Cultural awareness (cultural sensitivity, cross-cultural or intercultural awareness) refers to the awareness of our own cultural identity, values and beliefs and the knowledge and acceptance of other's cultures. On the other hand, cross-cultural communication is the communication between people who have cultural differences due to nationality, age, working style, gender, ethnicity, race, etc. It can be verbal and non-verbal and can include the use of words, gestures, eye contact, or body language when interacting cross-culturally.
These are important nuances. In order for professionals to work effectively across cultures they need both the cultural awareness and the specific cross-cultural communication skills, often specific to country or region, to to build long lasting, successful relationships with others.
