary Clinic was not allowed to make a house call, and because of their status, it would not have been wise to go into the surgery.
Good Fairy Penny suggested she represent them. Susanne and John felt a crumb of comfort from the idea and Dr Katie was super encouraging. Penny went to the vets never having met Frekkie before and........................
.... fell in love with her on sight. Saying she was representing the owners was no longer just words. She was.
As the vet’s super busy office bustled around them, Dr Katie gave Penny and Frekkie a room to spend time getting to know each other. She then gave Frekkie a relaxing shot and told Penny she could have all the time and cuddling that the world could still offer Frekkie. So when the time came – it was really not noticeable, a gentle drift off from a snoozey cuddle.
But Susanne and John were in bits. : " Thank you Penny. You truly are an angel. My heart is just still empty my tears aren’t stopping. She was my best friend. Now it’s just the two of us. Both sad "
A few days later it was Susanne and John’s 32nd wedding anniversary. They weren’t doing too well. Even the goats had left their area.
Good Fairy Katie received a call from Fairyland. She was asked to take pictures Susanne had posted online as her favorites of Frekkie and have them printed for her as she doesn’t have a printer. Katie got those pictures printed, added a gorgeous picture of the goats !!! and had them framed before dropping them off as an anniversary gift from the Good Fairy Community.
Susanne: "It’s so beautiful. And framed too. We cannot thank u enough. And love that goat pic"
Penny: "That was allll Good Fairy Kathy. She did us all proud!!"
Susanne: "Yes she did."
Bayside MLK, Jr. Academy 8th Grade Graduation
Good Fairy partners with Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy in Marin City to throw a graduation parade
In June, 2020, Principal David Finnane posted a request on Nextdoor asking if people in Marin could bring their convertible cars to this school to give the kids in this area of affordable housing a really fun graduation send off. He needed about 30 cars for kids and staff. He got three.
Good Fairy asked to support the event to use the fairy community to find more cars. We also used fairy generosity to line the parade route with 100 helium balloons in school colors, made masks for the students in school colors, secured memento keychains saying ' Now the adventure begins' and most importantly, secured two stuffed black panthers to parade with the school ( the school mascot).
On June 10, 2020 we had a magical day.
Good Fairies Rachel and Penny met Principal David Finnane at Bayside Martin Luther King, Jr. Academy in Marin City. Rachel tackled unraveling ribbons from 100 black and gold balloons while David and Penny sat down with a list of nearly 30 convertible cars and a list of 13 graduates and many staff. Each car had been offered to this team from people all over Marin...we decided to believe in fairies and assumed they would all turn up and allocated people to cars. It was a tight fit even with all the cars. Rachel and Penny distributed the balloons over a one-mile parade route and eyed the eerily-quiet road a little nervously...and then…as if by magic, a long line of cars rolled in! It was an extraordinary experience. So many people went the extra mile to help make this a memorable day for the graduates and their community.
When S-I-P senior Good Fairy Golda volunteered her convertible, we asked if someone might wash and clean it for her to be ready for the day. Hilariously, Good Fairy Haley volunteered her fiancé Kevin...the things a man will do for love! They are to be married in July and Golda has now offered them her car to borrow for a romantic date before the big day.
Some car owners knew Principal Finnane or our fairy team; others literally responded to a leaflet left on their car or a knock on the door from a stranger saying ‘Nice convertible you have there..’ Some people who could not be there on the day were kind enough to loan their cars and trust school staff and our fairies to borrow and replace them. And how lovely of those people to dash across Marin picking up cars. One dropped everything to do so having been asked just asked to do so late the night before. Good Fairy Anthony was asked how come he had got involved and said ‘ I was just sitting by my car outside my house and this woman drove up and asked me if I’d like to be a fairy". Clearly, that is not an everyday occurrence and a request that is to be taken seriously.
In the end, there was an astonishing line of 27 cars. Special kudos to Good Fairy Joan who tackled some extraordinary traffic to make it and Good Fairy Tim who had one car blow up en route. Did he give up? NOOOO! He preserved and drafted in Mrs. Good Fairy Tim who sped along with her MG to save the day.
The parade was a hoot, lead by a fire truck bearing a stuffed black panther, the school mascot. A colorful trail of waving hands and signs was accompanied by sirens and horns and music. And there was a great turn out of cheering local folks. The atmosphere was fantastic! It was an honor and a joy to celebrate this day with a vibrant range of young people and to see such a great community of parents and teachers cheering them on. An exciting life ahead of them and the most caring, enthusiastic, inspiring Principal you could hope for behind them.
When Good Fairy Penny collected the balloons back up at the end of the day, she shouted over fences to see if any young kids wanted balloons and there were several takers. Then -- in yet another satisfying little Good Fairy moment -- a little voice replied saying ‘no kids ….but he was trying to hold a birthday party for his sister and could he have one for her’?. So Good Fairy Penny emptied the back of her car and flooded the garden with about 50 balloons.
That night, when she returned home she found an enthusiastic email from Good Fairy Frank offering his Firebird. When told the event was over, he replied "I’m so sad"...so we know that Frank gets to lead the parade next year! Many of the conversations and connections made in those cars will continue...
Thank you to Good Fairy Finnane for letting us share this day and community with you and to all those who contributed by helping to fund helium balloons, panther stuffed animals, masks in school colors and memento key chains for the kids; special thanks to Good Fairies Courtney and Cynthia. And a little shout out to Good Fairy Sophie -- our talented high school team member -- who worked her wings off organizing the event and then had to miss the day as she had an online math class!
The Chicken Fairy
The Chicken Fairy : When Good Fairy Deb ordered and paid for 1lb of chicken from Costco, 3lbs arrived. She thoughtfully called us to find a good home for the extra. Fairyland was just pondering this when Good Fairy Alyssa reached out for support. She left a long voicemail that melted our hearts. She was just 28 yrs old, battling depression and two days in to setting up home by herself for the first time with a baby and a 9 yr old. She had got herself onto Calfresh to buy groceries couldn't access them, she had no car, it was a walk to shops and …someone had stolen her stroller. Good Fairy arranged a team of fairies to help Alyssa the next day - but that night ..they were hungry. So we asked if she'd like some chicken. The gift of chicken was a bizarre joy, not just the food itself but the neighborly love and support behind it. Good Fairy Caroline dashed from San Anselmo to Corte Madera, picked up the chicken and brought it to Alyssa. Deb then called Alyssa and introduced herself as her Chicken Fairy, saying from now on when she shops she will accidentally buy too much chicken and the fairies will wing it to her.
We went on to discover Alyssa was coping without many household essentials and we launch a 'Fairy Wishes' project to help her. She immediately borrowed a sewing machine and started making masks for us.
Chino The Howling Cat
Meet 15 yr old Chino. A handsome chap. One of those super friendly, 'always up for a cuddle' great character cats.
His family senior Good Fairies Kristine and Michael from Terra Linda loved him so. But made the brave decision to ask Good Fairy to find him a new forever home. Very sadly, Michael had fallen ill and his condition included suffering from acute extreme anxiety. Not only were they unable to give Chino the attention and cuddling he had become accustomed to, his passion for opening and closing cupboards for fun a quirk of howling had started to trigger panic attacks, creating an unhappy situation for all.
Kristine said: ' he is the best and he deserves the best'. Chino would be happier elsewhere. However, no matter how gorgeous he was - it was going to be tough to find a new home for an older cat, there were already some medical issues that needed to be clarified, tests were suggested and a few shots were due. And the owners were upset they could not cover the cost.
Because of Covid 19 no animals shelters were accepting surrendered animals that had a home, people were asked to wait until after the shutdown ..but the home situation was a pressure cooker - we'd have to find a private adoption.
Thanks to the generosity of Marin Humane Society and The Good Fairies at Fairfax Veterinary Clinic, Chino was eventually offered for adoption with all his shots up to date and a thorough clarification of his medical status at no charge to Good Fairy or the owners.
We also started a little Go Fund Me to raise money to give Chino a "golden paw shake" , a little funding to increase the chance of a new family opening their hearts to an older cat, by helping with future expenses. We raised nearly $500. With 18 people contributing.
Finally the Good Fairies in the Krause family of San Anselmo went along to meet him and fell in love with him, after a brief trail they agreed to adopt him . He will also be accompanied by a small, rather distressed stuffed penguin his family has treasured since he arrived with it.
Good Fairy Anne baked a comfort pie for the previous owners and a thank you pie for Fairfax Veterinary Clinic. We have advised four other families on re-homing in the current situation with the knowledge gained in helping Chino.
The little girl in the Krause family is reported to spend ' every waking moment' with Chino as well as sleeping curled up with him and she adores him. She has always wanted a really cuddling cat. And Chino does love a cuddle.
The Gardening Fairies
Not long after the Covid-19 shutdown began, Good Fairy had an interesting suggestion from a senior sheltering in place in Fairfax. Fairy Julie was growing seedlings and wondered if we might share them with high risk individuals sheltering in place. She produced a little chart of the seedlings in action: tomatoes, chard, lettuce and various herbs and flowers. We watched them grow and started asking people if they'd like a few when they were ready. To our happy surprise, the idea captivated so many people and the interest greatly outweighed the original number of plants. Because of this, the Good Fairy Team decided to expand the project.
We approached Fairy Michelle Leopold, who owns a chain of Ace Hardware stores including Merridale Ace in Terra Linda. She immediately partnered with us to provide more plants and equipment for the project. In addition, the Good Fairies at West Marin Compost provided and delivered premium potting soil free of charge and Fairy Julia kindly loaned us some land with access to water to store and maintain the plants and soil. Lastly, a Good Fairy gave us a generous donation and was delighted for us to spend it on this new and blossoming program. With all this new found help we had the ability to purchase more plants (especially strawberries), sturdy grow bags and pots for the program. We couldn’t wait to spread the joy of gardening to more Good Fairy seniors.
At this point we launched a really robust gardening team, originally organized by Lagunitas college student Fairy Ronan and Veronica with consultation from our original gardening expert, Fairy Julie. To continue with the joyous cross-generation collaboration we had started, Fairland turned to its own community to recruit a team of 6 seniors to do some generous outreach on behalf of the Good Fairy Community. In conjunction, Ronan turned to local schools and colleges to recruit a team of 16 high schoolers to pot and deliver the plants. Now three months later, the robust gardening team consists of four local high school and college students including Fairy Ronan of Lagunitas, Fairy Zoe of Fairfax, Fairy Annabelle of San Anselmo, and Fairy Juan of San Anselmo.
This is what the gardening team offers . . .
We offer the delivery of a wide range of vegetable, fruit, flower or herb plants to folks’ houses. Our team can plant your plants in your garden for you or simply supply you with the extra soil and tools you need for you to do it yourself if that is preferred. We also offer the option of potting your plants for folks who do not have a garden and might be more restricted in movement and would like their plants indoors or on a deck. After hearing the needs of many people in the community, we have added the serve of one-time or regular gardening support such as mowing or weeding to ensure that seniors can continue the cultivation of a garden.
A number of the seniors we have connected with were only able to accept a few herb plants to keep indoors, but we had many lively chats about how fun it would be to add fresh herbs to Meals on Wheels food. In addition, we had two cancer patients who desired specific herbs as their flavors were some of the only things they could stomach on bad days.
Over the last weeks of June and first week of July, our team delivered hundreds of plants to individuals and care homes all over Marin. We brought such joy to so many people there were tears in Fairyland over some of the comments. What is it that is so special about the gift of a plant? The chance to care for something. The chance to see it grow and progress under your care. The great pleasure in picking a fresh fruit or vegetable or herb to eat. We can't put a green finger on it - but there is something very special about plants.
When one rather depressed gentleman heard the offer he was overwhelmed and said, "I could have a tomato plant . . . of my own . . . oh my" and then he laughed and said "oh my” again. This chap happened to be our very oldest fairy and amazingly at 99 years young he is still living independently. In talking to our team he explained he really wanted a grow box for vegetables fitted onto his deck and of course we couldn’t resist making this into a special project.
We approached Fairy Wes who makes gorgeous grow boxes professionally and he very kindly agreed to make one for free if we supplied the materials. Fairy Deb agreed to foot that bill. After a team effort with Jeff from the Good Fairy leadership team coordinating and Ronan's team bringing along more soil and plants, we now have the finest little grow box in Marin growing vegetables to sustain one of our all time favorite fairies into his 100th year and beyond.
Some of the people we reached out to were in residential homes for seniors and for adults with learning difficulties.
One senior living facility in Novato, home to 70 seniors, accepted a grand variety of 35 plants (including vegetable, fruit, herb, and flower plants). The enrichment director was delighted at the reception they got when the plants were distributed. Many residents greatly miss time spent in nature with the shutdown and an indoor plant helped fill that longing. They now have a little indoor garden and some residents have formed a little gardening team to care for it. They are looking forward to constructing tomato cages and to harvest!
Perhaps our most touching story to date is a home for adults with learning disabilities in Mill Valley. The five residents aged between 40 and 56 each received a tomato plant with their name on it and a little tomato challenge book which asks them to measure, draw and name the plant as well as draw themselves with the plant. The competition is fierce to see who will have the first red tomato to harvest! Good Fairy has also arranged for each person to have a weekly companionship call to chat about life in general and their tomato plant’s progress.
As July continues, more plants are distributed each weekend and the team is engaged on various larger gardening projects including partnerships with local food banks that are allowing for the plants to be part of their distribution schedule. As the seasons shift we are starting to think about distributing different plants and encouraging crafts such as making painted rock labels for your gardens!
Festive Fairy Tales
We asked if folks had a story they would like to share behind a winter holiday ornament or tradition.
The stories were disturbing, hilarious and deeply touching. Read them here
The ‘ I was 11 once’ Project
In April 2020, single Mom of 5, Good Fairy Janet, from Fairfax Park was looking for ways to celebrate her son Zachary's eleventh birthday. Medical issues/shutdown had left her little time to make arrangements. She loved the idea of 11 Good Fairies phoning to wish him Happy Birthday.....an idea we had about 8pm the night before.
Incredibly, we did it thank you Good Fairies Jim, Barbara, Leigh, Scruffy and Martha, Kristine, Maren and family, Lynn, Phyllis ( who sang!!) , Sarah, Flash and Renee. The latter being none other than the Mayor of Fairfax!! Some ice cream appeared as if by magic and Good Fairy Cecilia is treating them to pizza tomorrow and a few fairies are following their chat with a card or other reminder of there conversation.....the party continues.
We'll there's one little guy and one very grateful Mom who definitely believe in fairies. As phone calls were being made fairies were reporting that the whole family was clustered around the phone laughing away. In turn the family was telling Good Fairy they couldn't believe the rich array of characters. Such a fun project an sweetly named after a comment by Good Fairy Adriana who said ' I was 11 once'. Of course all Good Fairies were ....one of them 86 yrs ago.
