Ms. Kepley and Ms. Louther will be offering SAT prep during FLY Time on Wednesdays! If you would like some help coming up with strategies and finding resources to study, please sign up and see us!
The ACT and SAT are standardized tests that some admissions offices use as a factor in applications.
The ACT covers English, math, reading, and science reasoning skills and you will receive a composite score between 1-36. All seniors should have had the opportunity to take the ACT during the school day as a junior.
The SAT has two categories: Evidence-Based Reading and Writing, and Math. The SAT is scored from 400-1600.
All UNC System Schools (public colleges/universities in NC) have a testing requirement for students entering in the Fall 2026 semester and beyond:
Students with a weighted High School GPA greater than or equal to 2.50 and less than 2.80 are required to submit a standardized test score of a 17 or higher on the ACT or a 930 or higher on the SAT.
Otherwise, it varies by institution whether or not test scores are required or optional. It is up to you to decide if you would like to submit test scores or not on optional applications. If you need help deciding, come see Ms. Kepley (I won't tell you what to do, but we can look through your options together).
Basically, if you take the SAT or ACT multiple times, an institution may allow you to take the best parts of each test and combine those for your ideal test score.
Here's an example:
Ms. Kepley scored a 930 on the SAT the first time, with a 510 on the Writing/Reading and a 420 on Math
Ms. Kepley took the SAT again and scored a 980, with a 500 on the Writing/Reading and a 480 on Math
If an institution "superscores" then they will take the 510 Writing/Reading from the first test and the 480 Math from the second test for a combined total score of 990!
