Module 1
Background and Context: This Module consists of my clothing unit plan, and an activity to introduce students to the topic of clothing. It was developed for novice, middle school learners, and will take place during the second semester of German 1. Students already have basic knowledge of the German language and culture upon beginning the unit. Goals for level 1 students include learning to use the German language in everyday situations, and engaging with meaningful issues going on in the world around them. Both of those goals are met in this unit. Clothing is a topic common to level one, and this unit seeks to give the traditional clothing unit deeper meaning, as students explore the reasons that people wear the clothing they do, and social justice issues related to the fashion industry.

Introduction to Cultural Context
Below are the slides from the Pear Deck that I created to introduce students to this clothing unit. In the Pear Deck, students respond to questions, and discuss the factors that determine what kinds of clothing people like and wear, and the role of clothing in our everyday lives. Two infographics are used, showing H&M as a top brand, which is a great entry point for our later discussions on Fast Fashion, and it's harmful effects on the environment and workers in the textile industry, as H&M is a leading offender.

- I can answer questions about my favorite clothing brands and trends.
- I can answer questions about the factors that determine what types of clothing, and what clothing stores, we like.
- I can answer questions about the factors that determine what we actually wear, and where we actually shop.
ACTFL Standards
- Interpretive Communication: Learners understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.
- Students will achieve this by interpreting and analyzing infographics on clothing brands in Germany.
- Cultural Comparisons: Learners use the language to investigate, explain, and reflect on the concept of culture through comparisons of the cultures studied and their own.
- Students will achieve this by comparing where people shop in Germany vs. where people shop in the US.
ISTE Standards
- 1c Students use technology to seek feedback that informs and improves their practice and to demonstrate their learning in a variety of ways.
