In each Orientation class we ask class members to self-assess their foreign language abilities. Some of us come in with minimal or no foreign language ability, some come in already fluent, and others somewhere in between. Regardless of where you fall, do not worry! Language ability is just one element that goes into your bidding strategy and the assignment process. This self-assessment is the beginning of that process.
Note: ALL class members need to complete the language assessment questions in the Pre-Orientation Survey, regardless of your foreign language abilities.
As of October 1, 2022, NFATC no longer assesses proficiency at the 4+ or 5 level. All scores of 4 or above are reported as AP (Advanced Proficiency) to the examinee and recorded as such in the Student Information System and in employee profiles. This change has been made because 4 is the highest score required for Department of State purposes. You can learn more about how the Department assesses language abilities here.
