Of all the animatronics in the series FNaF series, Golden Freddy is one of the most mysterious characters with tons of implications. However, the fandom's interpretations of the character itself seemed to have changed over the years to the point it's hard to find any accurate information without running into confirmation bias. This page will dedicate to these theories and showcasing what is accurate and what's not.
NOTHING IS CONFIRMED ON THIS CHARACTER. THIS IS NOT A FACTS PAGE.
THEORIES ON GOLDEN FREDDY AS AN ANIMATRONIC
Fredbear was one of the original animatronics that starred in his own restaurant called "Fredbear Family Diner". This location is implied in FNaF World, The Freddy Files and other rogue sources be the first of the restaurant chains before Freddy Fazbear's Pizza.
Fredbear was first mentioned in FNaF 2 by Phone Guy on Night 5, where he said that the location is "closed for years". The location itself was apparently seen in 2 itself with the "Give Cake to the Children" minigame. However, Fredbear himself was never seen until FNaF 4, where he strangely looked a lot like Golden Freddy, minus the black hat and bowtie, which were purple.
Some theories to back this up is that after the Bite of '83, Fredbear was never seen again, but Golden Freddy appeared after the timeline in a decommissioned state.
UCN also seemed to have implied in how Fredbear is summoned. By setting Golden Freddy's AI to 1 and buying a Death Coin, Fredbear's hat will appear on the desk. When Golden Freddy appears and the Death Coin is used, Fredbear will attack the player.
Despite popular belief, Golden Freddy disappears when Fredbear's jumpscare is triggered. This could be a technical input by Scott where too many objects in the room would cause the game to lag if a jumpscare is triggered. This is applied to all the characters in the game whenever the player gets attacked.
FNaF 3 first introduced the springlock suits, in which Phone Guy said in the tapes that they "currently have two as of this recording". These tapes in question were found at the original FNaF 1 location, along with Springtrap, the antagonist of the game.
Spring Bonnie is confirmed in the game to be a faulty springlock, which were decommissioned and replaced with the fixed ones. In that same game, there is a minigame where you control Golden Freddy, who is next to Spring Bonnie. This along with the tape is what started the theory that Golden Freddy is a springlock himself.
Fazbear Frights seemed to have backed this up where in "The New Kid", Kelsey mentions that Golden Freddy is a springlock that was scrapped for "being too dangerous to use". As a part of the prank, Kelsey entered inside Golden Freddy, which triggered the springlocks and was seemingly killed. At the end of the story, Devon also triggered Golden Freddy's springlocks. This story suggests that like Spring Bonnie, Golden Freddy is a faulty springlock, which would explain the decommissioned state of the character.
In the official artwork for "The New Kid", this "yellow bear" is shown to be Fredbear, not Golden Freddy. The book never made it clear if it was Golden Freddy or Fredbear, it was instead stated as a "yellow bear".
Shadow Freddy and Golden Freddy could not exist in the same space at the same time.
In FNaF 2, there is a chance you can see Shadow Freddy in the Parts and Services.
THEORIES ON WHO POSSESSES GOLDEN FREDDY
In the first game, five children were killed at Freddy's, and there are five animatronics made present at the time, including Golden Freddy.
FNaF 2 also showed that in "Give Gifts, Give Life", the kid who becomes Golden Freddy appears followed by said jumpscare. "Go! Go! Go!" also showed that five kids were murdered at the FNaF 1 location, as hinted with Foxy's curtain looking similar to the one found in the game.
FNaF 3 showed that the fifth kid was wanting their "Happiest Day", which is gathering the other four souls of the FNaF 1 crew and giving the kid their cake. This leads to the kid donning a light coloured Freddy mask before disappearing with the others.
Cassidy is implied to be the name of the fifth kid who was murdered. The name is said to the seen on the grave in the good FFPS ending, but it was covered up by the grass.
The name "Cassidy" is found in the Survival Logbook. One of the puzzles in the logbook asks you "who are you? What's your name?" in reply to one of the questions "do you remember your name?" The Updated Freddy Files and The Ultimate Guide also suggests that the Logbook does help to solve the name of the tombstone that was covered up, that being Cassidy.
Cassidy is also the name of the main character from one of the scrapped screenplays of the FNaF movie. It was not explained who Cassidy in that movie is, but the film would span across multiple timelines and games, which felt more like an encyclopedia than am movie. While Scott said it might satisfy hardcore fans, it wasn't satisfying to him. This implies that the screenplay would help solve some answers from the games, and may involved Golden Freddy as said character is the most prominent in the game series.
While it's commonly believed that Cassidy is the name of the person who possesses Golden Freddy, the actual identity of Cassidy themselves is not made clear.
In The Fourth Closet, Cassidy is said to be a girl with long black hair. In the graphic novel however, she has light brown hair and sporting a ponytail. However, Michael Brooks possesses Golden Freddy in that continuity. She may have possessed Bonnie instead, as Gabriel is seen in the graphic novel adaptation, whom possesses Freddy.
Another interpretation of Cassidy's design from fans is lifted from the Logbook where there's page of a girl with short black hair and pigtails, receiving a cake from the Puppet. The illustrations of the page in question corresponds with the question "recall your happiest memory from your happiest day". However, this does not 100% match with the description that was seen either iteration of The Fourth Closet. Strangely, the girl looks identical to Mary, a character from the fan game Five Nights at Candy's 3.
Further note, in the game lore, Golden Freddy is said to be possessed by a male (see "Possessed by The One You Should Not Have Killed" below), while having a female voice. This is due to Scott's casting with will be covered in said section. Either Cassidy in the game lore is a male, or it may not be Cassidy after all. The name "Cassidy" is a unisex name, which can apply to either gender.
FNaF 4 showed at the Bite Kid (currently does not have a confirmed name) is close to Fredbear, whom is similar in design to Golden Freddy. At the end of Night 6, the Bite Kid dies as evidenced with a flat line heard in the background, with the promise that the Fredbear plush will "put him back together".
Strangely enough, the layout of Fredbear's Family Diner in the minigames is similar to the "Happiest Day" section, just in reverse. The number of tables, the coloured balloons, the kids wearing masks of the FNaF 1 crew and the screen panning to 3 squares matches up very closely.
FNaF World is where this started to pick up. The first cutscene shows a pair of eyes telling someone "I will put you back together", the same words told to the Bite Kid. The hidden cutscenes show that it was an 8-Bit Fredbear talking, and tells the player that they need to find the clock to "help him find his way".
The clocks in question are all watered down recreations of the hidden FNaF 3 minigames. In 3, playing all of these minigames is required to get the good ending, where you give the Golden Freddy kid their Happiest Day.
After completing the clocks, another cutscene says "we are still your friends. Do you still believe that?", which is also nearly the same words that the Fredbear Plush says at the end of Night 6. This implies that the Fredbear plush is talking about the Bite Kid.
This entire thing implies that the Bite Kid possesses Golden Freddy, which raises questions regarding how the MCI really went down or if it can work at all in the story. If the theory is correct, then the events of the MCI had to be tweaked, which would throw the order of events out of whack. This is an issue, especially since the Puppet was added as another important character in the series of murders, prior to the MCI.
That said, it's possible that the Bite Kid can still possess Golden Freddy and not have it impact the events of MCI. According to the books, the MCI happened in 1985, two years after the Bite of '83. What's also interesting is that Into The Pit showed that there are six victims, but Andrew, who is a parallel of "The One You Should Not Have Killed" was found in a different abandoned pizzeria location from where the MCI happened. This means that Andrew's murder was a completely separate incident from the MCI altogether, thus it's possible that this can fit with the Bite Kid's situation. If the Bite Kid's death was separate from the MCI, then he is not a part of the incident. He still possessed Golden Freddy, but not the same animatronic in the same location.
"The One You Should Not Have Killed" is the main antagonist in Ultimate Custom Night, who was responsible for the player's torment. This spirits face can occasionally be seen in the game, looking like a young boy with blondish hair and blue eyes.
After getting all the cutscenes, you can see a scene with Golden Freddy twitching and fading into the darkness, implying that the soul of Golden Freddy set up the entirety of UCN.
TOYSNHK is commonly mistaken to be a female due the voice being feminine. This is heard in Happy Frog's, Orville's and Nedd Bear's lines. However, Mangle and Withered Chica mention the spirit with male pronouns, meaning that this spirit is a male. This is actually due to Scott's casting choices. In his job listing for his character (which was called "Vengeful Spirit"), this character's voice can be taken by any VA regardless of gender, as the intention was "this character's identity shouldn't be made clear yet, so it can either work as a young boy or young girl". This listing was released before Mangle's and Withered Chica's pitches.
This job listing, the appearance of the character and the pronouns used by Mangle and Withered Chica declines any possibility of "TOYSNHK" being a female.
The gender of "TOYSNHK" and the connection with Golden Freddy was also backed up in Fazbear Frights. In that series of books, Andrew's body is found inside Golden Freddy in "The New Kid", but his soul was tormenting "The Man in Room 1280", which is later revealed to be William Afton. This hints that the person who possessed Golden Freddy is tormenting his killer, hinting that we play as William Afton in UCN in some sort of nightmare after the events of FFPS.
Like with Cassidy, the actual identity of "TOYSNHK" is not made clear. The face of the spirit was actually an edit of one of Scott's kids, a case of him reusing assets from his own photos rather than resorting to stock ones online.
This theory was something that was stemmed from the Survival Logbook and Fazbear Frights, but is one of the more popular ones. This theory entails that the Bite Kid AND the 5th MCI victim (Cassidy) are possessing the same animatronic.
In the Survival Logbook, you can see faded lines asking someone a series of questions. The questions seem to relate to the Bite Kid, while also leaving hints on speakers name. That name being Cassidy. However, another theory is that the Bite Kid is editing the text to respond back to various questions, however, there is no evidence to support this. Due to the vague nature of the Survival Logbook, several theories were made in attempt to explain the purpose of the logbook. One of them being "the faded text is written by a spirit because it's faded".
Fazbear Frights is where it started to gain traction. The Stitchwraith consists of two souls, Jake and Andrew. Jake is the gentle one who sees and controls the Stitchwraith, where Andrew was angry, malicious and is the power source. However, there are several problems with this theory.
While Andrew's body was found inside Golden Freddy, his soul went to William Afton, whom them ended up inside Fetch's battery pack. All this time, William was hitching a ride with Andrew, leaving the connection of three souls inside Golden Freddy instead of two as the theory originally went. Andrew left Golden Freddy a long time ago.
While Jake's story is similar to the Bite Kid's situation, he lacks the fear that said child has. On top of that, the story itself has nothing to do with Freddy's. It's never said that the Bite Kid possessed the Fredbear Plush after his death.
The big issue is that the Stitchwraith's appearance and nature is more akin to Ennard than Golden Freddy. The Stitchwraith, like Ennard has a skeletal body with a white head. They are both also be have multiple hosts in them (Stitchwraith with Jake, Andrew and William. Ennard with Baby and the other Funtimes). Also like Ennard, the Stitchwraith is able to jettison other hosts. In Ennard's case, the other Funtimes ejected Baby. The Stitchwraith ejected Andrew's soul after a struggle with William. These are the things that Golden Freddy can't do that both Ennard and the Stitchwraith can.
This theory in of itself, considering the information from the older games would end up creating a massive retcon. Golden Freddy has always been seen to possessed by one kid in the older games, which continued in FNaF 2, 3 and even FFPS. There was no other spirit seen or involved with Golden Freddy, even in later games.
Despite those plotholes, this is not to say that the theory isn't valid enough, as "Together Forever" features two characters getting killed inside a springlock suit, which can back this up being plausible.
