Shrine & Temple

There are many shrines and temples in Kurume, such as a prestigious shrine with a beautiful night view and a branch temple of Naritasan Shinshoji Temple in Chiba, which has a 62m tall statue of Kannon.

Daihonzan Naritasan Kurume Temple

The height of the Kannon statue is 62 meters (203 ft.). The dot on her forehead is a 30 cm (11.8 in) diameter gold plate studded with 18 three-carat diamonds. The baby she is nursing is 13 meters (about 43 feet) long, the same size as a full-size bus. Climbing the spiral staircase inside the statue, Unzen can be seen in the distance from the observation window in good weather. The "Hell and Paradise Museum" in the basement is also popular.

Kora Taisha Shrine

At a height of 312 meters (1,024 feet), Mt. Kora stands on the westernmost edge of the Mino Mountain Range. On this mountain, you will find Kora Taisha Shrine, a former National Shrine and a major shrine in the Chikugo region.

Bairin-Ji Temple

Located on a hill on the Chikugo riverside, just to the rear of JR Kurume Station, is Bairin-Ji, a majestic-looking temple belonging to the Myoshinji school of Rinzai Zen Buddhism.
Famous for its strict Buddhist training, plum blossoms, and carved wooden relief.

Suitengu Shrine

Kurume's Suitengu shrine, located near the Chikugo River, is the head shrine of all Suitengu shrines in Japan. The god of water and children's guardian deity are worshipped.

Kitano Tenmangu Shrine

There is a legend of Sugawara Michizane and the Kappa, and the "Kappa no Te" (hand of the Kappa) is carefully preserved as a treasure.
Around the time of the vernal equinox (Mar 21) and the autumnal equinox (Sep 23), a mysterious scene can be seen as the setting sun shines straight through the tower gate from the approach to Tenmangu Shrine.
