Safe Learning Environment

Proficient Descriptor

Uses rituals, routines, and appropriate responses that create and maintain a safe physical and intellectual environment where students take academic risks and most behaviors that interfere with learning are prevented.

Why is it Important?

Establishing a safe learning environment is essential for a productive classroom. However, this environment doesn't just happen on its own, it must be intentionally created. Even the most well-designed lesson plans will fall short in an unsafe classroom. Building this environment requires getting to know your students and using that understanding to shape your classroom management strategies.

Effective classroom management is crucial when teaching a sizable group of students. This was a key aspect I concentrated on during my student teaching. Regularly observing other classrooms led by experienced educators provided valuable insights into establishing rituals and routines to foster this environment.

My Progress

I utilized the DESE Model Feedback Form to gauge my progress in fostering a safe learning environment. I had my students complete the standard version of the form, where they shared their opinions on the classroom's physical and intellectual environment. Many students expressed that they felt the classroom environment incorporated the components necessary to contribute to this essential CAP element. Additionally, making frequent visits to educators whose classes exemplify proper classroom management helped me establish rituals and routines for my teaching. These reflections were documented in my teaching journal entries.
