AUTHENTIC ASSESSMENT:

An authentic assessment for Dressmaking 1 involves having students design and construct a simple garment—such as a skirt, blouse, or shorts—based on basic dressmaking principles. This task allows them to apply key skills like taking measurements, drafting patterns, cutting fabric accurately, sewing with proper techniques, and finishing a wearable piece. They are assessed not only on the quality and fit of the final product, but also on their planning process, time management, attention to detail, and ability to follow safety and sewing protocols. This mirrors real-world dressmaking tasks and gives students hands-on experience with creating functional clothing. 

OVERVIEW:

Dressmaking 1 is an introductory course that teaches the fundamental skills and knowledge needed to create basic garments. It covers essential topics such as fabric types, proper body measurements, pattern drafting, cutting techniques, hand and machine sewing, and garment construction. Students learn how to use sewing tools safely and accurately while developing precision, creativity, and problem-solving skills. The course emphasizes both technical ability and artistic design, providing a strong foundation for more advanced dressmaking and encouraging students to produce functional, well-finished clothing items. 

REFLECTION:

Taking Dressmaking 1 has been a valuable and enriching experience that taught me more than just how to sew—I learned patience, precision, and the importance of careful planning. From understanding fabric types to drafting patterns and assembling garments, I discovered how much effort and creativity go into making even the simplest piece of clothing. It was rewarding to see my ideas come to life through fabric and thread, and I gained a sense of accomplishment and confidence with every completed project. This course not only developed my technical skills but also gave me a deeper appreciation for the craft of dressmaking.
