IELTS

IELTS test scores are accepted as proof of English language ability at thousands of universities, colleges and workplaces around the world, and also by the immigration authorities in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK.

IELTS tests for UK Visas and Immigration must be taken in person at an official IELTS test centre. Make sure that the test centre you book with offers IELTS UKVI (Academic), IELTS UKVI (General Training) and IELTS Life Skills testing. UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) requires an additional layer of security when taking IELTS tests.

If you are applying for a Student Visa to study for an undergraduate or postgraduate degree, at a university that is a licensed student sponsor, you must meet the English language level set by the institution. All UK universities and colleges accept IELTS results.

In some countries you have the option of taking the IELTS UKVI (Academic) test online. Check if this option is available when you book your test.

In both the General Training and the Academic tests, the Speaking and Listening sections are the same. However, the Reading and Writing sections of these tests differ. Life Skills is a UK government-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) that assesses only your speaking and listening skills.

If you are planning to study in a country where English is spoken, it's likely that the IELTS Academic test is the right choice for you.The test assesses if you are ready to begin studying in English. It features vocabulary that is familiar within an academic setting. You can also take IELTS Academic for professional registration purposes.

The IELTS General Training test is suitable for those wishing to migrate to a country where English is spoken (Australia, Canada, New Zealand, UK), and for those wishing to train or study at below degree level. IELTS Life Skills

IELTS Life Skills is a UK government-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT) that assesses only your English speaking and listening skills. This is the test to take if you are applying for the following types of UK visa:

• Family visa

• Extension to family, spouse or partner visa

• Indefinite leave to remain or citizenship
