The abridged version of the lore in the games. Theories and smaller lore detail are not included.
You play as a man named Mike Schmidt who takes a week long job at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Guided by a former night guard named "Phone Guy", Mike completes his shift.Â
The backstory goes that five children were murdered at Freddy's, where a man dressed up in a mascot costume lured them to the back room. The killer was captured and fined, but the bodies were never found. A while after the incident, customers complained that there is blood and mucus seeping out from the eyes of mouths of the animatronics, which caused them to get investigated for sanitation concerns. Freddy's was trying to search for a buyer since these reports, but couldn't find one and was shut down later that year.
The year this game took place is not made clear. Some the estimation of the wage Mike was paid, people concluded that it happened in 1993. This year is presumably backed up in others sources, most notably FFPS which highlighted the year "2023", which if you subtract by 30 (the time skip from FNaF 3) gives you 1993. This is also backed up in the unused Faz-Facts in AR, where it mentions that the "Twisted Pizza" was voted to be the "most yummy" in every survey from 1988 (the year after FNaF 2) to 1993 (the year FNaF 1 took place and the same year it closed down).
You play as a man named Jeremy Fitzgerald who takes a week long job at the new and improved Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, and later Fritz Smith on Night 7. Once again guided by"Phone Guy", both employees ended their shift.
The lore in this game isn't found in the "hallucinations" this time, but is found in both Phone Guy's dialogue and the hidden minigames that can happen randomly when the player gets killed.
The backstory goes that way before the murders that happened at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza, there is a child who was murdered at what appears to be Fredbear's Family Diner. Said child possesses the Puppet, which is backed up and explored in FFPS.
Fast forward to the five murders mentioned in FNaF 1, and you learn that the Puppet is the reason why the animatronics are haunted.
When Freddy's re-opened despite all the safety precautions, the killer mentioned in the first game strikes again and kills five more kids, that may have possessed the Toy animatronics. The new and improved Freddy's shuts down two weeks after it opened.
Unlike in the first game, the year that FNaF 2 took place is highlighted - 1987.
What's worth noting is that in the Custom Night, you play as a man named Fritz Smith, who was fired on the first day of the job for "tampering with the animatronics and odor". The mention of the year 1987, which is where the Bite took place according to Phone Guy. This lead to the belief that Jeremy was the victim. In the official guide books however, it says that Jeremy was successfully moved to the dayshift after Fritz took over, meaning that Jeremy wasn't injured after Night 6.
Thirty years after FNaF , the new owners are planning to open a new attraction at an amusement park called "Fazbear's Fright". They plan to go to all the available Freddy's locations to find props for the attraction, but they only one one functional animatronic on the second day of the testing, which is Springtrap, hidden in the safe room that was boarded up.
Phone Guy (in his last vocal appearance) only exists in the tape recordings heard in the location, which are training tapes found in the same location where Springtrap was found (which is likely the FNaF 1 location as seen in the minigames). The tapes explain the function of "springlock suits", which are animatronics that can be worn as a suit.
Later tapes reveal that after an "unfortunate incident at a sister location involving multiple and simultaneous springlock failures" the company deemed the original suits to be unsafe and are retired. There were mentioned of replacement springlocks to arrive, but it doesn't go any further than that.
Interestingly, the tapes reveal that the MCI happened around this time, as one tape reveals that the non-employees should not be brought to the safe room, and that the Spring Bonnie animatronic was "noticeably moved" despite the company deeming them to not be safe for use. This means that the MCI murders occurred in the safe room, which matches what the clippings said about it in FNaF 1.
The after night minigames reveal that William was Springtrap, as he was killed inside the animatronic suit after the springlocks failed. Fazbear's Fright burns down after the end of Night 6. Unlike the first two games, the protagonist is never revealed outside of speculation. Frights implies that it was Michael Afton.
Due to the year estimate with FNaF 1 wage, some people believe that FNaF 3 took place in 2023. This is seemingly confirmed in FFPS, where one of the recording left by Henry says "HRY223". The Ultimate Guide also backs this up.
This game has some vague lore, but here's the gist.
In the minigames, you play as a young child who is dreading to attend his party at Fredbear's Family Diner. He was tormented by his older brother wearing a mask and was eventually bitten by Fredbear after a prank set up by his brother backfired. He soon dies in the hospital, as you can hear a flatline after the Night 6 cutscene.
In the gameplay though, you can hear Phone Guy's Night 1 Phone Call from FNaF 1, are are able to see an IV Drop, a Pill bottle and flowers next to the bed on occasion. At the end of the game, you find a box, but it cannot to opened as "perhaps some things are best left forgotten, for now." It's hard to talk about the lore in this game because most of the answers come from speculation, but almost nothing is confirmed.
Scott confirmed in a Reddit comment that FNaF 4 occurred in 1983, despite the teasers hinting 1987. It's not clear why this change happened, but considering that Fredbear's was closed as hinted in 2, which took place in 1987, it was quickly changed.
Later games tried to elaborate some details on this story. SL showed that the FNaF 4 locations in the minigames and the house were real, meaning that the gameplay did not take place in a nightmare as commonly believed.
Another theory going around is that you play as Mike, the older brother, not the crying child. The gameplay being similar to FNaF 1, hearing Phone Guy's first call in FNaF 1 as well as many of the comparison between the two games. The Ultimate Guidebook seemingly confirmed the theory that the older brother is Michael Afton, who we later see as playable in SL.
The Tales of the Pizzaplex story "Dittophobia" sheds more light on the game. FNaF 4's gameplay as an experiment set up by William Afton to measure the fear levels by children. He would kidnap miserable kids, drug them with hallucinogenic gas and record their fear levels. The "Nightmare" animatronics are actually state costumed mannequins that are set up on rails, but the gas is what gave them their more scary appearance. These kids who were a part of the experiments eventually got killed.
This information was discovered back when Sisiter Location, in which the Private Room had the Fredbear plush, the "1983" code showing the FNaF 4 location and gas canisters can be found throughout the entire area. The fanbase DID catch on to this at first, but it fell out of popularity in more recent years due to the games and books not following up on this idea.
Supposedly, Scott forgot to put in the information that allured to this idea, which is why no no one found the pieces at the time. The story was completely hidden for that reason. This explains why the reveal SL felt like it came out of nowhere, as nothing hinted about it being an experiment. He had to iterate it in later games until the advent of Dittophobia where it was all spelt out.
You play as Michael Afton (referred to as "Egg Benedict" from HandUnit), who is tasked by his father to "put Elizabeth back together". Elizabeth is the name of William's daughter, who was killed by Baby after slipping in the test opening of Circus Baby's Pizza World. Baby and the Funtimes then merge into Ennard, who escape to the surface after scooping Michael and entering his body. Michael survives after Ennard was ejected, and vows to find William as Springtrap exits Fazbear's Fright.
The timing on what this game takes place is never made clear. Given that Michael said that he is "going to find [his father]" at the final cutscene, this implies that he lost contact with William. The closest thing that counts to William being missing was after he got springlocked at the FNaF 1 location, making him lost for thirty years.
HandUnit mentions that Freddy Fazbear's Pizza closed, but this can refer to the FNaF 1 or 2 location. Though during Michael's only line of speech, you see Fazbear's Fright after the fire, putting that to take place sometime in the future. Thus, it's possible that SL took place after the FNaF 1 location closed, after William Afton died.
This game has a lot of lore packed in, but this will cover the basics.
Before the game was released, there is dialogue on Scottgames and FNaFWorld.com that shows that Baby was ejected from Ennard after the events of SL. This lead to the creation of Scrap Baby and Molten Freddy.
William Afton has survived from the previous game and is heading to the new pizzeria location along with Scrap Baby, Molten Freddy and newcomer Lefty.
Henry (the same person from the Charlie trilogy of books) is introduced and reveals that like in the novel, he worked together with William. Unlike in the book, Henry doesn't die until the end, where he reveals that William has hurt a lot of people, including himself. Henry knew about the murders and the possessions, as one of these victims was his own daughter, who possesses the Puppet and gets captured by Lefty. Henry plans to gather all the remaining animatronics together inside the pizzeria, with the plan to burn them all, himself and the player in a fire.
Additional lore details, most involving William is found in Fruity Maze, Midnight Motorist and Security Puppet minigames. More can be found from Candy Cadet, who tells three separate stories of five things being merged into one upon death.
This is the end of the original FNaF hexalogy. UCN is meant to be a part of the game as an update, but was released as a standalone game.
As insane as the game is on throwing in random characters, there is a small yet confusing story to be discovered.
Even after the events of FFPS, someone is being tormented by an angry spirit, who refused to let them move on and rest. They punished the person by putting them in an office full of characters. This spirit, referred to as "The One You Should Not Have Killed" knows of being burned along with the others to free them, they too remained to let their killer suffer.
One easter egg found in the game shows that Old Man Consequences tells you to "leave the demon to his demons. rest your own soul, there is nothing else". This means that even after there is nothing for the spirit to do, they refused to move on.
It's not clear on who this spirit is or who we play as, but recent sources from Fazbear Frights reveal that the person we play as is William Afton, where the spirit tormenting him was a young boy who possessed Golden Freddy. This is backed up that in the ending for the game, you see Golden Freddy twitching and fading into the darkness.
Withered Chica and Mangle refer to the spirit in the game by using he/him pronouns, giving away that this spirit is a male. However, they have a female sounding voice, which was apparently a red herring according to Scott's Job Listing on this particular character, in which "the gender should not be made immediately clear, it can work as either a young boy or young girl". This caused a lot of confusion among newer fans who didn't see these listings, as they are now removed from Voices.com.
From this point forward, all the games are moving forward in the timeline, thus they will barely cover anything else from the past.
Fazbear Entertainment somehow rose from the ashes and are planning to discredit all the "crazy rumours" that hurt their image. To do this, they hired a game company called "Silver Parasol Games" to make a VR game called "The Freddy Fazbear Virtual Experience". These games are mainly recreations of the original titles, with some new games thrown into the mix. The purpose of the game is to discredit the rumours made by a "rogue indie developer" who made games based on the stories at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Those same games that hurt the image of Fazbear Entertainment.
However, as Tape Girl found out, Fazbear Entertainment lied. As discovered in the emails in one of the hard drives sent to them, Fazbear Entertainment hired the "rogue indie developer" and commissioned them to make games to highlight the events that happened at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. The purpose of these games was to expose themselves to the public, and then discredit the rogue developer for "slandering them" and to prove their innocence and regain their good name. "It was an elaborate coverup- a campaign to discredit everything", as put by Tape Girl.
Around this time, something is emerging. After Fazbear Entertainment sent SPG hard drives and circuit boards to quickly make the new VR game, Jeremy noticed that an entity got into the game and started appearing. This entity is Glitchtrap, whom is apparently William Afton reincarnated and trapped in the game.
Glitchtrap made several attempts to contact Jeremy during beta testing, but this slowly drove Jeremy to insanity. Jeremy tried to warn the others, but they refused to listen and later planned to discredit him for "seeing too much". Jeremy then sliced off his own face, causing a lawsuit that led to another unnamed developer take over to finish the project. It's not known if Jeremy died from this.
Tape Girl, taking over Jeremy's job as a beta tester investigated and found Glitchtrap. She later found a way to remove Glitchtrap and then hid the logs for the intent of the next tester to find them and get the message to not release the game. Later she found that Glitchtrap hid in the tapes. Tape Girl chose to break them apart to prevent Glitchtrap from doing any real harm. However, the player assembles Glitchtrap back together and soon trap him in a plushie. The DLC reveals that the player is someone who goes by "Reluctant Follower", who apparently brought back Glitchtrap on purpose and hid him so that no one will ever know. This character is later revealed to be Vanessa, who is mentioned in Special Delivery and stars as a security guard and antagonist in Security Breach.
Special Delivery doesn't really have a story in of itself. The only story to be found was in the emails, which stopped being sent after December of 2020. The remaining emails were then leaked, showing that the game is a gap between the events of Help Wanted and the then upcoming Security Breach. These emails appear to be connected to the Retro CD's found in Security Breach, further hinting that even the scrapped emails are canon to the lore.
Vanessa, who is working for the service tricked the people who were struggling to get rid of a virus (presumably Glitchtrap) to access to the companies credentials. This lead to the virus being isolated instead of removed, it then locked everyone out, except for Vanessa, who still has complete access. Then fabric materials for making a costume showed up, which is ordered by Vanessa herself. A virus email would then be sent to the player from "_pizzaplex", which according to the Retro CD's, was the same "dangerous message broadcast" that was mentioned by the therapists that caused most of the Glamrocks to become hostile.
These emails lead up to the events of Security Breach.
Security Breach is up there with FNaF 1 on having very little lore. That doesn't mean the story is easy to explain to break down, because there are far more questions that the story created than answers.
You play as Gregory, a kid who is trapped in the Freddy Fazbear Mega Pizzaplex. Backed up by Freddy - the only animatronic who isn't out to get Gregory, you must survive in the mall until 6 AM and discover the truth of the place.
A lot of the lore is left by the totebags, some cutscenes, the Retro CDs and some of the paths to any of the endings. This the second FNaF game after 3 to have multiple endings, however it's not clear which ending is canon until the advent of RUIN.
If you want to learn more about the story in Security Breach and Ruin, we advise you to look at the character pages or the lore section for the game.
