County funded in home care giving - getting approved. Aged and Adult Services is a program within IHSS who can consider your case and will decide what tasks you need help with and how many hours you are eligible for. Best place to start is their new screen in service, click here Live Long Live Well - you can enter information for yourself or others.
Covia’s Front Porch/Home Match services – could a house share be a good option for you, maybe you need a little help and want someone else around but don't need personal care giving? For some the solution may be to offer a room in their home with low rent in exchange for support - or you could move into a room in someone's home. Good Fairy Sheila Womack heads up the Marin arm of Covia’s incredible non-profit outreach program. They can partner those with a house to share with those seeking housing and arrange for other in home services such as friendly calls. Like Good Fairy – everything they do is free of charge and they focus on attention to people as individuals, matching personalities/financial bandwith/ task offerings etc. Everyone in the program is background checked and arrangements are monitored on an ongoing basis to ensure everyone is happy. Some people don't qualify for county funded caregiver support as their income or assets are too high. There are three options to consider;
Private hire. Here is how to access a list of registered Marin Caregivers, these people are background checked and have received training,
Apply for an HCBA waiver. This is for those who now find their income is not sufficient to cover the amount of care they would need to hire privately in order to stay in their own home. If you or a loved one are at risk of residential skilled nursing care but would prefer to be cared for at home, you can apply for a home and community based waiver ...an HCBA waiver. The money can be used to pay a family member supporting the patient or outsourced help. In Marin, unlike all but 6 other counties in CA, you have to apply directly to the STATE for this. For details contact hotline 916-554-9214 and see details on the DHCS website . You need to be on Medi-Cal before applying.
If you don't qualify for Medi-Cal or have a very high premium your Dr can help you qualify for special eligibility due to the extent of your care needs. Details are here
Golden Gate Regional Center of Marin - these people can help clarify if you or a loved one are eligible for an extra level of services and support in Marin due to a sufficient developmental diagnosis. This is any disability that relates to intellectual challenges
Hiring - if you are eligible for funded caregiving, social services will generally give you about 5 names of approved caregivers and it's up to you to contact them, find one who is available and a good match. Once hired you need to document their hours to report back to IHSS but they pay them directly.
Access - a concierge service to help individuals with mental health challenges to navigate services
Need more names to find your hire? To get a list of pre screened Marin Caregivers registered by the public authority click here . The difference between being prepared and being FAIRY prepared for disaster is twofold. It means you are PROACTIVE in being aware of county resources and advice and have a plan and the resources you need in place to cope with disaster such as fire, earthquake, flood, zombie apocalypse etc. Secondly it means being proactive in ensuring your neighbors have done so too. And if they haven't help them to get there. This doesn't mean you necessarily need to BE the solution during disaster for them, rather you need to point them to the resources that can help them and encourage, facilitate, bully, bribe, remind or cajole them to get there. Don't let fear of how they will react or fear that they will expect too much of you to once stop you having that conversation. Your knowledge and encouragement can save lives.

OUTSIDE CHECKLIST
These steps should be taken well in advance of the fire when possible:
Gather up flammable items from the exterior of the house and bring them inside (e.g., patio furniture, children's toys, door mats, etc.) or place them in your pool.
Turn off propane tanks.
Don't leave sprinklers on or water running - they can waste critical water pressure best reserved for firefighters.
Leave exterior lights on.
Back your car into the driveway. Shut doors and roll up windows.
Have a ladder available. Leave it where firefighters can find it easily.
Patrol your property and extinguish all small fires until you leave.
Seal attic and ground vents with pre-cut plywood or commercial seals if time permits.
Place pets in carriers.
INSIDE CHECKLIST
Shut all windows and doors, leaving them unlocked.
Remove flammable window shades and curtains and close metal shutters.
Remove lightweight curtains, close blinds and shutters.
Move flammable furniture to the center of the room, away from windows and doors.
Shut off gas at the meter if you have time. Turn off pilot lights.
Leave your lights on so firefighters can see your house under smoky conditions.
Shut off the air conditioning.
