There are two types of gear needed for camping: troop gear and individual camper gear. Gear refers to the equipment, supplies, and clothing used while camping and doing other outdoor activities. Look up the specific activity under “Safety Activity Checkpoints.” There is also a very complete listing of the equipment needed for overnight trips in the appendix of Outdoor Education in Girl Scouting. Make a copy of this list for the troop’s camping trip and give the personal equipment listing to each girl. The equipment taken and the clothing worn can be the difference between a highly successful outing and a total flop!
If something is to be left behind, let it be sandals and not the rain coat. Encourage girls to bring play clothes that can get dirty and even stained. Outdoor activities, particularly camping are magnets to every dirt ball floating through the air!
