The timeline is partly speculative, gathering information from official sources and even implications. Smaller events (like the Bite or Springlock failures) will not be recorded to make the timeline less cluttered. Keep in mind that the timeline as it as it currently stands is shaky and vague. Due to Scott's lack of communication with later games on when certain events happen, this timeline is not 100% accurate. Either way, this should give you an idea on how the events in the game transpired.
Any points marked with "*" is speculation on this writer's part that is not backed by official sources. May potentially be biased.
Any entries with "#" is an event that may not be placed in the correct order.
Any words that are underlined are hyperlinks, this will direct you to other pages to reference where these points came from.
Note: The only years that are ever mentioned or established in the game canon or in multiple sources are 1982, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1988, 1993, and 2023.
Of note, the year "1986" is mentioned on the Sodaroni item, but this doesn't seem to have relevance on the timeline itself.
In 1982, Fredbear's Family Diner is open to the public. This is the very start of the timeline, introducing the titular character of Fredbear.
According to The Silver Eyes, Fredbear's was formed by Henry Emily and William Afton. The Freddy Files mentions that Fredbear's Family Diner was late spun off other locations, leading to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza and possibly Circus Baby's Pizza World.
This "numerous locations" theme was expanded upon in Fazbear Frights, as there are numerous Freddy Fazbear Pizza locations. What's interesting is that not all of them follow the same theme and had the same tragic background. In "Fetch", one pizzeria where the titular character was found is near an ocean and had aquatic characters. In "The New Kid", an abandoned pizzeria was found deep in the woods, and "Into The Pit" showed that Jeff's Pizza was originally a Freddy Fazbear location, which so happens to be the same location where the murders happened. "Gumdrop Angel" took place at Freddy's, but the characters were not haunted or malicious.
This means that not every single location that uses the same animatronics are cursed with hauntings. While something tragic can happen like with "Gumdrop Angel", it doesn't always tie to possession.
Starting in 1983, a year after the opening of Fredbear's Family Diner, Freddy Fazbear's Pizza opens to the public.
According to "Fredbear & Friends" easter egg FNaF 4, Fredbear was originally the main star alongside with Freddy and the rest of his gang. It's not clear if Freddy and the rest of the crew were made in 1983, or before that point.
This year is backed up further in Help Wanted where the collectable tokens have "since 1983" written on them.
During a brief test run at Circus Baby's Pizza World before the grand opening, Elizabeth Afton sneaks inside the building when William wasn't watching. She was unfortunately the only one present when she met Circus Baby, causing the animatronic to act out on William's programming and killing her.
This incident was apparently covered up that the grand opening was cancelled due to "gas leaks". This led to the Funtimes being rented out for private parties instead of being present at a single pizzeria.
William Afton murders Charlotte outside of *Fredbear's Family Diner*. Before this, Charlotte reached the exit of the pizzeria, despite the Puppet being programmed to stop her. The other kids placed presents over the Puppet's prize box and locked Charlotte out of the building. This inadvertently led to William killing her.
The Puppet went outside, but the rain caused it to wither and collapse next to Charlotte's corpse, allowing her to possess the animatronic.
The Crying Child is dreading his birthday party, and it tormented by his older brother and the other kids. On the day of the party, the Crying Child's brother and his friends pull a prank on him, which backfired and resulted in the "Bite of '83".
The Crying Child dies after the Fredbear Plush said that he'll "put him back together".
It's presumed that Fredbear's Family Diner has been shut down following this incident, as this location was referenced in FNaF 2, where Phone Guy said it's "closed for years".
Has to happen during, before or after FNaF 1.
The Animatronic Encylcopedia states that we play as The Crying Child at this part of the game, though this throws a wrench on when the gameplay happens in the timeline. It's never stated if it took place in a dream, though this is unlikely as not only the location in 4 is shown to be real, but said book says that he needs to fend off the Nightmare animatronics in his bedroom.
This may imply that the gameplay happened first, as The Crying Child has not been bitten at this point in the story.
Two years after the Bite of '83 and the death of the Crying Child, William Afton killed more children at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, which was apparently at the "withered" location. This is dubbed by fans to be the "Missing Children's Incident".
This incident is said in both The Silver Eyes and Into the Pit to occur in 1985, which is why it is placed after the FNaF 4 cutscenes. The Fazbear Frights story "Sergio's Lucky Day" also mentions 1985, though it says nothing about the murders.
Before the gameplay of FNaF 2 happens, five more children were killed at the new Freddy Fazbear's Pizza location. William in this game was implied to be the previous night guard before Jeremy, and was moved to the day shift after complaints. William soon went missing and donned a yellow suit (probably Golden Freddy), killing more kids and presumably letting them possess the new Toy animatronics.
Occurred in 1987.
This location ran for two weeks until it was closed for "malfunctions with the new animatronics". The Withered animatronics were still kept and may have been rebranded at a later point.
1993
Phone Guy was killed during his shift before the events of the game.
After a seemingly closed down FNaF 1 location, William enters the pizzeria to dismantle the animatronics. This continued until one of the souls torments William, leading him to jump into the Spring Bonnie suit in the backroom. The springlocks in the suit goes off, trapping William and killing him. William would not be seen again until the events of FNaF 3, where he would be found thirty years later after his death.
The timing of SL's gameplay is not made clear, as there is no stated year. Considering that Michael said that he is going to find William, this implies that Michael has no idea of his whereabouts or lost contact with him. *SL's gameplay may have happened after William's death and when the FNaF 1 location was closed down.*
2023
After the events of FNaF 3, Fazbears Fright burns down due to faulty wiring. Dark Springtrap is seen walking out of the location after Michael's speech on wanting to find his missing father, leading to the events of FFPS.
Henry, wanting to put an end to Freddy Fazbear's Pizza and the tragedies that occurred for many years, devises a plan to gather the remaining animatronics into Freddy Fazbear's Pizza Palace and burn them all down. Scrap Baby, Afton (Scraptrap), Molten Freddy and Lefty were all rounded up and destroyed, along with the protagonist and Henry himself.
It's believed that Michael is the protagonist like in SL, though this is not confirmed, it's possible as he has not appeared in any future games since.
Despite Fazbear Entertainment going under and the souls are freed, the spirit of Golden Freddy is not willing to move on and torments William Afton in his nightmares.
Though this didn't put down William for good as later games shows that he still came back, like he always does. In The Ultimate Guide, it was revealed that "Cassette Man's (Henry's) plans did not work as intended", meaning that FFPS was not the end.
Fazbear Entertainment comes back in attempt to regain public trust and to expand their business into other mediums. This includes virtual reality games, animatronic companion services and a megaplex mall.
From this point forward, all the events in the timeline will be placed at the end.
