You are required to sign up for two different types of insurance during your stay in Korea: the Korean National Health Insurance and an additional Insurance of your choice.
All international students who plan to study in Korea will automatically be subscribed to the Korean National Health Insurance once you are registered as "foreigner" (Foreigner Registration). This is mandatory regardless of whether you already have a similar insurance plan from your home country. It is called "insurance", but unlike other private insurance, you don't need to claim for benefits. Simply show your Foreigner Registration Card and the medical bill will mirror the benefits immediately.
Fees: approx. 76,000 KRW (per month) *subject to change
Coverage Period: From the date when you do the Foreigner Registration to the date of departure (mandatory plan)
Benefits: National Health Insurance for foreigners has the same coverage as it does for the Korean citizens. For more information, please visit: Insurance Benefits (National Health Insurance).
How to Subscribe: No action needed (automatically subscribed, mandatory)
How to Pay: The National Health Insurance Service (NHIS) will send the invoice and payment method directly to the address written on your Foreigner Registration Card (FRC).
How to Receive Benefits: You DO NOT need to claim for benefits. Simply show your FRC and the medical bill will mirror the benefits immediately.
Want to be exempted from the National Health Insurance?
Scroll down to slide 9 to find out whether you are eligible to be exempted. You can visit Seoul NHIS Center for Foreign Residents or call 033-811-2000 (multi-language service available, English/Chinese/Vietnamese/Uzbek) for more information.
In addition to the National Health Insurance, students must carry an additional insurance policy.
If you wish to purchase the Group Insurance (Ewha Collective Insurance), please wait for future instructions on our communication channel. If you do not wish to purchase the Collective Insurance, you MUST get an insurance on your own. For those who already purchased the insurance from your home university/country/ISEP, you do not need to purchase another insurance.
Make sure the coverage details are compatible to Ewha collective insurance. Also, the coverage period must cover the entire study abroad period. It is students’ responsibility to compare and check the coverage plans (benefits) of each insurance.
