Opening Titles

The Fame opening credits is a rapidly edited montage of clips from the show and close ups of each of the lead actors that was conceived and edited by supervising editor (on season 1) Michael Hoey and NBC executive Michael Levine.

Music editor Boy Mayer was asked to produce a 60 second edit of the theme Song as performed by Erica Gimpel in the pilot episode to accompany the clips and Debbie Allen's infamous "You Want Fame..." speech from the pilot was added.

The titles sequence was nominated for an Emmy award and remained essentially the same throughout all 6 seasons. Cast pictures were updated each season replacing the cast members that had left with the new people joining the show that year.

Most of the clips were directly lifted from the episodes but there was the odd occasion where footage was specifically filmed for the titles.

In the first 4 years the credits were not updated when cast members left part way through a season but this was rectified in Season 5 when Cynthia Gibb & Ken Swofford left and Page Hannah, Carrie Hamilton & Graham Jarvis joined the show, an amended set of credits were used.

In Season 6 the credits were given a totally new update, whilst following the original format all the clips used were new, with the exception of one shot of the School of the Arts entrance, which is the only shot used in all versions of the titles.

With a number of cast changes 5 slightly different versions of the final years credits exist.

In 1985 Loretta Chandler was asked to re-record the theme song to give a new updated version for the credits for the final 2 seasons.

The font used for the actors names and production credits in seasons 1 to 3 is Casad-Serial-ExtraBold Regular. This changes to Columbia Serial Xbold for seasons 4 to 6.
