Plan, Practice, and Leave an Itinerary

For instance, the troop may develop plans along the following lines -

  • NATURAL OR ARTIFICIAL ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS - Upon arriving at the camp site, have an announced and an unannounced fire drill. Include such things as: stay with buddy; move to centralized meeting point outside the camping site; contact the local emergency personnel (fire, police, and ambulance squad); have an adult be the last to exit to ensure stragglers are on their way to the meeting point. Additionally, during a fire situation, tie hair back and tighten loose clothing to keep them from catching on fire; keep towel, shoes and flashlight within easy reach during night; and report uncontrolled fires to adults immediately, do not attempt to put it out!

  • LOST CAMPER - buddies stay together; designate people to make a quick search of entire camping areas; investigate what the lost camper was last wearing; what she was doing; how she was feeling (sick, homesick, angry, etc.). If not quickly located, notify local officials and the OCC. The OCC will notify USAGSO.

  • INTRUDERS - HUMAN OR ANIMAL - Stay with buddy; report stranger and funny noises to leader; make noise, use your flashlight and stay with people; move toward well-lighted areas and toward adults with the troop. Contact local officials as merited.

  • POLITICAL UNREST - POTENTIAL FOR VIOLENCE - Check with American military or embassy personnel before departing! If the trip is allowed, carry embassy and military point-of-contact telephone numbers. Follow directions as provided by the military or embassy for travel while in another country.

  • If an emergency arises, stay calm and follow your plan.

  • Remember to refer all questions from media to the OCC who will connect with USAGSO.
