The picture above is the first photo I ever took of/with Typhoon, and it was my Facebook profile picture for a while. However, my love affair with this flavor started about a year prior.
I first tasted Typhoon while on vacation with my friend Hayden and his family, during DEWmocracy 2010. (I still remember the exact 7-11 that I bought it from!) Hayden and I are both Dew-obsessed, so Typhoon absolutely blew our minds. We bought several more bottles during the course of that trip, and I grew to love it not only for the delicious and unique flavor, but also for all the fond memories made, spending summertime at the beach with a great soda and a great friend.
During the summer of 2011, when Typhoon made its first return, I was determined to acquire more, but there was a small snag: This time, it was a Walmart exclusive, and there were no Walmarts near me. However, I was not about to let that minor detail keep me away from my favorite Dew, so I went looking anyway, and managed to find some bottles for sale at a local Mediterranean restaurant, of all places. One of those bottles is the one shown in the photo at the top of this page. I bought all that they had, and didn't realize until I brought them home that they were actually left over from the initial release, and thus had expired about a year ago. I drank every single bottle anyway.
The next eleven years were a rough time for me as a Mountain Dew fan. Though there were several more amazing flavors released during that time, none of them captured my heart or my taste buds in quite the way that Typhoon had. The Typhoon Freeze available at Taco Bell during 2013 and 2014 satisfied my cravings a bit, but it still wasn't exactly the same, especially since I couldn't keep a stock of the Freezes at home to drink at my leisure.
Finally, after over a decade of pining for it, I received a spark of hope in the fall of 2021. Someone on the Mountain Dew subreddit had posted a picture of an updated can design for Typhoon, with the source being directly from Pepsi's website. Rumors swirled around the Internet for months, until finally, in the summer of 2022, my most beloved flavor was released again, this time as a Dew Store exclusive.
Typhoon was the third Dew Store exclusive flavor, and I knew that the previous two, Cake Smash and Flamin' Hot, had sold out the same day that they were released, so I was well prepared this time. I signed up for Dew HQ a few days in advance, and showed up to work early that morning so I could place my order on my work computer. My shift started at 9:30 a.m. and Typhoon was dropping at exactly 9 a.m., so I figured it'd be better to do it at work than to do it at home and risk showing up late for my job. My supervisor was very supportive of this plan, counting down the minutes until 9 a.m. with me and cheering me on as I went through the ordering process.
There was a limit of two cases per order, so I placed my first order for two. To my surprise, there was still availability after I submitted my order, so I submitted another order for two more cases, and then another two cases after that. I was tempted to keep going, but at that point I had spent around $100, including shipping and everything, so I forced myself to stop.

(Yes, even Buddy joined in on the Typhoon excitement!)
My darling. My beloved. I have missed you with all of my heart, all of my soul, and of course… all of my taste buds!
Folks, allow me to introduce you to Mountain Dew Typhoon.
This is the one. My all-time favorite Dew flavor ever. Out of all the flavors that have been released over the years, this is the one that has consistently remained at the top of my list.
The last time Typhoon was available was in 2011. I have been pining for the stuff ever since, so when I heard that it was being released again, this time as a limited online exclusive, I JUMPED on it. I made sure that I was logged into the Dew Store at the exact moment it dropped so I could get my hands on it before it all sold out. (The previous limited online exclusive flavors sold out almost immediately. Thanks bots and scalpers.)
Receiving these packages today was better than Christmas morning. Eleven years I’ve waited for this day. ELEVEN YEARS! I swear it almost tastes better than I remember, although I’m not sure if that’s because of the anticipation or because this is the first time I’ve drank it out of a can instead of a bottle.
Anyway, I just wanted to share my joy with all of you. 🥰
About a month later, I received an email from Mountain Dew asking me to fill out a survey. Most of the questions were about the recent Typhoon release, so I was eager to fill it out, mostly just so I could scream at them to make it a permanent flavor. One of the survey questions asked if I had bought any more Typhoon in the past month, and when I responded no, the following question asked why not. I typed in the truth: That I thought it was sold out, but if it was still available, I would 100% buy more.
As soon as I was done with the survey, I immediately went to the Dew Store, and sure enough, the option to buy Typhoon was still there. I couldn't believe it! I thought for sure it would have sold out the first day just like the other online exclusives! The limit had now been increased to six cases per order, so I placed an order for six cases.
A few weeks after that, I received another email from Mountain Dew, this time offering me a promo code. The email also mentioned that Typhoon would no longer be available the following week, so I decided to place one more order for six more cases while I still had the chance. (I had already spent quite a lot on Typhoon at this point, so the promo code was very much appreciated!)
As of May 2024, after a 14-year reign as my favorite flavor, Typhoon has been unseated by Baja Point Break Punch (which, in my opinion, basically tastes like Typhoon mixed with Baja Blast). However, I still love Typhoon deeply, and everything else I have said about it still stands.
