Background of the laboratory
The Brain Research Institute at Niigata University is one of Japan’s leading centers for brain pathology research. In collaboration with Niigata University Hospital, it promotes advanced, wide-ranging research covering areas from basic science to applied research on brain diseases (for more details on the Brain Research Institute, click here [Link]). The Institute has now embarked on a groundbreaking new research direction as Evolutionary Brain Pathology, answering the question, “How have human brain diseases evolved?”. This novel approach will not only enhance our fundamental understanding of brain disease mechanisms but also can identify genes or other potential targets for disease treatment through the lens of evolutionary biology.
With these objectives, the laboratory was established by Dr. Yoshida in January 2024. Dr. Yoshida have experienced evolutionary genomics across a range of species from nematodes to fish and decided to apply the genomic study to understand the mechanism of "biodiversity" and "disease."
