There are many places to sleep and be protected from the elements when camping. Where exactly your troop will sleep is up to them. If progression is being followed, girls will spend their first troop overnight inside at the Girl Scout meeting place or the home of one of the girl’s. It is recommended that the second overnight outing take place in a rustic building (one without all the comforts of home) located in the seclusion of nature. The girls are probably ready for their next overnight in the backyard using tents and by the fourth overnight, are ready to move the tents to the local campground or other available camping area. It is possible to leap directly to tents in the backyard depending on the girls [and the adults] comfort levels and sense of adventure. Finding out how many girls do extensive camping with their families and how many have slept away from home and their families will help you determine if girls can take the fast track to tent camping or the slower path.
