Positionality Statement

Genesis Bernabel, a new student teacher at Worcester Technical High School, brings a unique perspective shaped by her upbringing in the Worcester neighborhood and her own educational journey within the school. As a Caribbean native, she easily connects with her predominantly Hispanic students. Her fluency in Spanish serves as a valuable asset, enabling her to offer additional support to individuals facing challenges with the English language. She aspires to establish similar connections with students from other racial backgrounds, aiming to enhance her understanding of their unique cultures. Having recently graduated from the same school, Genesis possesses an understanding of the students' position and can empathize with their experiences. She is grateful to have a faculty who offers her guidance in navigating responsibilities and her new role.

Genesis, currently a third-year engineering student at a nearby college, shares a similar public educational background with her high school students. However, her newer advanced studies in complex physics topics present a unique challenge when it comes to simplifying concepts for optimal student comprehension. To enhance her teaching skills and address this challenge, Genesis is enrolled in a teaching program that offers a supportive community of fellow student teachers. Within this program, regular discussions delve into the vital roles of teachers and emphasize the significance of social-emotional learning, providing valuable insights for Genesis's teaching journey.
