Silver AT NATIONALS!

We are beyond proud of our Concert Band!

The progress that these students have made over the course of this year has been nothing short of exceptional!

After three long years of pandemic related barriers, we were overjoyed that we could finally return to music making!

Getting to Nationals has been an amazing journey. Our band is a young one. 10 of our 26 musicians are grade nine student who just started playing. 9 of our student are in grade ten and have less than two years of playing. The commitment that these musicians have demonstrated to get to this level has been awe inspiring.

After years of no festivals, we were beyond thrilled to when our hard work getting to the Provincial Band Festival paid off with a gold standing and an invitation to Musicfest Nationals. Not only did we decide to take on the challenge of attending, we also took the unusual step of moving up an entire level based on the outstanding commitment of our team!

Last night, we presented a challenging program on the National stage and received a SILVER medal. In addition, we received an "Excellence in Clinic" award for the outstanding growth mindset exhibited by our students during their adjudication. This award really speaks to the character of our students; both as musicians and humans.

As we make our way back home from Niagara, we cannot help but reflect on how easy this group was to travel with! Various people that we encountered throughout the trip have remarked how polite our students were.

As this whirlwind experience comes to an end, we would like to thank the community for supporting our SIX fundraisers. We would also like to acknowledge our guest clinicians Mark Caswell, David Lum, and Rita Arendz for sharing their musical expertise with our students and helping them sound so good! Above all else, thank you to our senior students for their mentorship of our younger students and teaching them what it means to be GBDSS music students.

Go Band!!!!!

Spotlight On: Our Journey to Nationals

After receiving a Gold at the Ontario Provincial Band Festival in Scarborough in February our Concert Band has qualified to advance to Musicfest Nationals!

This is the second time that GBDSS Music students will compete at the national finals, with the Concert Band performing at the Nationals in Ottawa in 2019.

This year's Nationals will be held in Niagara Falls in May. Since qualifying, staff, students, parents and community members have been working tirelessly to raise money to offset costs to students so that all of our musicians are able to participate.

Huge thanks to everyone who has supported us so far! Follow us on social media for more information about upcoming fundraising opportunities. Also, if anyone would like to contribute to our fundraising efforts, donations can be made via SchoolCash Online at the link below.

An Unforgettable Experience

We can't wait to welcome you into our dynamic and thriving music community! We take great pride in providing an exceptional musical experience for all students at GBDSS by providing top-notch instruction, incredible experiences for students, and an unparalleled line-up of extracurricular opportunities.

The beating heart of our program is the incredible community of students that learn and grow from each other while making music. Our room is always a busy hub that allows students from different backgrounds to connect and share their love of music. During their time in the music program, students not only develop music skills, they become incredible team-players, citizens, and enjoy an active role in the school and North Simcoe communities.

Make new friends, travel and perform, create lifelong memories.
