SUMA MASHE'ASHENA
As the winds become cold and the nights grow longer, the Vesper camp seems to take solace in the companionship formed over these last few years. There is a sense that you stand upon a precipice. Plans discussed and preparations made cannot dispel the lingering uncertainty: Where will the world go from here and will you be there to see it?
Your thoughts naturally drift to the comforting reassurance of your favorite dream, the one that has provided solace even in the darkest times. And yet as inevitable confrontation approaches, the details of your dream start to fade until, in the last few days, you no longer remember your dream at all!
Welcome to SUMA MASHE’ASHENA, the final event of the Evensong Campaign...
Concordance has been in a state of upheaval since the conclusion of the Rite of Izail. The Seven who stood accused have not been seen since that day. The Templars, under the leadership of Seneschal Wilmina Yadre, have declared martial law in the City of Dreams and other large cities and towns around Concordance to maintain order and protect the citizens from such heretics that would go so far as to defile a rite of Izail. Many people seem relieved that the Templars have taken this step to protect them from the rise of a growing Vesper army in the North. Additional news of infiltrating Vesper agents have the citizens of Concordance on edge and forming teams of militia to route out the spies.
The tide of popular opinion that had previously been swinging in favor of the Vespers seems to have turned in the other direction, even once staunch allies now denounce them as heretics who would defile the Dreaming Goddess and Izail.
At dusk, the citizens of Concordance gather in public to sing the Ashensing with far more vigor than they have in recent years. Some even sing it throughout the day, chanting the song like a talisman to protect themselves from their foes. And who can blame them with stories of Vesper spies coming out of every locale except the Northlands. Foreigners and the few people not so consumed with the fear and fervor are viewed suspiciously and sometimes driven out of town by mobs wielding pitchforks and torches before the Templars are able to reassert order.
In the days following the execution of the Spider's contingency, Amalia Troyvich returns briefly to discuss the use of the Lens. She indicates her belief that the pacifying effect that was originally created by the lenses when they were first used in YC 43 has been renewed, even more powerfully. It will likely cause anyone who is not one of the Vespers or Champions, or dwelling with them, to see the Vespers and Champions as enemies, to be avoided and ignored if not attacked on sight.
"But the good news is," she says, cheerfully, "you all have collected the lenses, and we have them now. We can undo this, with enough time and effort and possibly some sort of counter to the musical component--" she pauses, scribbling a long note to herself on a scrap of paper-- "in any case, a total reversal will require significant effort. But it might be possible to create some temporary countermeasures that could be used in a more limited capacity-- on individuals-- if there are certain people you particularly need to, er, not kill you. I think with the help of Mercutio and others who may join him in assisting me, with enough of the right materials, we could craft several of these."
