With students quarantined in the Fall 2021 and otherwise out of our buildings for periods of time, how do we get them the instruction they need? How do we answer questions and provide real time feedback? Google Classroom allows for written directions and both public and private comments but there's no substitution for a conversation. When we can't be face to face, setting up office hours (with Meet links) through Google Calendar is the next best thing. Here are suggested steps in the process from creating the calendar to the event to the invite to the actual Meet.
The Situation: You need to provide feedback, instructions, & interaction to students who cannot be physically in class but you don't want to stream the entire class. One option: Office Hours. Create a calendar just for offering (and tracking) those office hours and getting students to the Meet designed for access to you!
Inside that calendar, create the event you need. Set days and time, use "recurring" feature to simplify the process. Activate the Meet link as needed. Add your agenda or link, ask questions, state the purpose for your guests.
Save the event you've created and invite your guests. Be sure to look at options for those guests - Can they see who else is invited? Can they invite someone else?
See what the student sees. In their Inbox, an invite from you through Calendar with options to respond Yes, No, or Maybe to one of all of the events. Here's where to join the Meet at the appointed time. When they accept your invite, it goes on their calendar and yours.
When it's time for your Office Hours Meet, navigate to the appointment in Calendar, click on the Meet and instruct as needed. Review of basic Meet controls & features.
