The number one thing a student can do to succeed in music is to maintain good attendance. Students who are frequently absent will fall behind and therefore have a hard time catching up. Band is very much a team activity and the absence of even a single player can have serious negative effects to the rehearsal. The absence of a single instrument would be the equivalent to your pitcher not arriving in baseball or your goalie not arriving in hockey. Please review the following absence policy below.
In the case a band practice falls during the same time as a sports practice or other extracurricular, the student is expected to split their time half and half.
Students must let the teacher know about any planned absences in advance.
Please have a look at what constitutes a valid absence below.
Illness - If a student is genuinely ill and away from school they will be excused from extracurriculars as well. Please try and notify us be email prior to the start of rehearsal if this is the case.
Game - It is important to maintain your commitments to other endeavours. A game trumps a practice.
Specialist Appointment - We understand that specialist appointments are booked far in advance. Please provide notice far in advance to your teacher.
Field Trip - If an academic field trip conflicts with a rehearsal, please provide as much advance notice as possible.
Assignment Due in a Class - Part of life is learning to organize your time. One of the best things about being involved in music is the sense of commitment it grows. Students are given notice for tests and assignments days in advance (please refer to SCDSB Administrative Procedures Memorandum A 8015 for the board-wide homework policy) and should therefore plan ahead knowing that they made a commitment to their peers in band.
Social Obligation - Members should schedule social events outside of rehearsal time.
Appointment - Please try and schedule any appointments that you have control over (eg. hairdresser) at a time that does not conflict with your commitment.
