Unsure how to adapt current assignments to a more "Google" format?
Here are some ideas from my year teaching High School English & Publications.
BRAINSTORM & WRITE
Take a writing prompt, embed a Drawing for brainstorming and then write! A Doc does not have to be words only - Insert graphics, original drawings, etc for greater opportunity to show understanding.
QUESTION FORMULA
This adaptation of Manful's 21 Question Formula is a color coded chart for students to develop questions BEFORE the interview, the instructor to double check those questions and then for students to record answers DURING the interview. All in one convenient, adaptable place!
OUTLINE
Send students the scaffold of an outline and your instructions for editing to guide further creation & show understanding. Be sure to select "Make a Copy for Each Student" in Classroom.
PEER EDITING
Glows & Grows tables allow students to record what they liked and didn't like about a classmates work with an eye for capitalizing on what was good and improving what could be better. This Doc makes a student articulate their thinking and allows both teacher and partner to see the process and improve!
YA LIT
These four resources offer students a choice of places to look for information and create their own meaning before a course of study. You've narrowed the possibilities down to four that are acceptable to you and then allowed them to choose what to look at.
STUDENT LED DISCUSSION
Instead of a face to face large group book discussion, try using Slides for a student led discussion where every student manages their slide and contributes to a specified number of class mate slides. Directions on Slide 2 of the deck. Watch students who would not normally speak up in class find their voice in Slides!
DIGITAL JOURNAL
Stop carrying paper journals! With Slides (and Slides Carnival) create the topics for the week/month/unit and each student can express themselves online. Insert video clips for students to watch and comment on, insert Drawing Graphic Organizers, use emojis and lists to connect.
Bonus points if you use a Rubric to grade! #gamechanger
DIAGRAM
Use Slides "Insert --> Diagram" feature to create custom diagrams in a variety of categories for stand alone or integrated use with other Google applications. Choose from a variety of categories and color schemes and make your information visual. Take that diagram and insert it into reports, larger presentations, and portfolios.
COMBINE QUESTION TYPES
Use a Form to rate, define, reflect and comment on a section or entire work. Taken from "worksheets" and canned vocabulary activities, let a Form do the work for you and grade what can be graded while you spend you time on constructed responses.
Start with a Sheet and turn it into all the Charts and Illustrations you need. Customize information, type of chart, colors, fonts, layouts and have the chart you need for the document or presentation that life throws at you. Show students how to visualize information and make sense of charts and graphs because they've created the document for understanding!
OUTLINE
Wait! This is a Doc. What is it doing in Keep samples? Easy. This began as a simple phrase outline in Google Keep where students picked out the major headings and vocab, organized them, added an appropriate image from a simple Google Search. Then, viola! It became a Doc where they formatted by my instructions and attached it to the assignment in Google Classroom.
It shows understanding of the content and the technology while insisting on originality and offering personalization.
SIGN
Real Life Application: Use pdf editors to sign official documents and send on for approval. Students filling out applications and college intent letters, as well as adults.
HIGHLIGHT
Use color coded highlighting to help students pick out patterns, respond, and select "Golden Lines" in passages. Compare & contrast selections, use as springboard for discussions.
ANNOTATE
Scan a handout and enable students to digitally question and interact with the text. No more loose papers, everything at the fingertips of the users.
