You've heard the name, you've probably done some research, and you're still left wondering just what you're in for as you start Foreign Service Orientation. We have highlighted some key elements and dates below for your planning purposes.
The Orientation Division is committed to maintaining the highest standards for orientation, and we require 100% participation. These first six weeks of your Foreign Service career lay the groundwork to understand the Department’s structure, mission, policies, and values and aim to set you up for professional and personal success.
Class sessions are in person. There will be some asynchronous online courses to complete and self-study materials available for reference. Please inform us if you need any accommodations to enable your participation. Sessions will be held either at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center or the main State Department building in Foggy Bottom.
A professional appearance is an important part of working at the Department of State even in a virtual environment. The standard for the Department of State is generally "business formal."
Please note: We ask that you adhere to a "business formal" dress code for class sessions as shown in photo, unless otherwise noted.
You will be onboarded in-person from Washington D.C. We have set aside the first week of the orientation course (April 6 - 10) to ensure you have online access and have been properly in-processed.
Monday, April 6: In person swearing-in and in-processing day
The Office of Talent Acquisition (PERT/TAC), in the Bureau of Personnel and Training (PERT), formerly the Bureau of Human Resources Office of Recruitment, Examination and Employment (HR/REE) will inform you separately how to report to the National Foreign Affairs Training Center for your swearing-in and to complete any entry-on-duty paperwork.
Tuesday and Wednesday, April 7 and 8: Department badging and network access appointments
You will receive information about your badging appointment the week before class starts. At your appointment time, please report to State Annex 09 to apply for your credentials and activate the badge for entry into Department facilities and to access Department IT systems.
Friday, May 8: Flag Day
Flag Day is the day you find out where you're headed! You will have the opportunity to invite a limited number of guests to attend.
Friday, May 15: Ceremonial Swearing-in
Last day of orientation. You will have the opportunity to invite a limited number of guests to attend.
Due to the intensive nature of the orientation program and the 100% participation policy in place at the National Foreign Affairs Training Center, annual leave (time off) during the course is generally not authorized, with the exception of mandated court appearances and medical or family emergencies as approved by Orientation staff. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please direct them to FSOrientation@state.gov.
Now, you might be wondering what comes after Foreign Service Orientation. You will learn more about next steps after Orientation during meetings with your Career Development Officer (CDO). You will receive your follow-on training schedule following Flag Day.
