Event 5: Memento Mori

Event 5 (September 14-16, 2018)

After fleeing the wrath of Inquisitor Prime Marion Sagramor and a host of Templars, accused of Treason and Heresy, the Champions have spent the summer sheltering in a rough, temporary campsite in the Northern Wilds. Other members of the Expedition have rejoined the company over the weeks, but many remain missing. The Champions occasionally see and speak with Vespers, but have not yet encountered more than a handful of the outlaws. But as the year turns towards fall, that will change.

Huge insectoid creatures have been sighted in the woods near the temporary campsite, but there have been no incursions as of yet. Vesper scouts report the presence of unstable ground and several visiting Vespers have complained of twisted ankles and other minor injuries as a result. Some worry that the colony is growing so large, however, that these “Dirtlice” (as the Vespers call them) will soon prove a more deadly danger.

It is time for the Feast of Remembrance, a holiday devoted to honoring the dead, mourning those lost, and-- occasionally-- calling upon their spirits for knowledge and guidance. Presided over by the Favored of Shroudweaver, the mysterious deity responsible for funerals, graves, mourning and the memory of the departed, it is a time when many seek to honor their lost friends and enemies.

Isolated in the wilds, the Champions have heard little of what is going on in the greater world beyond, though some rumors have reached them:

All around Concordance, there are rumors that the forces of nightmare are on the move. Multiple attacks along the northern border by cultists bearing the symbol of a dagger, joined by dark shadowy creatures of nightmare have been documented. Atrocities committed in these attacks are sparking fear in the populace. Some say this is the work of the Champions, who having escaped justice have joined the Vespers and now openly move against Concordance. Treachery runs at the highest level, with the proof that former Templar General Monbaird and Seneschal Morris have joined them.

In a swift move by the Holy Council to turn back this new threat, Seneschal Varek has been promoted to Templar General, and will be working closely with the Inquisition. It is said Inquisitor Sagremor’s testimony to the Council was key in this promotion. The Holy Council has encouraged all true and loyal citizens of Concordance to keep faith and report any suspicious or disloyal activity.

Meanwhile, word is sent to the Champions, just before the Feast, that it is time now for them to join the local Vesper encampment. And so the Champions await a guide, to take them onward to the next chapter of their adventures.
