Softwood, by far the most used timber in the construction industry comes in standard sizes, in the UK, this slide set sets out current standards

To use timber joists, you need to select the correct size for the span, TRADA have produced a series of tables to enable you to specify the correct size. They are available for purchase, from the TRADA web site or if your a student, they might well be available from your library.
