Cutting-Back on Alcohol Use
(even if just a little bit)
Cutting Down on Alcohol Use: Start with Small Steps
If you're looking to cut back on alcohol, try one of the free apps available to track your drink-free days. You can pledge to be alcohol-free for hours, days, or even weeks, and set goals to reduce your alcohol consumption gradually. Whether you’re aiming to drink less or simply drink beverages with lower alcohol content, setting goals is a step toward better health.
Start by setting SMART goals (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound). For example, if you normally drink a beer or a shot, try skipping one of those sips and instead drink a glass of water. Over time, these small changes will add up, helping you feel better physically, socially, and mentally.
If you're struggling with heavy drinking and feel unwell when you try to cut back, remember, it's okay to take it one step at a time. On the days you usually drink, commit to having water first. Drink a full glass or bottle of water before having that drink. This will not only help with hydration but also make you feel good about reaching a goal.
The next time you drink, try not to exceed the number of drinks you had the day before. Or, set a goal to drink less. Each time you skip a sip or drink a glass of water, you're taking steps toward better health, reducing feelings of depression, irritability, and increasing your energy levels.
If you're considering additional support, outpatient treatment programs offer a range of services, from therapy to medication management. These programs can help with withdrawal, addiction, and health concerns without requiring you to be away from work, school, or your commitments.

What can we do to Improve our Mental Health?
Exercise Regularly = balance between strengthening exercises, balance movement exercises, cardio exercises, stretching, and walking.
Get the Right Amount of Sleep = research allows us to sleep between 6 and 8 hours. Try not to sleep more or less as this can influence memory and cognitive challenges, and lots of other health challenges.
Go out in Nature around plants, trees, flowers, water, and in the sun, snow, after the rain, at sunrise and at sunset.
Nurture and promote Social Health by getting in contact and managing friendships and family relationships, as well as with professionals such as our Case and Care Managers, Peer Supports, Counselors, Advocates, and Care Teams to name a few. Plus build and maintain Community Networks and Engagement in our Community.
Redirect Negative Thinking = These skills can be learned in Counseling such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Group Therapies, and One on One Therapies.
Eat Fruits, Veggies, Grains, and all of the Nutritious Food Groups. Get the Vitamins we need to survive, thrive, boost energy, and feel nourished every day and night.
