11 May 2019 Estonian Embassy Open House Day

On a pleasant second Saturday in May, 5-11-2019, the Estonian Embassy once again opened its doors to guests to take part in the uniquely-Washington Shortcut to Europe Embassy Open House Day. Over six thousand guests seized the opportunity to come inside, where they were greeted by local Estonians in rahvariided and saw demonstrations of Estonian handicrafts. Outside, more arts and culture was on display, as folk singer Mari Kalkun serenaded the audience with her kannel music and mellow singing. Following her performances, Pillerkaar, Estonian Folk Dancers of the Washington, DC Metro Area, took the stage and performed several sets over the course of the afternoon comprising a wide swath of their repertoire. Most of those sets were followed by opportunities for brave onlookers to step up and learn a few dance moves themselves, and so many of them were eager to do so! It was a wonderful day of Estonian and European culture, and it's a highlight of the calendar every spring!
