Module 4

Background and Context: This module is the summative assessment for my Food Unit, which was developed for novice learners. Food is a topic common to level one, and this unit seeks to give the traditional food unit context and authenticity. This module is conducted in the middle of the school year. Students therefore have a basic foundation of language skills and vocabulary upon beginning the unit. This module takes place at the end of the unit. In this module, students will synthesize all that they have learned throughout the unit, demonstrating their learning through the tasks outlined below.

SWBAT:

• Identify foods in German
• Interpret and evaluate restaurant reviews and menus
• Compare restaurant menus to their own food preferences
• Discuss with a partner where they want to eat. Explain why
• Choose a restaurant to eat at
• Create a review of their favorite restaurant for the target community in which they:
  • describe the restaurant
  • tell the price range, opening hours, and types of food that can be found there
  • discuss their favorite meal

ACTFL:

Interpretive Communication: Learners understand, interpret, and analyze what is heard, read, or viewed on a variety of topics.

• In this module, students interpret and analyze menus from German restaurants, as well as written and video restaurant reviews. Students will complete an EdPuzzle and Socrative quiz to guide them in interpreting the reviews, and Google Forms comprehension guides as they analyze the menus.

Interpersonal Communication: Learners interact and negotiate meaning in spoken, signed, or written conversations to share information, reactions, feelings, and opinions.

• In this module, students use a back channel to discuss which restaurant they would rather eat at. In doing so, students will share where they prefer to eat, why, what types of foods are available, what they prefer to eat, prices, nutritional value, and their opinions of the restaurants.

Presentational Communication: Learners present information, concepts, and ideas to inform, explain, persuade, and narrate on a variety of topics using appropriate media and adapting to various audiences of listeners, readers, or viewers.

• In this module, learner's will create a Google Sites, blog-based review of their favorite restaurant in their own town. The review will be shared with native speakers who are moving to Los Angeles. Students will share a link to the restaurant's website, prices, opening hours, and photos of the restaurant and food. Students will persuade others to eat at the restaurant by telling why they like it , what the atmosphere is like, and describing the food offered.

Communities: Learners use the language both within and beyond the classroom to interact and collaborate in their community and the globalized world.

• In this module, students create reviews of local restaurants to help Germans who are moving to our community. The reviews are shared via Google Sites' blogs with the local German community, and students in our classroom.

SAMR

Substitution: Students read menus and restaurant reviews, and also watch reviews, online. Students complete questions about the menus and reviews via EdPuzzle, Socrative, and Google Forms. Students use a back channel to discuss which restaurant they would like to eat at.

Augmentation: Students write restaurant reviews that are posted to their blog, and the classroom blog, and then shared with target language speakers in the local community. As an extension activity, students can comment on each other's blogs.
