When building a college list, take a look at the questions above to see how colleges/universities match your academic profile, and how they fit with your personal lifestyle. Finding an academic "match" and a personal "fit" are both very important when deciding where to apply and where to attend college.
It is a good idea to apply to at least 3-5 colleges/universities. A well-rounded list would include 1 reach school, 2-3 target schools, and 1-2 safety schools. You should be happy attending any of the schools you are applying to. Use the worksheet below to make your college list!
Reach school- A reach school is a school in which your academic credentials (GPA, test scores, rank, etc.) may fall below the school's average range. These can also be schools with very low admissions rates. These are sometimes thought of as "dream" schools.
Target school- These are schools in which your academic performance is well-aligned with the academic performance of the average admitted student, where you would be happy to enroll. Applying to a few target schools where you could see yourself having a good experience can set you up for success when it comes to college admissions.
Safety school- A safety school should be a school where you are confident your GPA, class rank, and extracurriculars would make you a comfortable "yes" for their admissions office. A safety school does not mean the school is not academically rigorous or well-ranked, it simply means that you have a very high likelihood of being admitted.
