Anomaly scan
20-24 weeks
This is a detailed scan performed from 20 to 24 weeks of gestation.
During this scan, we examine every part of the fetus's body, perform accurate biometrics to evaluate its growth, locate the placenta position, assess the amount of amniotic fluid. Special attention is given to the brain, face, spine, heart, stomach, intestine, kidneys and extremities.
In addition, we measure blood flow through the mother's uterine arteries to assess the risk of preeclampsia, hypertension, and intrauterine growth restriction at a later stage of pregnancy. If the mother is at increased risk for the above, monitor of fetal growth and Dopplers at 28, 32 and 36 weeks of pregnancy is recommended.
Furthermore, transvaginal assessment of the cervical length is offered in order estimate the likelihood of preterm birth. If the cervix is less than 25mm in single pregnancy then vaginal progesterone administration is recommended. If it is shorter than 20mm in twin pregnancy then close monitoring is recommended and possibly even cervical cerclage.
If abnormalities or normal variants are identified, the significance of the findings will be discussed and the couple will be given further counselling and options of management.
