The Fridge and Other Merch

A Trip to Pepsi's Birthplace

In addition to Mountain Dew, I am also a huge fan of Chuck Taylor Converse. Needless to say, it was only a matter of time before I combined the two.

For those who are unaware, the Converse website has a generator where you can design and purchase your own custom pair of shoes. My mother and I have a tradition with this generator that we've been doing since 2011: Every year, I design a pair of Converse and send the link to my mom, who then buys them and gives them to me as a Christmas present. Below is the pair that I created for Christmas 2016.

They also look amazing under a blacklight!

This particular design required a lot more patience on my part than most of the shoes I had created prior. The colors and patterns that are available on the generator periodically rotate, and it just so happened that, for several years, the lime green color was not an option right before Christmastime. I had seen the color during some "off season" brainstorming sessions and knew that it was perfect for a Dew-themed pair, but I had to wait quite a while before the timing finally lined up right. Fortunately, it was very much worth the wait!

2020 was a dark time for us all, especially during the holidays when we couldn't celebrate in the ways that we were used to. Halloween is my favorite holiday, and whether I was trick-or-treating as a child or partying as an adult, I have always loved putting together fun, creative costumes. For Halloween 2020, however, I wasn't planning on going out for any festivities due to the pandemic, and I was hesitant to put my normal amount of effort into a costume that hardly anyone would even see.

I decided to compromise by making a costume that was still fun and creative, but also very simplistic: I made myself into a can of Mountain Dew!

I already owned the t-shirt, and the soda can tab was made out of aluminum foil. I attached the tab by cutting the string off of a party hat, taping the string to the tab, and then stretching the string around my head.

Despite the minimal amount of time put into it, I received lots of compliments on that outfit from the small group of friends we invited over and those who saw the photo on social media!

When I was in high school, several of my closest friends were also obsessed with Mountain Dew. Whenever we would hang out together at one of our houses, we always made sure that there was ample supply available. Given enough time and enough people, we would often end up with a lot of empty cans afterwards, and we sometimes decided to create art with those cans before throwing them out.

Above are a couple examples of the type of structures we would assemble together. None of us were Michelangelo, of course, but we sure had a blast doing it!
