Candidate Assessment of Performance

The Massachusetts Candidate Assessment of Performance (CAP) is a performance assessment that evaluates the skills and abilities of teacher candidates seeking initial licensure as teachers in the state of Massachusetts. It is part of the Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure (MTEL) program. CAP assesses a student teacher’s abilities to plan, teach, and assess student learning effectively.

Student teachers are assessed through a variety of observations conducted by their Program Supervisor, who ensures that teacher candidates make satisfactory progress toward demonstrating the seven CAP elements in their teaching. While two of these observations are announced, another two are unannounced. These observations, coupled with student feedback and regular meetings with your supervising practitioner, ensure that you are making progress.
